Everlane Modern Babo slide/loafer (made in Italy) | size 7.5, I went down a half size : gift to review from Everlane
Kara midi tote bag
So excited to finally be able to share these with you now that they’re available online (if you waitlisted them..)! I’ve had these new Everlane slides for a week or so now, and have worn them about a handful of times. They are incredibly comfortable (no break in time!) and super easy to wear. Everlane first sent me my true size (8), which was much too big/long/weird AND actually cut into my ankle a bit, so I asked for a smaller size. The 7.5 is perfect on me, and even though they’re narrow, I didn’t have any problems at all with my toes feeling squished as I did to a small degree with the modern loafers.
The leather on these is softer and has more give than the loafers, and like I said, I wore these right out of the box with no problems at all. They arrive with the heel down (you walk on the heel, basically, like a traditional babouche), but you can wear the heel up like a shoe. I have never tried to do that, nor would I, honestly.
This is truly a great shoe: well-made, sophisticated, comfortable, and affordable. For me though, and my thicker calves, I generally prefer the more “open” style of my Emerson Fry slides though because showing more of my foot helps elongate my legs. Overall these are so chic, and they’re all the rage right now (ACNE studios has an identical style for a lot more $$$). AND these have much more support than a traditional style Moroccan babouche.
Hi! Would you mind trying them on with the heel up, just to see how the fit is? We have the same shoe size but I would need to wear the heel up if I bought these and wanted to wear them at work, so I’m curious to know whether they pinch/cut into your ankles, etc. Thanks so much — your reviews are always so thoughtful, and I really appreciate it!
Ditto on that request, I would have to wear the heel up as well!
I have to say, I just feel weird about a pair of shoes with a back that is meant to be worn squished down…it just doesn’t seem logical to me. Why have the back at all then? It seems like back of the shoe would get trashed from wearing as mules, and then when you wore them up, it wouldn’t look great?
Anyway, that’s me. I won’t be buying them. 😉
Have to agree…
ha. yes, i do agree. all i can say to that it is true to the “traditional” style of the moroccan babouche . and the idea that you could wear it both ways is appealing…i wouldn’t, but that’s mostly because it makes it more like a bootie on me, and i don’t want that. anyway, i’ll try it with the heel up like a “shoe” and see how it looks/feels.
but the moroccan babouche shoes are cheap, I can step on the back of the shoe all i want with no guilt 🙂
Haha. Yes. Very true 😉
I was going to make the same request for showing + talking about the shoe with the heel up!
Are you planning to review the slim cut t-shirt? Or did I miss it somewhere? Thanks!
Beautiful! I just ordered a couple more of their V necks – my favorite!
just until i can get a picture up (maybe on instagram) i tried them on with the heels up last night, and they’re comfortable. a little hard to get on that way, since there’s very little room at the ankle (it’s like a bootie that way), but once they’re on, the heel is NOT too snug IMO, and actually walking on it for a week has softened it up, so it doesn’t rub my heel at all…
I’ll have to ruminate on this one for awhile. (One doesn’t often get the chance to use “ruminate” in a sentence. ) 😉
Haha!! Good one 😉
I like these shoes a lot. The stepping on the heel part is what makes them so chic I think. And the fact that they are comfy is a huge plus! On another note, will that review of the everlane muscle tee be coming soon? Eager to hear about it, esp sizing as I always seem to get that wrong with everlane (can never decide between S/XS. Would also love a review of their traditional trench (not the swing trench but the other one)!
I think these shoes are divine! Actually, I am mostly in love with the idea of them. I love fashion that is versatile (even for my children’s clothes — I am a sucker for reversible tops and jackets). I would totally wear these both ways, but I am just not sure how they would fit into my wardrobe. My one concern is the stepping on the heel part… does that feel funny at all? Do you notice it like, oh yes, I can feel that I am stepping on the heels of my shoes? Anyway, like you, I live in a warmer climate (San Diego, CA), so I wouldn’t even consider buying these until closer to fall.
P.S. I love that Everlane sends you goods to review. I saw these shoes on the site today, and I was like, hmm, let me go see what Grechen has to say about them!!
Hi Grechen – I am a 7 in the modern loafer, a 6.5 in the street shoe (in the 7, my heel slipped when I tried them on at an Everlane event)…6.5 mostly across the board but sometimes a 7 if it’s stiff and narrow like the modern loafer.
Do you think I would be a 6 or a 6.5 in the Babo? Asking since you sized down from your normal shoe size. Thanks! 🙂
Amanda
so much pressure!! 🙂
i found the loafers in my true size to be just a bit snug, especially at the toes, and my street shoes were a 1/2 size up and they were too big.
SO. i recommend sizing down a half size from your TRUEST TRUE size, so maybe a 6? and since they’re a mule (if you wear them that way) there’s a little more wiggle room there. for me, the half size smaller fit perfectly, and even was never too snug at the toes. even if i do wear them with the heel up (which i haven’t, but i did try them that way) they’re still the right fit for me.
they are not as stiff as the modern loafer, for sure.
hope that helps!!
haha! honestly at first, i didn’t even think about the heel. then another time i put them on, i was like, oh, i’m stepping on the back of my shoe…but that didn’t last long. they’re quite soft and supple, so you really don’t even notice what you’re doing…
yeah, these won’t get a lot of wear for the summer because i just cannot STAND having my toes covered when it’s in the 80’s or 90’s outside. i wore them the other day in mid-80 degree weather and couldn’t get them off fast enough!!
i posted today about the muscle tee, but i think i should have sized down in that one to a small for myself – the medium is a bit long on me, but mostly, it’s just too big in the chest/armholes in the medium. if you have a smaller chest like i do, then i would recommend a smaller size.
ok, good! glad you don’t really notice it. thanks!!!
I hadn’t given these much thought, but they look great on you!
Nice shoes… Big love. Always been a fan of Moroccan Babouche!
I just discovered your blog. I’m a huge Everlane fan!
I recently had the experience of trying on some other babouche-inspired shoes that didn’t fit in my normal size because my arch sort of “caught” on the opening and didn’t let my foot slide all the way in to the toe. For that reason I sized up in the Babo, and I’m glad I did.
For reference, I wear an 8 in most of Everlane’s shoes–with the exception of the modern loafer and the original nubuck street shoe (8 1/2). I ordered an 8 1/2 in the Babo and while they fit, I can’t put the backs up. My foot measures 8 and is medium width but I have super high arches.
Something for the high arched ladies to consider.
excellent input, thank you Shanti!
