**not all the shoes I’ve featured are inherently sustainable (in terms of materials, business ethics, production process), but as I’ve said before, anything you buy can be made sustainable if you WEAR it, enjoy it and appreciate it for as long as you can.
As I mentioned yesterday, I’ve wanted a pair of black oxfords for quite some time, but 1. haven’t found THE RIGHT pair yet, and 2. am trying very hard to resist buying a pair in favor of wearing the shoes I already own.
If I did buy a pair of oxfords, I’d ideally like a slip-on style, like the Zero Maria Cornejo pair above (LOVE THESE SO MUCH, and I’ve been waiting on them to go on sale, but no luck so far!), or the Freda Salvador woven pair, which I think I might love even more, but are obviously completely impractical for winter.Β I know myself, though, and If I’m going to try and wear oxfords rather than sneakers, they need to be easy to get on and off, and no fuss.
I also have no ankles to speak of + thick calves, so I prefer shoes that don’t come up so high on my foot – that show a bit of skin around the top of my foot and “ankle” area. Those are harder to find. I think the Nisolo oxfords look like they are lower on the foot, and any d’orsay style would work in theory. But obviously d’orsay styles are impractical for winter, in Texas also, and I don’t like to cover my feet when it’s hot, so how practical are they, really??
Anyway, I’m not buying now (still) but that never stops me from shopping! So just for fun here are some of my favorite styles right now, many on sale and some sustainable.Β If you didn’t chime in onΒ yesterday’s post, what’s your favorite oxford? Do you wear them?
Some Vegan options:
Sydney Brown
Aponi
Novacas
Ahimsa *sustainably-ethicaly-made

picked up a pair of green/grey dieppa restrepos at the outnet for a reasonable price and I LOVE LOVE LOVE them. just need to get a partial rubber sole put on.
They have so many good DR shoes at the outnet right now!! None in my size though π
If you can find them, the Seychelles By Your Side Oxford is wonderful! I have the taupe colorway, which is nice and shiny, and they can be worn without laces as a slip on shoe. They are super chic and affordable, a nice way to dip your toe into the trend.
My apologies for my lack of patience, but it didn’t look like any of the images were Restrepo and I am asking a great favor of you in lieu of my clicking them all – do you think of Restrepo as notably non-sustainable? I just love their design.
oops! I got my act together and clicked through to see that Restrepo is included!
I think anything can be sustainable if you wear it/use it/appreciate it. I wouldn’t consider them inherently sustainable though I terms of materials, production, etc.
I love their designs as well. And mine are definitely sustainable; I’m still wearing them years later with no plans to stop!!
i’ve tried to like seychelles, but i think i tried an oxford style a million years ago, or some other style, and i could never get the sizing right? same with that other style that was so popular for a while…i do like their aesthetic though!
The Nisolo oxfords look almost identical to the Dieppa Restrepo ones…and the Nisolo ankle boots are as well:

I think the DR shoes are just so well made with great materials that you rarely find these days that I think they are a great sustainable investment, even if not technically “sustainable.”
Agreed. My problem is now that I look more I think I want a black sole…
I ordered the Freda Salvador Dame (black patent) oxford just before Christmas with their 10% off new customer discount. They are perfection! I love oxfords with boyfriend jeans and cuffed skinnies. The Dame has silver nailhead details that make them a little more feminine than some. I also have a pair of DR Cali in burgundy patent that I don’t wear as often but whenever I do, I get comments from everyone. They are so pretty and unique! I need to wear them more π
that’s what draws me into all the freda salvador styles; that they have subtle “femme” details that keep them from looking overly masculine. ugh. i really want those woven ones, and i’d be able to wear them most of the year here…
I’ve had my eye on the TOMS black mocha brogues for awhile now…I like how unfussy and classic they are, and that they are meant to be worn with or without the laces. Looks like they’re currently on sale, too! Hmmm…
I have the Cole Haan Zero Grands (picked them at the Nordstrom sale in July) and I’ve been wearing them nonstop at CES this week. Definitely worth the money, and I like that the suede is perforated so your feet never get overly hot.
i need to try those on…i’ve tried to like cole haan, but never really found a pair that spoke to me, or fit me very well. these do though π
For a very long time I lusted after oxfords – I always loved the look of them on the models I saw in pictures, and wanted to emulate that look. But after years of wearing them and never feeling like they quite worked on me, I realized that I had had that feeling because, well, they *don’t!* I’m not sure what it is – they just make my feet look like duck feet or something. That problem, however, is solved when I do oxfords with just a bit of a heel – and by a bit, I mean one and a half to two inches. As long as that heel is there, it makes all the difference and makes them somehow work for me. Something about flat shoes – unless they are boots — just doesn’t flatter me at all. Anyway, it’s good to realize the gap between the images one is presented with and lusting after, and the reality of one’s own body and style. The same is true for me with regard to loose, flowy tops – I just look like I am wearing a bag if I am not careful. I think the issue is that I have a petite, curvy figure, and fitted clothing just flatters that body type more. Not that I can’t have some drape, just not the kind of “boyfriend” and hanging off the body look that flatters others. All this said, I love all these oxfords and hope they work better on your than they do on me!!!
PS, another thought – I think what doesn’t work for some body types, certainly mine, is shoes that actually LOOK too much like they actually ARE men’s shoes. Oh how I ADORE all clothing for women that is “borrowed from menswear,” as they say, but it is rare that any of it looks good on me. As long as the shoe, regardless of how “menswear style” it is, looks like it was adapted for women, I can most of the time pull it off.
On another note – had anybody tried the new Everlane waffle stitch wool sweaters? They look pretty good. Would love some more Everlane reviews on here as they seem to have a bunch of new pieces that are out. I’ve been less excited by their stuff lately, but there are a few items that I’d like to see reviewed. I recently bought the crew sweatshirt in marled grey thinking I’d probably be disappointed and was pleasantly pleased with it and decided to keep. My 2 cents on my latest Everlane purchase.
Thanks!
Have you seen these Vince loafers? They’re kind of a monk strap oxford. The pointy toe feminizes them so I think they’d look good on everyone. http://m.vince.com/products/vnd8123l1
yes, i love those, but i’m looking for something with less of a platform lately…i am always drawn to platforms, and i love them, but i’m in the mood for a more “traditional” sole on a pair of oxfords. but LOVE the pointy toe, it’s so incredibly flattering!!!
i’m ordering the charcoal waffle knit tunic – i’m just going back and forth between small and medium…can’t decide!!
which other items would you like to see reviewed?
i’m afraid that will be my problem too – it’ll be just another thing i love more on other women, but doesn’t work on me. but i should try them first, i think!
Thanks for asking! Right now I think the waffle knit sweaters are the main thing, and I wouldn’t mind a detailed assessment of the scuba sweatshirt, which appeals to me because it’s a comfy-looking sweatshirt but with unusual styling in the cut for a sweatshirt, so maybe something that can crossover well between super casual and more put-together-looking. I wish they would come out with more interesting outerwear, like some parkas or something. I have the anorak and LOVE it, it’s probably my favorite Everlane piece to date! Thanks and look forward to the review(s)!
definitely try for sure!!
Lots of great ones here! Unfortunately all the ones I was interested in were sold out or very nearly – nothing in my size. I do still want a pair of silver ones someday π
I’m also hunting for a pair of oxfords and the Nisolo Olivers look perfect. Thank you for this post and all the options – so helpful! I tried following your affiliate link and using your code, but the Nisolo checkout won’t apply the discount, saying
“This code did not match any active gift card or discount. Was it entered correctly?”
Am I missing something? Should I contact Nisolo directly?
Thanks again π
