I was interviewed this weekend by a new student newspaper at the University of Texas, The Horn, for a piece they’re doing on local fashion bloggers, and one of the questions Jasmin asked was “how do you define your style?” I’ve always had a hard time doing that, because I’ve never thought about how to label myself; I don’t put much stock in applying “names” to things. But if I had to, I guess I’d call my style “casual chic.” Or maybe just casual
My ideal outfit is a pair of jeans (Goldsign), a white t-shirt (James Perse), long cashmere cardigan (Inhabit NY) & a pair of ballet flats (Repetto) or clogs. Throw in an Alexander Wang bag, a pair of Melissa Joy Manning hoops, and I’m good to go. I would vary that a bit by maybe switching the jeans for a long black skirt, or trading the cashmere cardigan for a military jacket, but that’s the essence of my style: casual & easy, featuring luxurious fabrics and interesting styles. I love simple & subtle, but always add one piece (usually a bag) with an unexpected detail that stands out, but doesn’t scream “look at me!!!!!”
So, I was still thinking about my style, and what I want to wear this Fall (it was something else we talked about), when I pulled up Shopbop to check out the new arrivals (I do this religiously every morning, sometimes even before I check my e-mail…) and was mesmerized by their Ultimate Closet feature this week. Usually I just gloss over these types of features; I’m not much for anyone telling me how to style things, but if I could, I would literally buy every piece in the feature. And wear them ALL Fall & Winter.

In this case, I LOVE the styling they did for the feature – I have never given this Roxanne Diane maxi dress a second look because it looks shapeless and boring, but they’ve made it interesting by pairing it with a long wrap sweater and a belt:
I WANT TO WEAR THAT (I’d move the belt up a bit higher so it sat on my waist) all Fall. And these:
Sigh. If only I believed it was every going to get cooler here. And I had a bigger bank account
I have tried for years to make my closet “the ultimate closet” full of things that all go together and are essentially timeless, so I love the idea of buying 10 pieces to mix and match all season…
What do you want to wear for Fall? How do you define your style when someone asks? How would you define my style?
