Outfit: James Perse Lasts Forever

by grechen on September 28, 2011 | SUBSCRIBE | TWITTER | FACEBOOK |

wearing: James Perse fleece skirt | James Perse slub button-down | Madewell necklace | Swedish Hasbeens clogs | Jas M.B. bag

Speaking of Swedish Hasbeens…I decided to take these out for a wear today; it’s been a while. Did anyone snag a pair on sale yet? With the endless code? There’s still a size 6 & 7 in red on sale at Endless + 20% off :)

And I know I talk about this all the time, but I hope you can see that I also practice what I preach, at least in terms of trying to focus on buying pieces that will last forever. Sometimes I don’t, I’ll admit – I buy something I love, or think I love, but after a while, I don’t love it anymore (that mostly happens when I get sucked in by the color, or “amazing” price).

The only brand that NEVER happens with is James Perse. I DO NOT GET RID OF JAMES PERSE, unless it just absolutely doesn’t fit me anymore. I don’t ever HAVE to get rid of James Perse pieces, because they last for years. And years. And I usually love them for years, and years.

Take this skirt, for example. It’s at least 4 years old, maybe more, so is the top. And they’re both as good as new. They’ve been through the wash countless times, worn many more times, and still don’t show their wear. Two out of the 10 JP t-shirts I own have developed very small holes in them, which I’m not happy about, but they’re not new either.

I feel the same way about Inhabit NY and Jas M.B. handbags; these are my “holy grail” brands. Even if I did have to pay full price for these designers (but I don’t. You don’t either), it would be 100% worth it. My cost-per-wear for a lot of my pieces from James Perse, Inhabit & Jas M.B. is fast approaching $1.00 or less. Ideally, I’d like for EVERYTHING in my closet to get to a cost-per-wear of as close to $0.01 as possible. That means, I need to have less, and wear what I do have more often. Which is easy with those brands, because none of the pieces ever look dated; they’re always timeless.

What brands are your “holy grail” brands? What are some of your favorite, most-loved pieces? Do tell!

Oh, and if you haven’t seen yet, check out the new Refinery29 Reserve deal for Tee-Zone, it’s spend $50, get $100 credit or spend $100 and get $200 credit. Tee-Zone has JAMES PERSE!!!! But even since yesterday, I’ve noticed some of the colors/sizes are selling out. And yes, I did get this deal. More on that in another post.

Ouftit: Spotted

wearing: Vintage polka-dot skirt | James Perse tee | Vintage belt | No6 Clogs

Hello!! I missed you guys last week, did you even know I was gone? ;)

I was in NYC for the Independent Fashion Bloggers conference (moderating a panel – with Coco Rocha, no less!!), and even though I came back on Friday, and did absolutely NOTHING over the weekend, I’m still worn out. Or maybe I’m just overwhelmed with trying to follow-up with everyone I met and recap the amazing messages I heard at the conference. And even though I was surrounded by fashion bloggers with fancy cameras, I didn’t get an outfit picture ONE day I was there, so I was going to recreate them for you this week. Not including this one today. I’m too tired for that today!

The skirt I’m wearing, I’m actually “borrowing” from the hunt.gather.style pop-up shop. I thought I’d wear it with a silk blouse for the conference, but decided not to, so I think I’ll put it back in the shop (in case anyone’s interested!). I love the subtle pleats and the polka-dots of course. It’s a little longer than I think is very flattering on me, but I don’t mind it; if you’re taller, it will fall right at your knees.

I also decided while at the conference/in NYC, I’d like to wear “brighter” lip color sometimes. I saw so many ladies looking amazing in their bright lips; I think it would be fun to try. Any MUAs out there (Val?) who can suggest a good color for me based on my skin tone? I have no idea…

Here’s to an amazing week ahead!! Glad to be back (although not really, it’s 105 again today)

Outfit: Harem Skirt?

by grechen on June 23, 2011 | SUBSCRIBE | TWITTER | FACEBOOK |

wearing: Marithe Francois Girbaud skirt (secondhand) | James Perse tee | Madewell necklace (the longer one) | Candance Ang necklace | 3.1 Philip Lim bag | Sergio Rossi shoes (gifted)

So, I’m trying my hand at man-repelling* today, on purpose. If you listen to my fiance, (almost) all my outfits are man-repelling LOL – but today, I’m conscious of it. The moment I put this skirt on at MOSS the other day, I proclaimed “this is SO man-repelling!” – ask Sari, she was there :) But I love it. It’s so fun – and “interesting.” And I think I can pull it off. It feels good, and fun, and care-free, and easy (=Grechen), so I used up my credit at the consignment store and went for it. And since I never actually had a pair of Girbaud jeans in the 90′s, I felt like it was time I owned something from the iconic brand.

Obviously, it’s voluminous and has a bubble hem, so I’ll always balance it out with something fitted on top, and it looks best with HIGH heels, but I tried it on with flat sandals, and it wasn’t awful. I’d like to add a belt, but I don’t have one that’s quite appropriate for this at the moment.

What do you think? Man-repelling? or not?

*I give TOTAL and complete credit to Leandra for coining the term “man repeller” – she is genius & hilarious.

Outfit: Out

wearing: H&M Skirt | James Perse v-neck tee | Steve Madden sandals | J.W. Hulme Bag | glasses from Spexclub

I realized when I was looking at these pictures that I forgot my accessories! oops!! I’ll wear some, I promise :)

I’m trying today to NOT tuck my shirt into my skirt – does it work? I don’t know. I just feel like with this skirt, my hips are SO pronounced when my shirt’s tucked in, because the waist is smocked; I wanted to try something different. And I wore black on top & my spike-y necklace to try and harden it up a little bit. I’m not sure that works either. I think I just like to think I’m edgier than I really am.

Outfit: What More do you need?

This is totally random, but I was catching up on old episodes of Californication last night (I’m not liking season 3 very much…) and Hank takes Becca to buy clothes and doesn’t understand that she wants to buy a transparent shirt for $200+ and says that he’s a man, he has a uniform. Which made [...]

I tried on this skirt from Anthropologie several weeks ago and didn’t buy it. I loved it, and thought it would be perfect for me, but I didn’t have the cash to spend on it at the time, so I decided to wait. Then, I went back to buy it before my trip to Florida [...]

I really suck at packing. Since I stopped traveling for work 6 years ago, most of my travel has been by car. Now that we’re in Austin, I have to fly to see my family, and I forgot how much I hate to pack everything into a small carry-on… Anyway, I’m set, and I’ve got [...]
