Everlane Modern Oxford (gift from Everlane to review) | true to size (I’m wearing my normal size 8)
Elizabeth Suzann Cecilia Pants (gift to review) | size 6
Everlane relaxed linen shirt | size 6
So, one benefit of it being “not hot” lately (at least not normal August temperatures for Texas) is that I can wear shoes, which makes me feel like fall is just around the corner. Everlane sent me the new modern oxford to review* for you late last week, and I wore them all day on Friday to test out.
I took my “normal” size 8 and they’re definitely the right size (they accidentally sent me a size 9 at first, which was much too long). The shoes really are so beautiful; the leather is substantial and the sole is sturdy. After a full day of wear, my right toes felt a little squished, and my left was fine. As with the modern loafer, these will stretch and become more comfortable with wear, although you might want to size up a 1/2 size if you’re on the upper edge of your sizing because they’re definitely narrow.
Now, my challenge is styling them. I mean, I like this outfit, simple and easy, and I also wore them with my slouchy 6397 jeans and a white tee, but I’m also inclined to want to wear them with a flowy, silk skirt and tee. I love the dichotomy of feminine/masculine, and the way that sort of outfit challenges conventional sartorial standards. Ideas…ideas.
How would you style them? What do you think of Everlane’s Modern Oxford? Will you order a pair? (I love love love the blush color also – so beautiful)

*Everlane sometimes sends me items to review. They have no expectation of a positive review, or indeed any coverage at all. I was not paid to write this post or to feature the shoes.
The Elizabeth Suzann Marlena dress. Any James Perse dresses!! These are not my typical style but I love them!
i will try them with the marlena dress – the problem is i love the idea more than i love the look on me; my larger calves don’t lend themselves well to wearing shoes like this (that don’t show much of my foot) with dresses/skirts. not that i don’t do it anyway , but i don’t always love the look on me!!
they’re not my typical style either, but since i got my freda salvador open oxfords, i’ve thought i might like to try a more traditional style. i think the slightly pointed toe gives them a more feminine, modern look that’s very interesting.
The toes are just too pointy for me. I like the shoe aesthetically, but I’d never wear them. I just really hate how I look in pointy toed shoes.
I do like some of the looks they have with these shoes, like a wide leg trouser, or the outfit you have on here. I sort of wish I could wear them, but I just know as soon as I put them on, I’d be hatin’ on those toes!
It’s not a bad shoe, but there’s a bit of a design flaw for me– it comes up too high towards the ankle in the front, which would prevent it from looking good with skirts and dresses and would shorten legs, especially in darker colors. I can see it worn with wider leg pants or straight cut jeans very nicely.
yes – this exactly. i would wear them more with skirts/dresses if they showed more of my foot and didn’t cut up so high. i think if you are thin of ankle, then this style could look really cute like that. but i don’t have ankles 🙁
I don’t think it would matter much, thin or thicker ankles…
So, I currently have a pair of Born oxfords in close to oxblood color but a little more red. The heels are starting to wear out on them and I haven’t been able to find anything to replace them. I am tempted by these but I’ve returned the last five or so items I’ve ordered from Everlane.
I would love to have the Borns repaired but my google search leads me to believe that will not be successful. Anyone have any experience with repairing/reheeling Born shoes?
I love wearing my oxfords with dresses. And cropped pants. 🙂
I think it’s a nice shoe, but I have had such bad luck with the fit of Everlane’s shoes. The modern loafer was so narrow, I couldn’t get my foot into it, even though I ordered up a half size. I also tried the slide sandal and it wasn’t too narrow, but the leather cut into my instep so that I couldn’t even walk across a room without pain. It’s too bad because they’re such nice shoes, but apparently, Everlane isn’t the greatest if you have wide feet or a high instep.
do they have sort of a gummy sole? rubber? i guess that would be hard to repair. but otherwise, i don’t know why you couldn’t get them repaired…a good shoe person can work miracles!
Depending on how the sole is attached, you might be able to have an entirely new sole attached. Find a good cobbler and ask questions!! (I know I wanted to have my favorite Dansko sandals re-soled but it wasn’t possible because of the shoe construction 🙁 So I’ve been using GearAid urethane shoe repair to try to keep the sole cracks from spreading….
I think they’d look great with the ES Florence pant – any wide cropped pant, skinny and boyfriend jeans, midi skirts, the pants you have on now, of course. I think you’d get a lot of mileage out of them if they’re comfortable.
I love oxfords/brogues and wear them a lot. I’ve been really looking forward to this shoe but I’m a little disappointed in the design. Too high up on the foot – I think I’d have trouble walking in them and the look is a little off to me (I’m being totally nit-picky here). Just a tiny bit lower would have made a big difference, I think. I also don’t love that it’s a two-eyelet design – combined with the height, it looks a bit desert boot-ish, especially in the brown shades.
That said I think it looks great on your foot, Grechen. And I like it on the women in the promo video. And once again, the price is right for an Italian-made shoe so they might win me over enough to order a pair. 😉
I’m not sure I will order these Oxfords as I have my eyes on some No 6 clogs at the moment (thanks to you, Grechen!) 😉
How are you liking the Everlane relaxed linen shirt? it looks great on you, btw. I just ordered one so I’m looking forward to getting lots of use of it as the weather cools.
I just wrote about Oxfords on my blog but seemed to have missed these! They are beautiful! How are they comfort wise?
They’re very comfortable! Need a little more breaking in though…
Hi Grechen,
How about styling the shoes with wide leg wool pants or wool trousers borrowed from the boys w a more feminine top, or one of James Perces’ fitted henleys.
Remember I’m going to the showroom on Thursday so I will be trying them on- I currently have a grey suede pair from Balenciaga that I love, and good old fashioned blk/white saddle shoes from the original, Bass. Maybe a pair in burgundy or what used to be called oxblood would be beautiful and useful .
I will put pics on instagram so you can see the showroom.
Best, Gena
Hi Grechen!
These look really great on you, and I like how you styled them here. How do they fit compared to the Modern Loafer, are they just as narrow? I think the oxfords look super cute, and I love all the colors they come in. I think I’d love to style them with a dress and tights in the winter.
BTW, photos look great here!
I would style them exactly the same way you did; I think they would look good with a knee length pencil skirt + sweater/cardigan a la garconne.
I am visiting my family in Poland and I was surprised to see the modern loafer for about 60$ – full price not even on sale. Hmmm …. there is something I don’t understand here.
thank you andrea!! i’m trying 🙂 thanks to you…
what’s your instagram gena, so i can follow you?
can’t wait to see your pictures and hear what you think!
Ah yes, but finding a good shoe person has been a challenge! 🙂
Is the sole leather, or is there some rubber added? If you live anywhere it might rain, that’s an added $25 to get top soles put on, which kind of sucks. My other worry with these Everlane oxfords is that they will make my 9.5 feet look enormous..
The black do look great, though. Glad they decided to go with the black sole!
I wear my Dieppa Restrepo oxfords with pencil skirts a lot.
they have rubber on the heel, but that’s it. i’m lucky, i just don’t wear them in the rain…and i can drive everywhere anyway…so, i never bother with adding soles.
i love the black on black! they do also have black w/natural, but i personally prefer black/black 🙂
I think that black/natural was just the test run (if you’re following the Everlane Studio Instagram, too), I don’t see them for sale!
I’m in a city so no way can I wear leather-soled shoes as-is. Oh well, will wait on these for a bit.
they were there yesterday…and gone now. maybe you’re right, or they sold out
I got mine delivered yesterday. I wanted to love them — they look so chic here on you and in the model pics — but the fit on me just wasn’t right. They hit me at an awkward place at the front of my ankle and that stiff leather tongue jabs right into my ankle every time I take a step. I had them on for only a few minutes and when I took them off I had angry red marks at the front of my ankles! For reference I have a wide forefoot (so I sized up a half size), high arch/instep, and narrow heel and ankles. I wear and love their modern loafer, which appears to have a similar last. I think it’s just that the Oxford is cut too high on the foot for me. They’re going back, sadly…
oh, man..sorry to hear that fern. that happened to me with the modern babo when i sized up – the shoe hit me in the ankle and was terrible! – sizing down helped, but this shoe is different in terms of fit. and oh, it has a back LOL
i think i’ll write them with feedback on how high up on the foot they come – i’d love it if they’d make next year’s version lower on the foot, it would be much better for many more people i think. oh, and you should do that too when you return them – make a note about it on your return…
Great idea. I’ll definitely include a note about the high cut when I send theme back… I’d buy them again in a heartbeat if they were just an inch lower in the front!
I received mine (in blush) over the weekend. They are really beautiful and comfortable, and I also wanted to love them, but they were just too pointy for me. I love my Everlane loafers and street shoes, but these just made me look like I had boat-feet. I ordered the Nisolo Oxfords instead, which I feel are a bit more forgiving and flattering for dresses and slim pants.
