another note from grechen: I’m so excited something like this has finally popped up as a place to shop for Israeli designers online. Please check it out…the handbags from Kisim, Magnes Sisters, and Efika are absolutely gorgeous, but I admit, I’m also falling head over heels for the duck doll from Manuella!

Review: Botkier Rose Satchel

by grechen on February 25, 2008 | SUBSCRIBE | TWITTER | FACEBOOK |

I cannot say enough how lovely this bag is. I haven’t loved Botkier recently, not since their first year, really, so I didn’t expect to find anything current that really spoke to me. But the moment I saw this one, I knew I needed it. And I don’t normally “go” for black bags, but this one stood out because of the gothic rose coin purse, as well as the mesh and leather twisted leather handles. I also came to realize after I carried each of my bags a different day the month before, that I appreciate bags that have both a shoulder strap AND handles (although I’ve only ever carried this one by the handles).

The leather is incredibly soft and supple and I just love all the cool details, like the gathered front pocket, the narrow panels on the front, and the super-cool details like the twisted leather handles and of course, the rose coin purse. In comparison with my Trigger from many years ago, the bag itself is very light – it must be the leather. I can load it up with all my stuff and it’s very comfortable to carry on my shoulder or by hand. All in all, it’s an incredibly fun and beautiful bag. I’ll carry it more in the Fall/Winter than Spring/Summer, but it will definitely be on heavy rotation for several years.

A few more things from my Active Endeavors order last week – along with the Mike & Chris hoody posted below. The Trovata Aft Short Sleeve Hoody (I seriously have a thing for hoodies), and the Lauren Merkin Dylan Handbag.

I love Trovata, but hadn’t purchased anything from the line until now. They really have casual chic down; the entire collection is totally wearable, and timeless, in my opinion. I decided to try this hoody because I wanted something short-sleeved I could just wear over a tank top, but with character. The white adds some brightness to my outfits, without being overkill (I don’t do prints…) and the fit is good. It may be a little big, but I had to get the large to fit around my hips.

The Lauren Merkin bag is very cool – it’s my first bag by her…she mostly does clutches, and I don’t have much need for a clutch. I wanted something exactly like this – a smaller bag I could wear messenger style, that wasn’t brown. I already have a smaller Chloe Paddington messenger style bag, now I wanted something black or grey. The Dylan is washed lambskin, so it is kind of a faded black that looks almost like suede, but it’s not. It has two sections inside, a zipper pocket and two open pockets which are great for a phone and iPod. The coolest thing is that you can adjust the straps very easily by pulling the ends through – so you can wear it messenger or shoulder style (as seen above). The braided strap is a very nice touch, and I find the quality of the leather and workmanship to be superb. I did figure out yesterday after I took these pictures that my makeup bag is just too thick to carry with this bag – that’s why it doesn’t hang right messenger style. If I take it out, it falls flatter against my hips and looks much better….I will need to get a new makeup bag that’s narrower then, because that’s my key to changing out bags so often – I just move over my wallet and makeup bag, and I’m good!

Review: Loeffler Randall Handbag

April 16, 2007

It’s another bag!! I couldn’t resist the chance to try one of Loeffler Randall’s first bags from their brand new handbag line, so I decided to give the Kitty bag a try. I must admit, it looked very ‘interesting’ online, and without having seen it in person, I was a little wary of what it [...]

Review: Anna Corinna Lotus Tote

July 6, 2006

This is a fabulous bag. It’s the smaller size Lotus Tote by Anna Corrina and it’s just perfect. When I first started carrying it, I thought I would prefer the larger size, but honestly, this is big enough. It holds my large wallet, makeupbag, keys, phone, a magazine and bottle of water comfortably. And becuase [...]

Review: Begeren Moorea Tote

July 5, 2006

I wrote about new bag designer Begeren a while ago, and just received my two bags for review last week; the Moorea tote above, and the Venice Hobo, reviewed in another entry. I’ve carried them already a few times each, and I love them both. The Moorea tote is by far Begeren’s best seller, and [...]

Review: Marc Jacobs Ursula Bag

April 20, 2006

Along with everyone else, I’ve been on a dress kick this month. I love dresses and skirts in warmer weather – I think they’re cooler and infinitely more flattering than shorts or capris (God help us…). But even with all the beautiful dresses designers are offering this season, it’s been quite difficult, and frankly sometimes [...]
