Funny how trends get under your skin, no matter how hard you try and resist. Not that I’m trying very hard, mind you, even though I don’t wear color, I AM pretty adventurous with my sartorial choices, I think, always trying new silhouettes to see if they’ll work on me. I may draw the line at culottes though. We’ll see.
But I did mention that I’d been wanting a pair of white sneakers in my “dreaming of spring” post recently, and even though I’m trying to get by with my Play CdG x Converse sneakers (that are off-white, and that I don’t really love the way they look on my foot…), I’m still obsessed with WHITE white sneakers. The Eileen Fisher pair, specifically. They look like EXACTLY what I want. But they’re beyond what I’m willing to pay.
I do also like the Superga pair at Steven Alan, with the velcro closures, and they’re more in my budget, but they’re sold out and may or may not be restocked in my size. Maybe a pair of white espadrilles is more my style though?
And white Birkenstocks. Hmmm..I can’t quite get behind those, but they’re EVERYWHERE. I love my Birkenstocks, but I, personally, cannot imagine wearing white ones. They’re so sterile looking. Or something. But, I do love the look of them, especially in that outfit I featured with the gray coat by AYR. Maybe they just “work” as part of an all white outfit? Would they look funny with mostly black?
I don’t think I’ll be wearing all white this spring, or ever. But I will admit that every once in a while I consider a long white boho-y dress for the hot summer months. I do appreciate the “clean” minimal look of a crisp white dress, but in general I think white is much harder to wear. For obvious reasons of cleanliness, but also how it looks on the body. I’ve never been a fan of white on my lower half, for example…
One thing I do know I’m getting this spring is the Everlane market tote, in Gesso. When this first came out I believe I mentioned that I was tempted by the light grey. But I told myself I would be “happier” with the black one, and decided to wait for it to come back in stock. I’m not waiting anymore, and anyway, the Gesso just “gets” me, right in the gut. And I think it will go beautifully with all the black & gray in my wardrobe for spring and summer. So…ordered.
What do you think about all white for spring? or white shoes? Will you do it?

I Love white, but don’t wear it too often because coffee drips seem to be quite attracted to white. I also love white/white tennis shoes and they are hard to find. I mostly find ugly white/white walking shoes ..ugh, no thanks.
Monica.
I went searching for a white jacket last year, and ultimately decided it just wasn’t for me–I didn’t feel like it flattered me and no matter the style, I felt a little like I was wearing a lab coat. I finally found white jeans I like last year, but I still pair them with navy or black, and not all white. I like the idea of white accessories with black or grey, but would still be more likely to get a pair of grey sneakers versus white for lower contrast. I’d love to find some kind of loose white dress that I could wear to work or casually, but like the white jacket, I’m not sure if I can find one that really works for me.
Some people look great in all-white outfits–Angie from You Look Fab wears it a lot–but probably just in smaller doses for me.
Nope, not me. The only white I wear is a t-shirt and occasional button down. Even my sweaters are off-white (well, maybe I have one pure white cardigan). Shoes & pants get too dirty and coats – as mentioned above – look to lab-y (and I work at a medical center/university). I have a pair of white ankle jeans and white full length boot cut and I think I wore each once last year? Denim is too hot in the summer for me, I don’t love the look on me, and I’m one of those weird people who has hangups about wearing pure white pants in a non-summer season. I could stretch to May and September, but not beyond that.
Also, white shoes remind me of easter as a kid, so no, not going to work for me….
Know yourself, right? π This is something I will admire on others but just isn’t me…
Am totally on board with white. I bought a pair of those white thong Birks, love them. I’m looking for white jeans too, and wouldn’t even mind a white moto jacket!
I like white when deployed very, very strategically — a girlfriend used to wear a charcoal v-neck sweater and a white denim mini on cool evenings and looked v. chic — but if you don’t do it right, you end up looking like a nurse or a salon esthetician.
(It’s the same problem with the white-shirt-black-bottoms combo: If you don’t nail the proportions and cut perfectly, you look like a waiter at a hotel buffet.)
I’m going to go with a pair of old-school white Bass Sharon sunjuns, and wear them with baggy rolled-bottom shorts and a button-down shirt on weekends. But since I live in a city and rely on public transit, I have a preschooler and I have an office job (with its accompanying dependence on coffee), my white begins and ends at the ankles.
I love all things white! I am a bit of a clean freak, so I do need to avoid white pants and such. I currently have a pair of Vince sneakers that I can’t decide if I am going to keep. The front is white mesh and I am worried that one scooter ride through the Atlanta spring air will turn them yellow with pollen. Are Vans comfortable? I do like those “pebble snake” ones that you link to above. They are a lot more reasonable than Vince.
I’m SO drawn to white too. I wish it was more flattering on me, and I also wish I wasn’t such a klutz. Black hides coffee spills… White? Not so much.
It looks pretty, but all white is not for me. My white clothes rarely last more than one season due to getting dingy (or they instantly get spilled on), and white shoes get dirty. I’m too particular to deal with that. It would make me crazy.
oh! i like those vince sneakers you have!! been looking at those…
i have one pair of vans and they’re an old-school lace-up pair, very very basic, and not really comfortable. the slip-ons seem to have more cushioning though? just from looking at them. i haven’t tried on a pair. they’re worth a try for the price i think…
oh! will we see an outfit with the birks?? i’d love to see you in a white moto jacket – so chic…
white clothes are hard. i had a white denim jacket by theory a million years ago that i never wore. i don’t think i’d wear one now even…it just isn’t my style. neither is all white, although i really like it on some others…
i think the key for a white dress would be finding a combination of one that is loose but has some “crisp,” tailored elements as well. like something a-line? could be very interesting…but then, i’d always worry about sitting on something and getting the butt dirty. even just a little dust or whatever would make a smudge. not cute.
true, lisa! i love the idea of a charcoal sweater and white slouchy jeans though. but yeah, white is tricky to do “right” –
ha! true…i do end up with stains on things i don’t even notice until i’m putting them in the wash. you’d notice IMMEDIATELY on white!!
remember how when we were kids, we wanted our shoes to look immediately scuffed up and worn in? or i did anyway…now it’s the opposite. i did have a pair of white k-swiss tennis shoes back in the day and i always HATED that they were so WHITE!!! now, i’d be more concerned about keeping them nice looking LOL
Brilliant decision on the tote! It’s beautiful and I think you’ll use it a lot (Be really careful using it with blue jeans, tho!). I would do the white leather sneaks, but not the Birkies. I remember once wearing an outfit that was close to all-white…I guess because it “read” white to the eye…and I got a lot of “Headed over to the hospital to work a shift?” comments. It was quite snarky of them, I thought. That’s what I get for living in rural areas and being fashion-forward. Haha!
The sneakers are something I’m dying to break out, but not until mud season has passed! (4′ of snow melting will do that to you!)
