Ochre, mustard, goldenrod, golden brown, yellow…whatever you call it, the color is having a moment this fall. Black Crane is doing a wonderful golden brown color in lots of styles, as is Simon Miller – who is being quite literal with it, clearly nodding to the 70’s shapes and styles in which colors like mustard, burgundy & cream harken back to.
I actually saw this Simon Miller sweater in person and it’s beautiful – and what got me started thinking about mustard again…along with seeing all the new Black Crane pieces at Garmentory (use my referral link for a $20 account credit). And Eileen Fisher has a nice ‘version’ of mustard (they call it Arnica), which is a bit darker, and slightly more brown.
BUT mustard is a color I have convinced myself I absolutely cannot wear. And I do love the color, interestingly enough, but every time in the past I tried it, I’ve been shocked by how it looks on me; mustard just doesn’t play nice with my skintone. No big deal, really, because I don’t need to wear it, or probably wouldn’t if I’m being realistic, but I do think it’s a color that goes beautifully with black.
Janice, who is the BEST at this, recently put together some outfits with mustard as the accent color. And if you’re into mustard, but just want a hint, I also love this Ace & Jig top.

What do you think about mustard? Do you wear it? How?
I like this color for fall, but we have similar coloring and it definitely doesn’t work for me. Sometimes, if there’s a color or pattern I can’t wear but I really like, I’ll find a way to work it into my house, like with a throw pillow or scarf. I’ll drape a scarf over a chair to add a bit of color to my living room, and I can see it all the time. I’m weird and don’t actually like to wear scarves around my neck, but I love using them in other ways. 🙂
what a good idea!! i should try that with throw pillows in my office…
I meant to add that you can even wrap a pillow in a scarf to make a new cover. 🙂
Just had a conversation about this color at a fashion show this weekend. Definite a color I like but cannot wear – too much yellow in my own skin. I like the idea of using it as an accent color in home decor or even in a scarf.
I’m colorphobic, but this is one of my very few favorites and I always love to see it come back. It was around in a quieter way last year – I bought the Everlane luxe wool U-neck sweater in mustard and a loose-knit mohair-blend top by Eileen Fisher in a color called goldleaf. Black with it is my default of course, but I think it plays even nicer with charcoal, even a medium gray.
My hair is quite dark but has a lot of red in it. Maybe that helps me pull this color off?
oh, it sounds like mustard would be lovely with your hair color!!
i’d like to try it again…just to see…
This was one of my favorite colors in my early twenties. However, I was darker skinned then as I was always at the beach. I also lightened my hair more. I’d say it wouldn’t suit me today. However I think it would be a lovely color for a handbag, belt or a shoe regardless of skin tone.
I like really pale ochre. The shade is beautiful but the bold saturation can be a bit too bumble bee like for me. I recently bought a scallop shirt from Trade-Mark that I’ve posted on that is technically ochre but a very pale subtle shade of it.
Yes!! I echo all of these ladies’ thoughts – my skin tone in general does not support wearing yellow tones. That said, one of my absolute favorite cardigans of all time is the J Crew Infinity Cardigan from 2010 or so in ‘bronzed twig’. It’s got just enough green in it that it works for me, and looks great with charcoal and navy. So, I think the trick is to find just the right tone of ochre that works for you, which requires some luck for sure!
I have always loved this color since ‘mustard’ was a thing in my early high school years but was always sure it wouldn’t work on me even though it comes in so many different intensities and with more brown or gold or whatever. Your post inspired me to check out my local thrift store and I found a great, thick-knit Barneys house brand cashmere-silk turtleneck, the old stuff they made in Italy back in the day. It was a steal and looks great with grey pants. Thanks!
