Net-a-Porter Outnet Launches!

by grechen on April 16, 2009 | SUBSCRIBE | TWITTER | FACEBOOK |

We’ve been hearing about the new “outlet” version of Net-a-Porter, Outnet for months, and now it’s finally here. Outnet is where Net-a-Porter’s out-of-season/last year’s designs go to get marked down, at least 30-80%. They’re also, as they say, going to “keep things interesting” by offering pop-up sales and limited time offers similar to sample sale sites. The next pop-up sale for example, starts April 24 and features Spring dresses for up to 80% off. They’ll also host giveaways, and going, going, gone sales, where the price on a coveted item drops during the day – see how low you’ll let it go before you snag it!

This is all very exciting, and great retail concepts, but what about the stuff? From what I can tell so far, the prices are great, and the selection, good. If you’re a luxury designer handbag or shoes junkie, this is the shopping site for you. Outnet features the same outfit styling and showcase as Net-a-Porter, and is very easy to search, browse, and checkout. Overall, I think it’s a cool site, and great if you’re willing to wait months for something you saw on Net-a-Porter to make it to Outnet at a discount.

Some of the highlights…

The New Mini Messenger.

by grechen on March 25, 2009 | SUBSCRIBE | TWITTER | FACEBOOK |

I will always be a big-bag girl – I love the way bigger bags look on most women, but they’re also much more practical for daily use. I personally carry mostly BIG bags, but I do have one smaller bag (a Chloe Paddington camera messenger bag) that I use when I need a small bag (which is hardly ever…). Messenger style is really the only way I like smaller bags – it’s a more flattering way to wear small bags than tucked under your arm, and way more fashion-forward.

My all-time favorite mini-messenger bag was the mini Billie by Mayle, which are all gone by now, but luckily this season, the mini-messenger is making a huge comeback.

Here are some of my favorites:

I love See by Chloe’s new perforated leather bags, especially the bright colors. And the Miu Miu is just gorgeous…

See by Chloe at Net-a-Porter: $400Miu Miu at Net-a-Porter: $425

This West/Feren bag is so tiny, I can’t imagine what it would even carry, but the ethnic pattern and simple style is very cool:

West/Feren at Ravinstyle: $172

West/Feren at Ravinstyle: $172

This is just a great, easy, inexpensive weekend messenger bag. The leather looks so supple, and while the hardware looks a little fussy in the picture, I think in real life, it works:

Topshop Leather Dogclip Satchel: $100

Topshop Leather Dogclip Satchel: $100

This Vanessa Bruno bag would be totally acceptable as a fancy schmancy evening bag, but would also work to give some edge to a pair of distressed jeans and white t-shirt. And the Wendy Nichols bag is so fantastically simple, easy, and clean.

Vanessa Bruno: $513

Vanessa Bruno Cuir Glace: $513

Wendy Nichol Small Cross City Bag at Bird: $395

Wendy Nichol: $395

I always love a good Hayden-Harnett bag…this one is a bag and wallet in one, with a long strap. Genius. Save 15% at Hayden-Harnett through June 1 with code “loyal.”

Hayden-Harnett KOKO: $298

Hayden-Harnett KOKO: $298

I actually nearly bought this Jill Stuart bag in black when it was on sale for about $100 at Shopbop…there was just something about it I loved – although I can’t say when I would have ever used it…

Jill Stuart at Bloomingdale's: $298

Jill Stuart at Bloomingdale's: $298

I ADORE this variation on the Trigger by Botkier. (Use code “luckybreaks12″ to save 25% off off the next two bags & more at Luna Boston!)

Small Botkier Trigger Cross-Body: $395

Small Botkier Trigger Cross-Body: $395

And this is the only mini-messenger I’d actually consider buying (unless I can find a cute Mini Billie on ebay or something…). I have a Morning After bag in tangerine and the color is more versatile than you think. This bag looks big enough to hold my essentials, and I’m a sucker for Rebecca’s hardware.

Rebecca Minkoff Morning After Clutch: $330

Rebecca Minkoff Morning After Clutch: $330

And finally, the roundup from shopbop…the Marc by Marc Jacobs turnlock style is sticky – I love it in this small messenger bag. And you KNOW my love for Jerome Dreyfuss – this Steve bag is so cool. But…you can never go wrong with LeSportsac!

Marc by Marc Jacobs at Shopbop: $198

Marc by Marc Jacobs: $198

Jerome Dreyfuss at Shopbop: $488

Jerome Dreyfuss: $488

Lesportsac at Shopbop: $48

Which one is your favorite? do you favor small or big bags? are you going to be carrying a mini-messenger this season?

See by Chloe Leather Jacket

by grechen on January 11, 2008 | SUBSCRIBE | TWITTER | FACEBOOK |

One of my fashion-related New Year’s resolutions this year is NO MORE HOODIES!!!! I have an unhealthy addiction to hoodies, but realize they can look a bit juvenile , especially when combined with a leather jacket. Which brings me to another of my fashion-related New Year’s resolutions…buy a leather jacket. I had my eye on a nice, distressed Mike & Chris Leather jacket/hoody, but while I love it, I can see how it would look dated in a few years, and honestly, it’s not necessarily the right look for a 35 year old….or at least THIS 35 year old :-)

So, on my search for a sophisticated, more classic look, I found this beauty by See by Chloe at shoptwigs. It would be perfect for me; I love the color for any season, the styling is so flattering (love the belt), and the 3/4 sleeves are always chic. Now, if only I could find it for 1/100th the price….which, of course, leads to another of my New Year’s resolutions: spend less money!!!

Anyway, it’s still beautiful, and I won’t stop coveting it, but I’m sure I’ll find something I love at a fraction of the price for this See by Chloe piece. I’ll keep you posted!
