I love the idea that you can admire something from afar, and appreciate it on others, but not need to add it to your closet. Unfortunately, that’s not usually how it goes for me LOL; I admire something, and immediately try and figure out a way to add it to my own wardrobe. This is one of my biggest shopping challenges, but I strive to overcome it. Perhaps by talking about them here, and posting the things I “covet,” they’ll lose their hold on me? I just need to get them out of my head somehow, and onto a page, like writing a diary, and then I can let them go? It has actually worked for some things in the past.
So, let’s try again. Here goes: I have really been wanting to add another red piece to my wardrobe for a while. Since I bought the Eileen Fisher dress this summer actually. And I don’t know if it’s a trendy color now, or if it’s because of Christmas, but all sorts of red has been popping up on my radar lately, and I love it.
But I don’t wear color. I don’t like red with black, so that limits what I’d wear red with substantially. Not practical. But still…
Here are some pieces I’m loving lately:
Rachel Comey Pitch popover Top
Samantha Pleet infinity sweater
Very tempted by this…and it wouldn’t be nearly as cropped on me
Elizabeth Suzann silk florence pants in Rust
These aren’t really red red, which I like.
If anything, these are what I would get – I would wear this color with black 🙂
APL Techloom phantom sneakers
I need to replace my nikes soon, maybe a red sneaker is a good way to do red?? But speaking of shoes, I’ve long loved these Rachel Comey Dahl mules and these embroidered mules (which look like slippers my grandmother used to wear, and makes me love them even more…) with just a little red in them…
And just because we’re already talking about shopping…there are some good things on sale at Shopbop and an additional 25% off for the last day today:
I have added and removed this Rachel Comey jacket from my cart a million times already…and I highly recommend this James Perse high gauge tee, which is $38 after the discount. I have it in burgundy and it’s one of my favorite tees. I’ve also been stalking this James Perse jumpsuit FOREVER. If it was in stock in a size 1 or 2 I’d probably get it. Ugh.
Also, Mill Mercantile has Barbour classic jackets on sale – and if you order from Garmentory, and have a $20 credit in your account (which you get by signing up via my referral link), they’re an even better price. I don’t mean to beat my referral link with a dead horse, but I truly love Garmentory and want to make sure everyone gets their $20 credit. $20 is not nothing…
Happy Thursday! Do you wear red? Have you noticed a lot of red around lately?
I purged all the red from my closet when I realized I hate wearing red. Especially red and black. It feels far more loud than I feel and I was never comfortable in it. HOWEVER I have since added back in some very specific shades. I think more than any other color, the particular shade of red you wear makes a big difference. I don’t do cardinal red or Christmas red. Not even in lipstick. But a darker garnet or burgundy are actually kind of great, in moderation. So maybe that rust ES would work for you!
Red can be tricky to balance, but there are definitely more neutral reds, if that’s a thing, and I think the rust silk from ES is so pretty. The great thing about ES is that they will mail you a swatch and you can see whether you really would like it with the black in your closet…
Yes I have also noticed that red is THE accent color to have right now, and I’ve been lusting after a few pieces even though I’m strictly a neautrals gal. I did buy a rust colored bandana although I’m struggling to style it right now. But– my husband bought me misha and puff mittens in persimmon for Christmas… it is a very loud red but in small doses like mittens it turns out I’m 100% into it! Good way to jump on the color bandwagon without a major commitment.
Too funny…Was out with my husband last night and we both admired a woman’s red dress, now I gotta get one! But it is hard to find the right color red!
I love red and have lots of garments in many shades. For me, red pants are the hardest to wear (but I’m inextricably drawn to them, which is a problem….) I like a blue red or a dark burgundy best. Orangey reds & rusts aren’t the best for me. Got a “red” merino cardigan from Eileen Fisher that is more a dark pink. It’s dark enough I’ve kept it, but ironically I would have preferred the EF cinnamon or cinnabar that she makes (I have a silk tank in that color). I wear so much black that I like breaks of REAL color every so often. And scarves. I wear scarves almost every day and lots have red in them – my winter colors tend to be black, red & dark green (so happy that’s “in style” again this year so I find stuff in that color if I want!) In the summer I tend more toward turquoise & cobalt….
I love the idea of red clothing but I haven’t found the shade that works with my complexion. Currently the only red items I have in my closet are red heeled sandals and burgundy/wine-colored oxfords. I also have a red nail polish and lipstick (okay, it’s cranberry). I think I’m better off with the small accents of red in my mostly black/gray/blue/purple wardrobe.
i have the swatch of the rust and it
is lovely! much richer than shown.
okay, how does this Garmentory referral link work?!? Whenever I try to follow such links, it just takes me to the homepage and I never get the referral credit.
you have to click on the referal link – this one: https://www.garmentory.com/?ref=k54bH8atq9HFE_jKJ5iwpA&spop=3&utm_campaign=referral – all of my product links, etc., will go straight to the product, only the ones that say referral link go to the referral. also you have to not already have an account, to get the credit. if you have an account already, i think it will redirect you to the home page?
Red is one of my favorite accent colors. I love blue-reds and orange-reds. I don’t wear red with black very often (too harsh), but love combining it with olive, white, cream, gray, turquoise, dark blue, and burgundy. I even ordered a pair of hiking boots in bright red recently (I have a strong aversion to brown and beige). Rachel Comey’s Popover top looks like a nice way to dip your feet in (the one you link lower down on the page is nice too, but reminds me too much of a karate gi).
I don’t normally care for red clothing or accessories on me but love it on others. I do wear red lip color almost exclusively as the rest of my makeup is so minimal. However, I have recently been craving poppy red accessories, that bright orange red (I’m convinced poppy is the original meaning behind “pop of color”).
I already have two bags – the Issey Miyake Bao Bao tote and a mini round crossbody by Carven (round bag), it’s time to stop before I go overboard although I think a poofy skirt or a ballet flat would be lovely. Like you said I need to appreciate without the acquisition. But I guess what they say is true – “there is a red for everyone”.
I do like rust with black or even grey. I think the ES pant you’ve shown here would be great with a faded black T or cozy sweater. I agree about the lipstick red with black, not a fan except as a small accent in a black and white print. Otherwise it makes me think of the 80s and Robert Palmer’s addicted to love girls.
OMG. Robert Palmer! so funny. and I agree! cannot see Ted & black and not think of the 80s.
umm, red & black. my phone screen is cracked and I can’t see! ?
Hmmm…I really LOVE (Cue heart emoji) your red Eileen Fisher summer dress on you. So, I think it’s a good color for you, although a bit much for your usual color palette. But those ES pants are gorgeous and would look so good with a black top/cropped sweater and sandals (Your Beek ones).
.
Lol!!! Now I’ve got the Robert Palmer chicks plus “Love Actually” and Billy Mack’s ”Christmas is all around us” girls in my head! 🙂
