I’m in Atlanta this weekend for my mother’s birthday and here’s what I wore yesterday.
Some observations:
You’ll notice I’m wearing a jacket, after I mentioned that I don’t wear jackets, but thought it would be practical for travel. As I do, I decided to do an experiment and wear the jacket instead of a cardigan or pullover, and see if I liked it better. I do appreciate having more accessible pockets for ID, water, snacks, etc. and it was a good layer for the day.
BUT. And here’s where I’ll probably lose a lot of you: it irritated me TO NO END that my olive jacket clashes so bad with my also-olive-but-slightly-darker carry-on suitcase. Not that I would want them to match, but neither do I much like to wear/carry variations of the same color. Even the gray sweater, gray bag bothers me a little. So totally irrational.
These shoes have really seen their last days. I’m so over them, and they’ve stretched out quite a bit more with several years of wear that they’re not as comfortable as my newer, less clunky Vince Blair sneakers. But as I mentioned above, there is NO WAY I was going to wear my gray/brown shoes with a gray sweater and a gray bag. Couldn’t do it. And these are my default travel shoes lately, since I don’t mind wearing them in light rain, and they’re warm for sneakers.
Finally, the Everlane sweater is a great layer for traveling – when I got to Atlanta I removed my jacket for the rest of the day. The problem with it is that the neck is pretty tight (that’s probably why in the image at Everlane the model is tugging at it!!). I get used to it after a little while, but I’d be happier if it was a little less snug. And the pulling at the neck/chest is annoying, and frankly doesn’t make sense, because I don’t have a chest to speak of. It might just be that it sticks to the cami I’m wearing underneath. Anyway, I was comfortable in it all day, and warm enough, so it works, but it could absolutely be better with a few tweaks.

More on what I packed and the carry-on suitcase in another post. Happy Friday!! I hope you have a wonderful weekend.
I’m so relieved to know I’m not the only one who feels compelled to consider my luggage when dressing for travel. I might be something of a weirdo… but at least I’m not the only one.
How long have you had those Vince sneakers? I’ve been wanting a pair but I’ve noticed they wear out rather quickly. They are quite a splurge for slip – ons.
i’ve had them for about three years. i wouldn’t consider them “worn out” specifically, they just have stretched out so that they feel a little bigger than i like. but then again, i don’t wear socks, and they would probably feel less big if i did.
i’ve had the other pair for a couple of years and they’re not as stretched as these, or worn looking at all. they’re an investment up front, for sure, but they’re incredibly comfortable, more than any other pair of sneakers i’ve tried. i’m going to get the black perforated pair next time shopbop has a code…
haha.. yes, i think we’re weirdos…but there are worse things!
Ha – we just got to Atlanta too – trade show for my husband. We drove so significantly less chic than you 😉
I don’t mind trying something newish for a short flight, but I tried a new bra for a trip to China last year and boy was that a bad idea. So now – if it’s not tested, it doesn’t go on a flight more than 3 hours (because that 3 hr flight is at least double when it comes to getting to the airport, waiting, getting to lodgings at arrival etc). Apparently I’ve become a fuddy duddy about travel – I want things just so…..In the photo, your rolling bag looks black so I didn’t even give it a glance. None of my luggage matches anything else & that’s ok. Like my kitchen pans, I buy exactly the pieces that make sense for me – no sets – and if I find it on sale – I won’t pass it up. Have I mentioned I have a luggage obsession?
Enjoy the weekend!
I’m going to have to disagree here – I really like the almost matching olive and grey shades. So chic! Of course it is *possible* that they clash hideously in real life. Still, the Atlanta airport is lucky to have such a put together traveller.
I love the look of something “almost” matching, but I also can’t wear it! Realistically, I know it looks really cool, but I feel so uncoordinated when it is on me. It’s nice to know I’m not the only one. There should be some kind of support form on Grechen’s Closet for those of us with style-related struggles…..
they don’t clash exactly, i just don’t like the idea that they’re both supposed to be “olive” if that makes any sense at all. against my olive jacket, the suitcase is definitely more brown looking…
thank you 🙂
haha! there are so many…
hope you enjoyed atlanta!!
we’ve spent the days working puzzles and planning summer vacation. not doing much else. which is perfect 😉
i don’t want things to match, really, i just want to wear different colors generally – like denim, black & white, or denim, gray and black. other than black, i just don’t like wearing “shades” of the same color. not on purpose anyway. not that i won’t, or that it bothers me so much i can’t stand it…i just don’t prefer it.
ha! way too much analysis…
