Everlane Poplin square shirt dress | size 6
(IRL the dress is a darker navy more like it appears on Everlane’s site –
I lightened up the photos a bit to show more detail)
This is not my dress; I wanted to buy some things for my sister with the credits I have at Everlane and this is one of the items she chose. I had them delivered to my house since she’ll be here next week, and I couldn’t resist trying this on, just to see how it fit.
And I like it a lot. Not on me; I wouldn’t wear it, but the quality is very good, and I really love the new cotton poplin, it’s cool, crisp, and feels wonderful. The fit is nice – oversized, definitely – but still narrow at the hips and below. For example, the size 6 JUST fits my hips. My sister is shaped very differently from me: she has a larger bust and middle (she has two kids), but no hips/butt to speak of and very slim legs, so I think this dress will suit her nicely. For me, there’s too much fabric up top (I’d prefer their v-neck tank dress) and it’s too short.
Who has this dress? What did you think of the sizing/fit? If you’ve been thinking about it, I would encourage you to try it; I think it’s a great dress, and seems much more expensive than it is. It’s short though 🙂
I love it! I can’t wait to try it on and hopefully wear it next week! Fingers crossed it works on me. 🙂
I don’t have the poplin dress, but I did get the poplin skirt and I love it. It’s very casual, can wrinkle a bit, but I think it lends itself to the “easy” wear of it. I love the poplin material especially for their skirts (and probably dresses) because it’s full and light but has a flare to it, which means it doesn’t touch my body…which means it doesn’t make me feel gross in the sweltering heat. It’s definitely become my hot weather skirt for sure!
Hi. The dress is cute on you ! Is there a hem that could be let down and if so, how much ??? Thanks.
I have had this dress in my cart and have just been waiting to actually purchase. I ruminate a lot before buying things online. It’s pretty short on you, so on me it may be too short to wear in public because I think I’m several inches taller than you, but it looks like the kind of dress that would look good over pants, so I don’t think I mind.
there’s about 2.5 – 3″ to let down, but the last button is there at the bottom, about an inch up, if that matters…
hi sasha! i just replied to lisa’s question about the hem – there’s almost 3″ that could be let down if you needed to…
yes! that’s the great thing about this dress, and the poplin material in general – it’s so soft, and lightweight, you feel like you’re not wearing anything. i’m impressed 🙂
don’t know about the wrinkling part though, but that never really bothers me!
This one looks intriguing. Don’t suppose your sister wants to model it for us when she visits so we can see it on her different shape? I am quite short (5’3), but also post-kids and have a bit of a bust, but also some curve in my butt and thighs. The boxy Everlane things haven’t been right on me proportion-wise, but this might have potential in a small-enough size. I currently have my sleeveless dress for sale, because while it fit beautifully when I had a little extra post-kid curve (really!) it just hangs off me weirdly now that I’ve lost most of the baby weight. Haven’t tried it with a tee underneath though, and saw that look recently and might give it another go, or try this one.
She might! With enough persuasion 😉 I thought it would be cool to show it on both of us.
Hi Grechen! Thanks for the shout out/link on yesterday’s post! I really appreciate it! I got this poplin square shirt dress in white which was waaay too sheer. I liked the style so I’m going to try it out in this blue color and see if I like it better 🙂
How does it measure? Shoulder to hem? I like it a lot but won’t wear it if it’s too short!
They should have pretty accurate measurements at Everlane, I’ve compared them before and found them to be correct
I love it! I’d go for this in a heartbeat if it were a tad longer. I always hesitate to have things re-hemmed since the previous hem doesn’t always steam out properly, leaving a line.
Thanks for this review. I have been equivocating over this dress since it came out. I like it, but would probably wear it over pants because of the length, and I REALLY don’t need another tunic-like top. I am interested your use of the descriptor “crisp.” I ordered the relaxed poplin shirt some time ago which was described by Everlane as crisp, but it wasn’t at all, which was a major disappointment. Is this in a different fabric weight? How about the long striped poplin shirtdresses? Are they in a heavier weight? I would buy more, but I am cautious now, as it is a pain to do returns from Canada.
i’m pretty sure my definition of “crisp” is different from most – i guess i consider cotton crisp if it tends not to wrinkle AS easily, and if it has a more “polished” look to it, more refined, and a little heavier than light-weight cotton. (keep in mind i usually wear cotton jersey, so almost anything is “crisp” to me!!) i would probably consider the relaxed poplin shirt (i have the striped one) crisp, by my standards, but i felt like the new cotton poplin square styles were even MORe crisp, if that makes sense. But given that assessment i have only worn my cotton poplin square shirt once and this dress not at all…
Haha. Grechen you make me smile too much. I think your definition is certainly different from mine, although probably in line with that of Everlane. Just for fun I looked around on web dictionaries for definitions of crisp shirts, and I have copied this one which I think sums it up the best: ‘starched and properly pressed with sharp creases’. That is, something that wrinkles VERY easily. I think one has to be around my age or older to remember what expectations of a crisp shirt used to be (the bane of many a laundress and housewife in the so called good old days — not so much.)
oh my gosh…that is the EXACT opposite from my definition!!
Oh yes, Kathryn! Crisp means uncomfortable to me. I remember my mom ironing my dad’s work shirts with “Easy-on” spray starch in an aerosol can…I can even remember the smell. I like my white shirts a little rumpled!
Well said! I’m certainly not looking for starchy, just enough weight so it hangs and is not see through, i.e. a real shirt dress, not a beach cover-up in shirt dress style. The relaxed poplin shirt I got was just so huge, limp and see through that I can only envisage wearing it over bathing suits or tank tops when I don’t want the sun on my arms. And I already have stuff like that. I can fully appreciate that it would work beautifully for those with more fun/creative/casual work lives (so jealous of you Grechen!). But in ov er 50% of my volunteer work I need to be “crisp and professional” (starchy optional) as the expression goes LOL.
I have this dress and I love it! I already had the silk square shirt in size 10, so I also ordered the dress in a 10, but found it was too wide and in profile it “belled out” too much. Maybe it’s because the fabric drapes differently than a silk (ooh, imagine this in a silk version!)? In any case, I reordered a size 8 and just got that yesterday and it is much better. I could probably go down to a 6 (which is not a typical size for me even in oversized Everlane styles), but then I think it would lose that easy, slouchy look, so I will keep the 8. On me it hit an inch or two above the knee (similar to how it looks on you), which is a length I’m comfortable in. I’m 5’4″, 36DD, and do have a moderate post-baby belly and I find the dress flattering. The fabric has a nice sheen that reminds me of cotton sateen.
