Just for the hell of it…
What if you had to choose ONE brand (money no object) to buy clothes from, what would it be? What brand/designer do you think personifies you the best?
IF I had to choose one brand/designer to live in/buy clothes from for an indefinite period of time, it would, of course, be James Perse. Right now, I know the clothes fit me perfectly, they suit my lifestyle, and generally, I would feel comfortable dressing only in James Perse. I wouldn’t necessarily WANT to dress only in JP, but I could. For accessories (I know I didn’t ask that), I would choose bags by The Row, and shoes, Robert Clergerie, always and forever.
What’s one thing you’ve purged from your wardrobe you wish you had now?
Actually now, nothing. But in years past, I’ve wished I had certain bags back. Now that I think about it, I do wish I had two Chloe bags from about 10 years ago back; they were stunning.
What’s something you’re hanging on to, but sort of wish you had the courage to let go of?
A lot – I would like to have far fewer items of clothing than I do now, but I seem to have reverted back to holding onto things I know I should get rid of. My Hope News trousers that don’t fit for one. Bags I don’t use, and am frustrated with. Some Robert Clergerie sandals I don’t wear. I’m scared to though, because what if I “need” them in the future?
If you had to choose 5-10 things from your wardrobe (including shoes & bags) to keep and you had to get rid of everything else, what would you keep?
I can’t answer that!!! Ugh. I would probably keep my 3/4 sleeve black JP midi dress, an Everlane cashmere cardigan, JP casual tee, my 6397 shorty jeans, Elizabeth Suzann silk pants, Elizabeth Suzann marlena dress, Birkenstock Arizona Sandals, Vince sneakers, Admonish black tote bag & Denim jacket. I could get by with those things for a while…
What are you wearing RIGHT THIS SECOND?
Everlane muscle tank
Everlane cashmere cardigan
Rag & Bone jeans (gift from a friend!)
Birkenstock Shearling lined clogs 🙂
Your turn!! (the Everlane dipped tote giveaway is over!!! Thanks for all your participation 🙂 )

What if you had to choose ONE brand (money no object) to buy clothes from, what would it be?
Alexander McQueen, without a doubt.
What brand/designer do you think personifies you the best?
McQueen. But if we’re living in reality, probably Eileen Fisher.
What’s one thing you’ve purged from your wardrobe you wish you had now?
Handbags. When I run out of storage, I sell them. I should just find a way to keep all of them.
What’s something you’re hanging on to, but sort of wish you had the courage to let go of?
Nice pieces of clothing that won’t fit until I lose weight.
If you had to choose 5-10 things from your wardrobe (including shoes & bags) to keep and you had to get rid of everything else, what would you keep?
1. LV Speedy 25, my first high end designer bag.
2. Prada black suede chunky heel booties
3. Vince Blair slip ons
4. Eileen Fisher organic cotton side zip pants
5. Any one of my Vince sweater coats
6. Alexander McQueen skull clutch
7. Cream silk blouse from Banana Republic
8. Hermes scarf
9. Black cotton Banana Republic collarless blazer
10. Manolo Blahnik kitten heels
What are you wearing RIGHT THIS SECOND?
I look like a slob — Friday is work from home day. Yoga pants, long sleeve cotton shirt.
First off, I love the fact that there are other people out there who think about their clothes and love them as much as I do, and that I have found this website to comfort myself!
Here goes-
1. James Perse, James Perse, James Perse. If I wasn’t married, I would hunt him down. It’s like I found my clothing soulmate. Everything is so cozy, comfy, simple, quiet, relaxed, yet stylish without looking like you’re trying too hard. I could easily live only in JP. Going into a JP Boutique makes me feel like a lost child who found its mother.
2. I can’t for the life of me think of anything I have ever let go of, permanently, that I regret. I feel “lighter” when I purge my closet, and do so twice a year. Now, I have let my sister borrow some things and have questioned myself later. This would be no big deal except for the fact that she lives in the US and I live in Canada, so it’s quite the process to get her to package up and mail something back to me. It usually takes about a month before she finally relents, so it requires great patience on my part, which is difficult because usually when I ask for something back it’s because I’ve now fixated on it and can’t wait to wear it again.
3. I have a pair of shoes that one of my best friends gave me years ago. At the time I shrieked with glee and couldn’t wait to wear them. She had them made for her, and for whatever reason, gave them to me. They’re quite odd-looking, brown leather, kind of Maryjane-like sling backs. They’re hideous, really, and I’ve never worn them, but dammit I can’t give them away!!!!!!
4. Ok, 5-10 things that “I would marry if I could” as I like to say.
-My JP white slub t-shirt that I’ve had for years. I treat it like a newborn.
-My JP black tank top. Perfect coverage and fit-not another like it.
-My Seven Josefina Girlfriend jeans-denim jammies.
-My JP Long Fleece Military Coat that I got on sale off one of his sample sales. Perfection…my sister was drooling when she saw it, and wore it the entire trip we took together. I was never so happy to part ways with her!! The fit is spectacular and the coat is simply gorgeous.
-My black Emerson Fry slides-they go with EVERYTHING and are so easy to wear.
-My Rag&Bone moccasins-they feel like I’m putting my feet in a big bowl of whipped cream.
Seriously the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn.
-My JP brown cotton pants I bought about 5 or 6 years ago at JP in Boston. From the second I put them on I knew they were mine. The material and the fit are exactly right for me. I’m not one to buy brown, but these are the perfect dark shade. I live in them in the summer.
-My cotton, ruched, fitted, v-neck, black JP dress. It fits beautifully and even manages to hold me in where needed, as its double lined in the skirt. It goes anywhere-can be dressed up or down and looks effortless and timeless.
There’s probably more, but I’m starting to scare myself. I adore the above-mentionned articles of clothing, and dare I say “Covet” them.
This one is easy. Today I’m wearing my Seven Josefina Girlfriends that I love, with an old, light gray v-neck JP t-shirt with flipflops. I just ordered my first pair of Birkenstocks today and am going to try to replace my flipflops with them.
Thanks for the questions Grechen! This was fun and I enjoy reading everyone’s responses.
1. What if you had to choose ONE brand (money no object) to buy clothes from, what would it be? What brand/designer do you think personifies you the best?
Cuyana! Responsible company, thoughtful design, quality construction, and they capture the effortless feminine silhouettes I love.
2. What’s one thing you’ve purged from your wardrobe you wish you had now?
Somehow this beautiful knee-length, longsleeve silk shirtdress in navy with a pussy-bow collar and pockets (thrifted and tagless) wound up with a grease stain on it. My unicorn came for a season and then left me.
3. What’s something you’re hanging on to, but sort of wish you had the courage to let go of?
Every uncomfortable heel in my closet.
4. If you had to choose 5-10 things from your wardrobe (including shoes & bags) to keep and you had to get rid of everything else, what would you keep?
Levi high-waisted skinny jeans, Cuyana white turtleneck tee, American Apparel black bodysuit tank, Everlane white relaxed poplin buttondown, Sam Edelman black slides, Aldo black smoking loafers, Cuyana black wool hat, Ray Ban round metal sunglasses, Cuyana black tote, Babaton black silk scarf/neckerchief.
5. What are you wearing RIGHT THIS SECOND?
Guilty! A sports bra, some spandex shorts, gray tee, and a bun that is seriously pushing the limits on the stretchiness of my hair-tie (yoga uniform!).
Fun!
1. Rick Owens, so beautifully constructed. Some of his clothes are a little too difficult to wear regularly, but most are very wearable and my perfect aesthetic.
2. From years ago two vintage items, a beautiful beaded top and a Stephen Sprouse dress. That dress was such a work of art.
3. An old pair of perfectly worn and ripped jeans that are way too big for me. I hate wearing belts so they just sit in my closet. Other than that I’m pretty ruthless with my purges.
4. Rick Owens cashmere shorts, Raquel Allegra alpaca cardigan, 6397 shorty jeans, R13 cotton/cashmere boy tee, Raquel Allegra distressed/painted sweatshirt, R13 black slouch skinny jeans, Rick Owens shearling lined leather sneakers, Marsell dirty white, half black over dye laceless shoes, Jas MB old school bag and my ancient, faded and frayed First Avenue tee – I can’t possibly wear it anywhere except at home but I spent so much time in that club the tee will literally have to disintegrate before I get rid of it.
This is so hard! I just realized I don’t even have a jacket/coat on the list, the RA cardigan is so thick it’s a good jacket substitute. If I could add a coat it would be my old black Burberry, it looks like a vintage men’s coat and has a button out liner so I can wear it year round.
5. Raquel Allegra sweatshirt, 6397 baggy jeans, Rick Owens canvas sneakers.
Mine is a linen/cotton mix. Long down to my ankles. Similar to this without the buttons:

Ooh – thanks! I like that quite a bit,
No worries – I couldn’t actually survive in just 5-10 pieces 😉 We have 4 seasons here too (though no “arctic blast” setting, thank goodness 😉
So much fun reading all the responses! I really had to keep in mind everything I need to wear to work for this one… So hard when you have to have two wardrobes.. “Work” and “Play”
1). Since I’m pear shaped, I HAVE to choose two: AllSaints for my tops/jackets and Theory for my pants 🙂 Theory pants are literally the only work pant that fits my booty and waist with no gap. The fit is so predictable on me, I can buy blind on EBay no problems.
2). I sold a fabulous white ceramic Michele watch on eBay that I’m itching to wear in these warmer months!
3). I should probably let go of some lingerie. I literally NEVER wear these pieces anymore and they are hanging in my closet reminding me of pre-mommy hood days 🙂
4). This is so hard!! JCrew Lookout Jeans, Theory Max C Black Slacks, Elizabeth and James Cohen Zip Back shirt, Prada black slacks (vintage), Frye Regina Pumps, Jerome Dreyfuss Billy Bag, AllSaints Leather Moto, Everlane black and white tees, Inhabit cashmere cardigan , my Dita Vida glasses so I can see!
5). Theory Max C Slacks, Everlane slim fit T in Olive, Zara scarf, AllSaints leather Moto, Red Frye pumps.
Good post Grechen! Very thought provoking!
1. Eileen Fisher, hands down!
2. The one thing I purged from my wardrobe {to the trash, actually} was a pair of stonewashed skinny jeans that fit so perfectly and amazingly took off 10 lbs. I wore them for years…. until I bent to take out the trash and ripped through the tush! Thankfully I was home! I should have taken them to the tailor for a possible repair. Writing that makes me nostalgic for them now; they were magical!
3. I need to let go of all my ill fitting underwear and spanx. I have a few tried and true styles that would be quite an investment to stock up on. But a valuable investment…
4. 1. My silver Birkenstocks!
2. My customized Levi 501’s.
3. My black asymmetrical Eileen Fisher tank
4. My James Perse t-shirt dress
5. My Eileen Fisher black jogger pants
6. My black wedgie sandals
7. My Eileen Fisher grey linen crop top
8. My Eileen Fisher off-white long silk tank
9. My Nine West tote that has butterflies on it….I get daily complements!
5. I am wearing a Loft sundress because I have been busy cleaning my house and driving kids around all day!
Right know I am on a big Eileen Fisher kick. I can’t afford her clothes full price, so I’m looking on Ebay, and consignment shops.
I have been a purse whore since I was 4 years old. I had a beautiful brown leather double handled carry all when I was in my late teens/early twenties that if I still had it I would be using it today.
I have a Missoni dress that while I love it, I think it looks terrible on me. I don’t have the heart to part with it yet.
I think the things I would hold on to would by my LV bags, my two Mulberry handbags as well as , my white leather ked sneakers that I can’t find anywhere. I have a Jones New York jumpsuit that I also love.
As I had a varicose vein treatment on my left leg, I am wearing an ace wrap around my entire leg as well as oversized linen drawstring pants and I white T=shirt.
I love this post! I was planning on posting tomorrow but couldn’t narrow down what I wanted to post about and now I know that I’m going to answer these questions! Thanks for the inspo 🙂 I’ll reply to this post when it’s up so CommentLuv can grab it!
1. All things Celine – including accessories.
2. Isabel Marant Camel Suede Jenny boots 🙁
3. Fifth avenue shoe repair light brown wool trousers from 2008. I still adore them, so well made and unique but I never wear them and refuse to sell or give them away.
4. Black oversized sweater, Light grey oversized sweater, Light gray maxi dress, black acid wash jeggings, black wool low crotch pants, low-top zip sneakers, 4 music t-shirts.
5. blue stripe denim dunagress, black music t-shirt
Ok, this looked way too hard, but you got me w the tote giveaway bc I really need one and had been eyeing that one. I will say that after reading a lot of the comments, I feel insecure about the fact that I haven’t had the budget to try a lot of the brands that I’ve wanted to and that everyone else has!
What if you had to choose ONE brand (money no object) to buy clothes from, what would it be? What brand/designer do you think personifies you the best?
It sounds odd, because I feel like I’m younger than the target demographic, but I think Eileen Fisher. I only have one piece, but the shopping I’ve done w clients of her things has been jealousy inducing.
What’s one thing you’ve purged from your wardrobe you wish you had now?
Off the top of my head, I really can’t think of anything, which is great!
What’s something you’re hanging on to, but sort of wish you had the courage to let go of?
I have a random black dress from Zara that I keep in case I have a dressy event but when I think hard about it, there’s always something else id rather wear. Ok, gone.
If you had to choose 5-10 things from your wardrobe (including shoes & bags) to keep and you had to get rid of everything else, what would you keep?
My Madewell small transport tote. Birkenstock Gizeh. Emerson Fry Yoshi sweater although I don’t love it as much as I had hoped I would 🙁 Ok, this is way harder than I thought it would be-do I not really love my clothes that much? I just got a Zero+Maria Cornejo dress on consignment and I hope it’s going to be my go-to event dress for years. Ok, that’s four. My Vince black v neck blouse. A chunky wood and brass necklace I found at a flea market. A brass necklace from Old Navy that I’ve had for years and is my fave. Eileen fisher cream colored tunic top. Black suede wedge booties.
What are you wearing RIGHT THIS SECOND?
A t shirt and leggings bc I’m in bed 😉
This thread is awesome, by the way! I absolutely love reading style blogs (especially yours, Grechen!) but it’s fantastic to be able to get a view of what non-bloggers who have a similar style to my own are wearing. I don’t know too many (or any, really) people who dress like me, so this is refreshing!!!
I am totally doing this as a blog post – I’ll tag you in it!!
1. J Crew. I could get anything from pjs to a wedding dress plus slippers and pumps to match. I know it’s fallen out of favor but I still love J Crew.
2. An orange jean jacket from Anthro. I hadn’t worn it ever when I purged it a couple years ago but now I would. A lot.
3. A beautiful Marni blouse that I’ve never worn bc it isn’t really my style. I guess it’s the one aspirational piece in my closet.
4. Boden Milan court pumps in woven navy/black, ankle length Paige jeans in a dark wash, ankle length Paige jeans in white, heather gray Uniqlo cashmere sweater, navy tweed Ann Taylor shift dress, navy Vince cashmere sweater, orange Frye Regina flats, navy J Crew coat, cream/multi J Crew tweed jacket, and a heather gray tee.
5. Ankle length Paige jeans in a dark wash, burgundy Target tank, J Crew striped cotton sweater, navy Ugg Scuffettes, and hot rollers!
That was fun! Loved reading everyone’s answers!
1. What if you had to choose ONE brand (money no object) to buy clothes from, what would it be?
-If Vince were ethical, which they are not, I would have to choose them. I am frustrated that they are the easy choice for me as far as style and fit. I can order online and know what I am getting into. I hope in a year or so I can answer Acne Studios. I have been loving their t-shirts and dresses this year! (James Perse is a close second).
2. What’s one thing you’ve purged from your wardrobe you wish you had now?
-I had a pair of Ecco sneakers (from when I worked in a boutique) that everyone hated because they were so ugly. Way uglier than Birkenstocks. I still think about those little guys.
3. What’s something you’re hanging on to, but sort of wish you had the courage to let go of?
-OMG, probably a third of my cashmere sweaters. I spent so much money on them so how can I let them go? Some are too slim and cling to my love handles like there is no tomorrow. Then, there is the blue version of my favorite James Perse Sweatshirt. It is the fit, shade and style I like, but the blue is a similar color to jeans and so it makes for a very uninteresting, blah outfit. And as is my bizarre custom, because it is my ‘least’ favorite sweatshirt, I wear it all the time and ‘save’ my favorite black and grey versions for some unknown special moment.
4. If you had to choose 5-10 things from your wardrobe (including shoes & bags) to keep and you had to get rid of everything else, what would you keep?
-Black Acne Studios linen t-shirt
Vince tank top
James Perse black sweatshirt
James Perse cashmere poncho (oh yes I did) (never worn – “saving it”)
Vince black cashmere boatneck sweater
Vince black roll neck sweater
Black Inhabit cashmere cardigan
Vince black boyfriend chinos
Frame Le High Straight jeans
Vince leggings
5. What are you wearing RIGHT THIS SECOND?
No 6 Frida clogs. 7 for all Mankind jeans. Blue James Perse Sweatshirt–DAMMIT.
What if you had to choose ONE brand (money no object) to buy clothes from, what would it be?
**This is a hard one. Dolce & Gabbana. I love their designs and believe they make a woman’s curves look amazing.
What brand/designer do you think personifies you the best?
**DVF. It’s classic, timeless, chic, and sexy.
What’s one thing you’ve purged from your wardrobe you wish you had now?
** I had a great pair of high-waisted khaki shorts. I purged them during our last move and am kicking myself over it, since high-waisted shorts are so fashionable now.
What’s something you’re hanging on to, but sort of wish you had the courage to let go of?
**I have a black backless dress that I really should purge, but I can’t bring myself to do it.
If you had to choose 5-10 things from your wardrobe (including shoes & bags) to keep and you had to get rid of everything else, what would you keep?
**2 DVF dresses, AG jeans, black cropped pants, drapey gray 3/4 shirt, black Chanel Jumbo Double-flap bag, gold Zanotti sandals, striped James Perse midi dress, Karen Millen snakeskin sheath, 2 Valentino coats, Nike Flyknit sneakers
What are you wearing RIGHT THIS SECOND?
**t-shirt and shorts (my work attire since I work from home)
I’ve tried to get this done and keep getting interrupted! Haha. 3rd times a charm!
1) Probably Eileen Fisher. I don’t own a single thing from her, and have no idea how they fit, but man — I love the linens and silhouettes.
2) Nothing, actually! I’m a serial closet purger (although I’m trying to do that less because of the waste). Sometimes I’ll see my pile of consignment/garage sale items and think “Why am I getting rid of these??” but as soon as I try them on or try to bring them back into rotation, it’s a reminder that they are out of my wardrobe cycle for a reason.
3) SHOES. I have too many. But I have a hard time letting go, because they always fit, making it difficult to determine whether I’ll ever need them again…
4) softest gray tee ever, boyfriend jeans, birkenstocks, white muscle tank, crossbody bag, huge comfy Zady sweater, cut-offs, culottes, sneakers, and black maxi dress
5) vintage levi’s, black tee, buffalo check flannel and birkenstocks
My post is done and it should be attached now via Comment Luv! Thanks again for posting this. 🙂
Wow! Quite a response to this post, Grechen!
1. The practical side of me says I’d be happy wearing Eileen Fisher for the rest of my life. Or maybe Vince. See? I’m already having trouble with the rules! (The fantasy me says Helmut Lang or Rick Owens…Do I have to be able to actually FIT in my fantasy wardrobe???)
I think Eileen Fisher probably personifies me best. Overall. But a typical outfit for me is a Frank & Eileen poplin button up and a pair of Paige Jimmy Jimmy Skinny Boyfriend jeans with my Vans sneaks. So, this could totally be a lie.
2. I still wish I had a pair of my original Levi’s shrink to fit 501’s from the late 70’s. They were so perfectly molded to my body (My perfect, thin, young body…). Not that I could fit an ankle in them now, but still…
3. There are SOOO many things that I regret buying. They’re the things in my closet that still have the tags on them. Things that I thought I SHOULD buy. That’s never a good thing. Excuse me. I’m going to go finish purging my closet. 😉
4. Keepers: Eileen Fisher black wool topper coat that I wish I had the courage to wear more often than I do because of the sense of drama it brings, my new blue/cream striped Le Minor cotton tee with “Le Fin” (very Montauk!) written in script on the front, my Paige jeans for their perfect fit, Wilt tees in black and white because of the fit and flattery, black leather perforated Vans slip-ons for comfort and cuteness, white RL by Ralph Lauren jeans, J Crew camel v-neck cashmere oversized sweater, new BAGGU leather tote bag in Mahogany, black Sam Edelman Petty boots…pretty great in every way. That’ll do.
5. Dang! I changed my clothes after work and now I’m in the outfit I truly love best…haha! Really, really old Old Navy gray yoga pants, white Inhabit tank, charcoal Free People long-sleeved thermal trapeze top in ratty condition.
1. Money no object? Right now probably Balenciaga, I like the last collection that the designer of Vetements did
2. Hope, because it seems not very gendered and is cut for tall Scandinavians with large frames
3. Isabel Marant Etoile heavy linen viscose oversized tunic in black, purchased from Totokaelo and sold by me a few years ago.. I don’t know what I was thinking.
4. Unwilling to admit that yoga quads are no longer fitting into my skinny APC wool pants so I still have them.
5. Isabel Marant Etoile loose black wool trousers, Nike Air Max black sneakers, Comptoir des Cotonniers light quilted bomber, Everlane E3 cashmere mock turtleneck sweater in grey, Hope black relaxed cotton trousers, Acne Jensen boots, Isabel Marant Etoile linen asymmetrical black tee, Sandro navy knit jogger pants, APC leopard cotton sweater, Theory navy pima tee and I guess I need one more for a bag.. Everlane black backpack
6. J Crew navy pajama set, it’s bedtime.
Edie I bought an Agnes B black trenchcoat secondhand on eBay a few years ago, if that was yours I’ve gotten a lot of wear out of it!
And Gretchen if you want to sell your Hope News trousers I’m looking for a pair size 38 – already have black and taupe though, other colors wanted.
It’s so fun reading everyone’s responses!
1. What if you had to choose ONE brand (money no object) to buy clothes from, what would it be? What brand/designer do you think personifies you the best?
Definitely Rachel Comey. I love her shoes, her dress silhouettes, and especially her prints. Her clothes can run the gamut from playful and relaxed, to more polished with an edge. I’m not sure this is the aesthetic that actually personifies me, but it’s certainly how I’d like to be seen!
2. What’s one thing you’ve purged from your wardrobe you wish you had now?
I have always had a real thing for jumpsuits. I wish I still had this wacky candy-striped wide legged cotton one I got at a thrift store back in college. I think I could pull it off in that Ilana Kohn kind of way.
3. What’s something you’re hanging on to, but sort of wish you had the courage to let go of?
Almost all of the clothing I’ve bought with vacation goggles on– like a terribly ill-fitting batik silk top I got in Indonesia (and it’s cousin, an extremely loud cotton batik short sleeved shirt that I bought for my husband which he laughed out loud at when I presented it to him and which I insisted I would instead wear and never have, not once).
4. If you had to choose 5-10 things from your wardrobe (including shoes & bags) to keep and you had to get rid of everything else, what would you keep?
I’m going to go ahead and pretend it’s summer year round in this scenario, ok? No parkas or raincoats needed for this minimalist fantasy!
– Madewell high rise black jeans (which I wear nearly every day)
-Red No. 6. clog sandals that make every outfit a little more exciting
– Everlane linen t shirt in charcoal
-Blue and white striped linen t shirt from J-Crew (I would like to build a new wardrobe where I’m swaddled entirely in linen I think)
-Ace and Jig Harper Dress in Cardiff
-NikeCourt Classic Deconstructed white sneakers that I just got for summer and now can’t imagine living without.
-Everlane leather backpack that has now become my every-single-day bag
-Madewell high-waisted straight cropped jeans in (gasp!) real denim
-A brightly patterned Dusen Dusen shift dress that adapts to work and play
-Ilana Kohn Gary jumpsuit in blue linen that Iive in all summer
-My burgundy Outdoor Voices sweats that I wear for working out, hanging around the house, and sleeping in
5. What are you wearing RIGHT THIS SECOND?
-the aforementioned Madewell black jeans, also aforementioned Nike sneakers, a grey and white striped sweatshirt/sweaterish top with a zipper up the back by Madewell, Everlane backpack, In God We Trust earrings, my grandpa’s watch, antique wedding ring.
1. This is tough since my style lately is to pair opposite things. Distressed denim with silk camisoles and loafers, dresses with leather biker jackets, etc. If I only had one brand to choose from, how could I pull this off? (That is, I DO hope I’m pulling it off.) If I had to choose, I think I’d go everlane. I love the feminine/menswear/unique slits they have going on.
2. Nothing. intake good care of my clothes and have had some things for 15 years. I never throw things away that I really love.
3. I have 2 pairs of grey “work pants” that are almost bootcut and a grey suit. I work for myself now and can’t imagine wearing these again, but I’m also terrified I’ll be invited to a last-minute corporate meeting and have nothing to wear. I’d literally wear anything in my closet but these pieces so I should probably let them go.
4. Mavi artist’s distressed jeans. Everlane grey silk camisole. Everlane black shorts. Everlane white u neck tee. Fjallraven totepack (backpack when my back hurts or I need my hands, tote when I’m in a hurry)
5. Everlane olive u neck. White distressed jeans. Everlane street shoe in grey.
Q. What if you had to choose ONE brand (money no object) to buy clothes from, what would it be?
A. This is so tough. From a purely style standpoint, I’d have said J Crew, but I struggle with fit with their fit over the past many years. It’s not a brand so much as a marketed ethos, but I have lovely results with many Anthropologie pieces (several brands), which are often cut to accentuate feminine curves rather than fight against them. I also struggle as a petite woman, because as I’ve written here before, some brands I love in theory (Everlane, Eileen F.) don’t always work for my size. So if brand includes store-as-brand, Anthropologie. I’d love the answer to be something more ethical and sustainable (Anthro has it’s share of issues, if not as many as Urban Outfitters) but I haven’t found that brand yet.
Q. What brand/designer do you think personifies you the best?
A. Style but not fit? J Crew. Simple, classic, tailored, pretty.
Q. What’s one thing you’ve purged from your wardrobe you wish you had now?
A. After my dad passed away, my extended family helped us declutter the house. We got rid of a few things I miss — most notably for me a pair of shoes by Aurora Shoe Co I’ve been thinking lately of getting again (Middle English model). Close runner up: My mom had a Missoni sweater from the 70s that got lost in the shuffle. I’d love to have that now.
Q. What’s something you’re hanging on to, but sort of wish you had the courage to let go of?
A. $200 corduroys I bought after I had my twins last summer. They were the first pair of pants that made me feel flattered and lovely and stylish and not enormous. They are too big, and there’s a very small chance I’ll be pregnant again someday, but rationally, I realize they are not likely to be the miracle pants if so that they were this time.
Q. If you had to choose 5-10 things from your wardrobe (including shoes & bags) to keep and you had to get rid of everything else, what would you keep?
A. The ultimate capsule wardrobe!
1. Black leggings by LuLaRoe
2. Olive ankle pants by Kut From the Kloth
3. White shirt with eyelet detail and henley placket from Target/Merona
4. Black blazer from Banana Republic
5. Black PIKO top
6. Black Taos Mary Jane shoes
7. Soft brown backpack from Pier 1 I bought in high school
8. Gray Everlane Navy v-neck tee
9. Pattern LuLaRoe pencil skirt
10. Gray Onitsuko Tiger sneakers
Q. What are you wearing RIGHT THIS SECOND?
A. Black LulaRoe leggings, Chambray button-up from Old Navy, Black Icebreaker wool cami, bare feet, Misfit Shine, charity bracelet, wedding jewelry, cheap post earrings, Warby Parker Glasses, Icebreaker undies, and a Patagonia sports bra x
1. What if you had to choose ONE brand (money no object) to buy clothes from, what would it be?
I remember when the answer to this would have been Marc by Marc Jacobs 10-15 years ago, hehe. I don’t really have one brand that I love now. Maybe Rag & Bone?
What brand/designer do you think personifies you the best? A majority of the stuff in my wardrobe probably comes from Madewell or J. Crew tbh.
2. What’s one thing you’ve purged from your wardrobe you wish you had now?
3. What’s something you’re hanging on to, but sort of wish you had the courage to let go of?
A few pairs of heels I hold on to in case I have to go to a wedding or a night out. Otherwise I very rarely wear heels – or at least non-platform heels like with Rachel Comey sandals – talking more pumps, slingbacks, etc.
4. If you had to choose 5-10 things from your wardrobe (including shoes & bags) to keep and you had to get rid of everything else, what would you keep?
Vince Blair slip ons, a few pairs of Frame Le Garcon jeans, Rag & Bone Dre black jeans, J. Crew thin long-sleeve tee shirts in various colors, a good pair of sunglasses – my most recent purchase is a pair of Karen Walker helter skelters.
5. What are you wearing RIGHT THIS SECOND?
Madewell v-neck tee in dark green and a pair of men’s boxer shorts on this Sunday evening at home!
What if you had to choose ONE brand (money no object) to buy clothes from, what would it be? What brand/designer do you think personifies you the best?
–> I find myself buying a lot from Uniqlo, but if money were no object, probably Anthropologie. So many cute dresses.
What’s one thing you’ve purged from your wardrobe you wish you had now?
–> an Italian gray wool coat I wore till it had holes in it–thick, soft fabric, and with an elegant silhouette.
What’s something you’re hanging on to, but sort of wish you had the courage to let go of?
–> a pair of orange platform shoes my mom wore while she was pregnant with me–slightly too small, I’ve never worn them, but I’m afraid to get rid of them because I think I’d regret it.
If you had to choose 5-10 things from your wardrobe (including shoes & bags) to keep and you had to get rid of everything else, what would you keep?
What are you wearing RIGHT THIS SECOND?
–> what I’d save: Uniqlo ultra stretch dark wash skinny jeans, emerald silk Grana tank, black leather Softwalk ankle boots, vintage brown leather Coach purse, camel-colored cashmere Equipment v-neck sweater, olive green Uniqlo military coat, red American Apparel Gia crepe mini dress, black WHBM jersey maxi dress, gray graphic t shirt, denim jersey Boden tunic dress. What I’m wearing: Old Navy black linen drawstring shorts, blush pink Madewell t-shirt, black Birkenstocks, light wash Uniqlo chambray button-down as an overshirt/light jacket
* What if you had to choose ONE brand (money no object) to buy clothes from, what would it be? What brand/designer do you think personifies you the best?
Gosh. That’s a really difficult one. I adore Chalky Digits (and have many of their pieces) but wouldn’t ever dress myself exclusively in them.
*What’s one thing you’ve purged from your wardrobe you wish you had now?
There’s a pair of Levi’s that I let go of about 12 months ago (after hanging on to them for 5 years!) that were, at that time, too small. Today, they’d fit perfectly and given the lack of trousers I have at the moment, I really wish I’d kept them.
*What’s something you’re hanging on to, but sort of wish you had the courage to let go of?
I have a bunch of “tops” that I think I need to keep. They’re the kind of thing that I’d wear out for drinks/dinner. Thing is I really don’t go out for drinks/dinner very much at all (and have other things that I could/would wear). They’re really not great quality either. Why can’t I let them go?!
*If you had to choose 5-10 things from your wardrobe (including shoes & bags) to keep and you had to get rid of everything else, what would you keep?
Black merino Wild South dress (it’s indestructible and is so easily dressed up or down)
Levi’s 314 straight leg jeans in dark blue
Cream Trenery silk top
Blue Fossil Keeper crossbody bag
My merino sweaters!
My Miz Mooz flats (I have 4 pairs in different colours and embellishments, they’re perfect for me and they don’t make them like that anymore >sadface< )
*What are you wearing RIGHT THIS SECOND?
White Jacqui E blouse
Egyptian blue Max merino faux-wrap sweater
Black moleskins
Egyptian blue Miz Mooz flats

3.What’s something you’re hanging on to, but sort of wish you had the courage to let go of?
A Banana Republic black wool interview suit where the pants are a bit too tight.

Hi Holly – sorry I forgot to answer this – i was eating 2% greek yogurt, which i love with just blueberries (fresh or frozen). also, i try not to eat (on a regular basis) wheat, corn, added sugar, meat, or dairy, i don’t really eat eggs either. i try to follow a “clean” diet – and recommend dr. junger’s book CLEAN highly 😉
Out of all of Everlane’s new releases, I’ve really been debating on buying the dipped tote! Would love to have that in my wardrobe!
1. What if you had to choose ONE brand (money no object) to buy clothes from, what would it be? What brand/designer do you think personifies you the best?
I would have to say Madewell. The brand fits my current stage of life and doesn’t feel like it’s trying too hard. As for a brand that personifies me best, it would be a combination of Madewell and Everlane. Comfortable, neutral, and basic. Their pieces are easy to mix and still result in a well thought out wardrobe.
2. What’s one thing you’ve purged from your wardrobe you wish you had now?
Being 22, I’m still in the stages of creating my wardrobe. So, nothing yet!
3. What’s something you’re hanging on to, but sort of wish you had the courage to let go of?
I have a faux leather jacket I’m in love with and wear with everything, but I can’t let it go. I feel like I need to find another jacket I love just as much before I can let this one go.
4. If you had to choose 5-10 things from your wardrobe (including shoes & bags) to keep and you had to get rid of everything else, what would you keep?

5. Dooney and Burke Nylon North South Triple Zip bag in black
6. Marbled grey tank top
7. Red oversized flannel
8. Short sleeve t-shirt dress in black
9. Coal beanie in black
10. Nike Roshe Ones in Anthracite (gray and rose gold)
5. What are you wearing RIGHT THIS SECOND?
A thrifted black, stretchy knee-length skirt. A thrifted flowy, tie dye off-the-shoulder top in black and gray, simple gold stacker ring, Dooney and Burke North South Triple Zip in black, and my Arizona Birkenstocks.
What if you had to choose ONE brand (money no object) to buy clothes from, what would it be? What brand/designer do you think personifies you the best?
This is tough because I have never really been focused on brands. I love J.Crew, but it’s too preppy for that to be the only thing I can wear. If you count Anthropologie as a brand, I would maybe go with that. The style is elegant and at the same time funky.
What’s one thing you’ve purged from your wardrobe you wish you had now?
When I was in high school, I found a bunch of my mom’s old clothes from the 70s (distressed bell-bottoms, halter tops, etc.) At the time, they did not work for my body and I think I ended up getting rid of them. I wish I hadn’t because I would rock those clothes today.
What’s something you’re hanging on to, but sort of wish you had the courage to let go of?
There’s this emerald green, silky, long-sleeve shirt that I’ve been hanging onto since I thrifted it in college. I’ve worn it maybe once. It looks amazing on me, but does not fit my lifestyle.
