Everlane cross back dress (size 8)
Birkenstock Birko-flor sandals
As I mentioned, I ordered the new Everlane cross back dress to try, the blue in size 6 and the green in size 8. The 8 is my size; the size 6 was really snug at the waist which made it poof out a lot at the hips. It has a zip closure on one side to make it easier to get into, but I sort of wish it didn’t – I don’t think it’s necessary. That said, it is pretty unwieldy to put on.
I like the dress, and if it was black, I might work harder to make it fit. I would have to get the straps taken up at the shoulder to pull the dress up a bit, so the waist hits at my natural waist, and I would probably hem it shorter. Then, of course, I would STILL not be able to fill it out at the bust, which is very large on me. But I could probably live with that if the dress fit me better overall.
I didn’t like the dress enough to mess with it though, so I sent both of them back to Everlane.
Oh, and the no-bra thing doesn’t bother me at all, I’d wear some nipple coverage though, like these a reader mentioned in a comment a while ago. You also could absolutely wear a bra with this if you wanted to…
Did anyone else get this dress? or any other piece of Everlane’s new cotton poplin? What did you think??
Well, I LOVE that color on you and I actually think it looks really good! A few alterations would really make it perfect, but I like this different silhouette for you! Your pictures actually make me want to try it, too!
First, I love this color on you. With your light hair color, it’s very flattering. Second, the back looks fabulous. Sexy without being over the top. Very summery.
I find more misses than hits at Everlane. I keep wanting to love it and so many of the pieces fall short in one way or another. Its funny you mention getting into this dress because when I saw it on the site, the first thing that came to mind was how do you put it on? I live in the desert southwest and poplin really appeals to me. Haven’t found anything in the Everlane new releases that I want to order though.
Grechen, I really love that silhouette on you. It’s beautiful. But the fabric looks very plastic and shiny to me. I’m glad you sent it back. 🙂
thanks catherine 🙂 i like it too, just not enough to tinker with it enough to make it really fit me.
i think the fabric would look better if it was steamed – but i just threw it on really quickly when it arrived LOL
but yes, i would prefer if it looked a little more matte.
thank you so much!
the poplin is very comfortable, light and airy, but this dress is sort of tough to fit IMO – but as we’ve discussed before, and you mentioned, there’s always something just “off” with most of everlane’s pieces lately that make them not as great, or appealing as they would be with a few tweaks.
the color is really pretty though, i liked it better than the blue.
thanks julia! i like it, but not enough to do the tweaking necessary i guess. i just don’t have the energy for it lately LOL
This dress JUST fit me in the largest size. I liked the A line dress but I already have a similar navy dress. If they made the A line in this green I might have gotten it. Of course in the A line I would need to size down?!?! But the other one barely fit. Their sizing is so inconsistent.
I also ordered the navy poplin skirt. Both the XL and L were too large, and I just didn’t feel like exchanging for a M. Again–weird sizing! I need to just give up on Everlane. I have exactly one shirt from them that I have kept (the square striped poplin).
I got the clean cotton V-neck dress in green and loved it. The fabric is nice and lightweight and the color is gorgeous. It wrinkled a bit more easily than I would have liked, but I sit all day and suspect that others might have a better experience with that. It runs big, as usual with Everlane purchases. For reference, I wear an 8 in most dress designers, but ended up with a 6 here. I could have maybe sized down to a 4 because the armholes were still big, but didn’t think it was worth it for a pretty shapeless dress (which I am into).
I don’t get the generous chest plus the fact almost no bra would work with this. Maybe one of those stick on ones, or those weird backless ones, but definitely not normal everyday bras that I know of? I did think about getting the crop + skirt pairing, which would seem easier to size and you can also wear a normal bra with the crop top,
It looks great on you (you look fantastic in open back, which I unfortunately do not). However, I do feel this isn’t you. There seems to be a lot going on with the seaming etc and I think you prefer very clean lines with some draping at the most in terms of detail.
I haven’t bought anything from Everlane for a long time and rarely wear any pieces I bought previously (except my navy and black anorak hoodies – use those constantly). I will actually let go of my Petra tote soon (which I never thought I’d do). And I don’t think I’ll order any longer from them, it’s too much effort to get a good fit for me personally.
Excellent point…if one has a large bust, one requires a bra.
I think you know yourself and your style pretty well by now, and I agree: This is just “meh” in fit and fabric. When I compare it to your red Eileen Fisher or your JP’s…no contest! They win.
Just a hint from a sewer if someone loves this dress but it doesn’t fit everywhere: unlike most dresses, I would say fit it at the top and fiddle at the waist. At the elastic back of the waist. I think it would work better.
Hi Kathryn, I just got this dress (in the same colour!) myself and I’m intrigued by your comment. It fits fine everywhere except the waist, which is a little tight for me… how would you suggest the waist be altered though? Would welcome your suggestions! 🙂 Thank you!
