(yesterday via Instagram – wearing Lipstick Queen “Hello Sailor”)
Did you see the HUGE ask me anything posts Elizabeth Suzann just did? They were interesting, inspiring, and I loved reading all her thoughtful answers (and the really good questions!), so I thought it would be fun to do my own. I wonder if there’s anything left you guys DON’T already know about me though! I guess we’ll see…
So, have at it, ask me anything!!
(I’ll respond formally in a post next week, and maybe a little in the comments)
Do you listen to music or podcasts or anything when you walk Dagny? (weird question, I know, but you mentioned a few weeks ago that you were trying to give her her “nose” after reading that article/book on dogs not being able to smell when their humans pull them off a scent during walks, so I was curious how you handle the meandering that must ensue?) I lack patience (and also a dog) but when I have something to listen to, I can deal with it better……
What type(s) of job(s) did you do before blogging full time? Was throwing yourself into this a logical extension of the kind of work you’d been doing previously, or was it a complete lark?
Hi, Gretchen
I would like you to address/advice how older women (e.g. 65+) who are youthful but – let’s face it – much older than you are – might take your style philosophy and make it work. Maybe what I am asking for is for you to boil things down to “ten rules for dressing like Gretchen” appropriately for my age. I work in a young, advertising agency and am one of a kind – there are no colleagues within 15 years of my age. I think I look younger than I am, have a lot of energy and a youthful spirit (I also have two adopted children who are sixteen years of age which is highly unusual for a senior citizen and they keep me young.) Love the way James Perse featured Maye Musk but she is a model, tall, lanky, beautiful. Any advice?
I know you have moved a lot, I’m assuming because of Leo’s job, but as one who has also moved a lot (due to Bill’s job!) how do get yourself integrated into a community? Make friends? Even though I’m an extrovert, it’s not easy. In some ways, it gets harder every time.
What’s the most you’ve ever spent for an item of clothing, shoes, or handbags? And how did you decide that the purchase was worth it?
What is your all-time favorite piece of clothing? (I think I might know…) shoes? handbag?
Good question, Christine M.!!!
Also I’m intrigued by the fact that you don’t have children as you have mentioned. I’m in the same boat and might want to keep it that way. I wonder how do you feel about not having children or any thoughts you have about that? (sorry if this topic is painful in anyway… obviously no need to answer this question if you aren’t comfortable). Thanks.
And for your younger readers, how to begin on this path. Especially if you work in a more conservative field (I work in healthcare). Also, any advice for your taller readers.
How/when did you become interested in fashion, but especially more minimal styles?
I was going to ask the exact same thing!
I would like to know some of your favorite style bloggers who are 40+ or have a minimal style. There have been a few times you have referenced a blogger’s post that you read and that gave you a post idea and I’ve almost always ended up liking that blogger also (Seasons + Salt comes to mind recently, I’ve since subscribed to her blog too).
I’m also curious what your occupation was pre-fulltime blogger/slowre. Speaking of Slowre, I love my Philip Lim bag so much! It’s perfect. Thank you for the quick ship, I would buy from you again.
I like this question, too. There’s just no one else out there like you! (Or seemingly so, anyway…)
I’m interested in your answers to all of the questions here. For myself, I’m interested in a James Perse dress. I love how you style them and would like to incorporate some of that, however, I don’t know what to wear underneath? I know you’ve talked about this a little (maybe a lot?) previously, but can we get the nitty gritty? I worry that my ‘bits’ might be a little too ‘mobile’ in some of the bodycon styles but I also really like them…
I’d love to know more about how you plan your posts. Do you always start the week with at least a couple of ideas that you know you want to write about, or do you plunge right in and see what happens? Regardless, it must take discipline to keep going and also stay fresh, relevant, and conversational. I’m impressed!
Others have already asked similar questions, but here’s my version if you’d like to consider it. 🙂 :
One of the things I admire most about your style is its cohesiveness. It seems to have really come together when you started wearing James Perse. Or at least it seems like this brand’s aesthetic became a foundation for your style at some point. (Am I correct in assuming that?) So I guess my question is, how did you discover James Perse designs, and how did you know that the JP “look” was for you? Did you intentionally decide to focus on this brand, or did you just happen to keep finding pieces that you liked from the line?
I think you’ve touched on it before, but what’s your daily routine and how did you develop it? What keeps you tied to it? Basically, how do you stick to things/schedules when it’s all self determined and no one is waiting on you to meet a deadline. (I’m self employed as well, and an “obliger” in Gretchen Rubin’s terminology, so it’s tough for me)
Seconding this one. Specifically, am curious about what friendships look like with other women as we get get older. Am in my mid-30s, married with no kids, and would like to be more intentional about my friendships especially as most women my age are now mothers. Would love to hear your thoughts if you’re up for it!
