Grechen’s Closet own resident super-Polyvore stylist Madeline Rhodes takes on my beloved UGGs (LOL) with her own finds for more Fabu Winter Footwear:

Uggs, don’t take this the wrong way… but I’m thinking it’s time that
we women, in need of winter footwear, move on. Please know that you
have kept our feet warm and cozy, and we appreciate you for that, but
you have also made all of our feet look alike (aka muffin foot). So,
2010 is here and I believe that along with the new year, It’s time for
a sleeker, more unique, winter boot look… time for funky and fun,
stylish and unusual… and most important, as always, practicality.

Ladies, if you’re on board with the boot revolution, come with me and
I’ll show you some pretty fabulous finds I recently discovered. These
are looks that can be taken from work to play. Looks that can be woven
into cool outfits and actually enhance the overall image you are going
for. Allow your personality to shine through your boot choice.

There’s something here for each of you– a classic pair, a basic,
staple look, a funky tweed ensemble, a pair with ultra sporty flair, a
sleek and sophisticated duo, and lastly, a multicolored pair that
falls somewhere in the middle of that spectrum. What’s the best part?
They will all keep your feet warm, dry and comfortable. Ohhh, gotta
love when practicality and style come as a pair.

p.s., Uggs, in case I was too harsh, I should mention that I advise
all readers to keep you [Uggs] around for less fashionable moments–
milk and egg types of errands, picking the kids up, getting to the
gym, etc. They are lovely and comfy in their own way.

(note from grechen: I totally agree with the above statement, I recommend that everyone own a pair of UGGs, but please please please reserve them for dog walks, around the house, and always wear them with pants :) )

How to wear ponchos!

by grechen on November 11, 2009 | SUBSCRIBE | TWITTER | FACEBOOK |

Okay…so it seems like ponchos are back, no matter how hard I try to ignore them, they’re popping up everywhere. I’m just bitter because I succumbed to the last “poncho” craze (remember? about 5-6 years ago?) and spend a LOT of money on a fringed poncho. It was nice, very soft, pretty basic, but I didn’t wear it, I felt too silly. I think it was too big, and it looked a lot like I was just trying to hide behind it…not a good look! A lot of the ponchos I’m seeing today, I might be tempted to try again…but I would definitely recommend NOT spending a lot of money on a poncho, unless you’re absolutely sure it’s “you” and you’ll wear it when everyone else is not. Which is why I’m excited to present this week’s installment of “How to wear” by super-polyvore stylist Madeline Rhodes!!

Madeline picked out some cute, but super-affordable ponchos and put together some really great outfits with them (um, now I’m dying for that Golden Goose sweatshirt in this first set…) – the second poncho is definitely my favorite. What do you think? Would you wear a poncho? Which set is your favorite?

Here’s what Madeline had to say about ponchos, and why she chose these looks:

Ponchos. You read it right… and not the ones you wear in the rain, but rather those created out of luxurious fabrics and bold patterns. The poncho is rolling out in stores, as you read this, in all shapes, colors and sizes… and a lot of us are wondering, “how the heck are you supposed to wear that thing?” Considering the oddness of the poncho– the fact that it’s ancestor is simply a rectangle of material, with a hole for the head to poke through, it’s come a long, long way. The looks you see here range from a Sunday Morning lounge look, to ensembles that are wearable for work, or out to dinner, and lastly, an extra funky, mixed up look for those nights where you’re just feeling like taking a few risks (keep those accessories simple when you chose an outfit like this!). Have fun and enjoy this versatile piece! I’m thinking Grechen will love it for its comfort!

How to wear sequins!

by grechen on November 6, 2009 | SUBSCRIBE | TWITTER | FACEBOOK |

Grechen’s Closet super-fabulous expert polyvore-stylist Madeline Rhodes tackles sequins this time in her polyvore set – just when you think you couldn’t “do” sequins…

Here’s what Madeline has to say about styling trends:

Let’s face it… anything that comes off the runway and into our wardrobe is a bit scary… but it really shouldn’t be! This set demonstrates how an average gal, like one of us, can bring sequins into her wardrobe without getting intimidated. By taking two of the season’s hottest trends, the blazer and sequins, and combining them into one piece, the sequined blazer, we are off to a good start. Believe it or not, sequins are totally easy to dress down, which I did here by adding a jersey knit, heather gray top, some muted booties, and a straightforward necklace. Now that you’ve got the basics down, don’t be afraid to accessorize, within reason. I threw a cute printed clutch into the equation and topped it off with a dusky pink, handwoven, silk scarf that has minor shimmer detail. Viola, you’ve got yourself a sequin ensemble! Enjoy!

I love it!! I might even be able to pull that off…you know how I love to dress down :)
Thanks Madeline!!!

This sweet little birdie “pouchette” by Marc by Marc Jacobs is entirely too small for me, but I would love to just have it to look at. Okay, no, not really, but isn’t it lovely? I like what he did this Fall putting little creatures everywhere….

And now, I give you my twitter friend, Polyvore/Outfit expert Madeline Rhodes to show us how to style this piece. (How amazing is that Antik Batik top??)
