I know some of you guys have been waiting for this!! Here are the Elizabeth Suzann Clyde work pants on me, in size 6 regular. These are olive twill, 100% cotton. I have to be honest, I had to wear them around and look in the mirror a lot to get used to them on me, but I really love them. That being said, I don’t think I’m keeping them, mostly because I don’t see myself wearing them during summer, and I think after trying the olive, I’d rather have black eventually.
My thoughts:
The cotton is medium-weight, which is great for a “work” pant, but will be pretty hot in a couple weeks here in Texas. On me, the waist is rather high, as you can see, which I love, and the elastic is comfortable. The hardest thing for me to get used to on me was the pocket placement. The pockets are AMAZING, and just what I always want, but for me, and my saddlebags, they do tend to emphasize them a bit; I was always trying to smooth them out there and push them in as I tried the pants on.
I like the look of them best with a cropped shirt, or something tucked in, that shows my arms and waist a bit more, so styling them was a challenge, and made them a little more fussy for me than I like. But, wow, they are such great pants. Maybe they’re not perfect for me, or worth adding to my wardrobe right now, but I will absolutely keep them in mind for the fall/winter, and probably in black. I think they’d be ideal for travel, to warm or cool climates, because they’re so sturdy and casual, but interesting. They’re not your typical “cargo” pant!
And even though I’m about 5’3″, the regular length works well for me, I would even roll them up a bit to make them more casual, and to show a little ankle, so it’s nice to have that option.
Any questions? Does anyone have a pair of these yet? What do you think of them? Will you try them?
I think, as your fans convinced you with the navy florence pant, you should reconsider passing on this. I’m sure you have a ton of black pants already and, even if not, there will be plenty to tempt you in the fall. This, however, is a unique cargo, and looks great on you colourwise with your hair (can’t really see your eye colour!) I see you wearing your navy and grey tops with this. But you could also step out of your comfort zone with some soft fall colours. Just my perspective!
My comment is heavily influenced by my constant quest not to look like a middle aged mom even though I am one. I have utmost respect for the varied ideals and standards you hold yourself to, and I have been a reader {albeit slacker commenter} for many years. That being said, those pants scream “mom pants”, and for $200+ retail, are not worth it for the silhouette and vibe they convey. My comment has absolutely nothing to do with you, so don’t take it personally, because I do not even like them on the waif model on the website. 🙂
I ordered these (in Olive) at the very end of February soon after they came out and I’m still anxiously awaiting their arrival. Based on their recommendations I ordered the short length but I fear I’ll wish I’d ordered the regular.
You are making me what these pants more! I actually like that they emphasize the hips. It is basically an exaggeration of a natural silhouette and if you’re not into conforming to arbitrary beauty standards I think it can be really cool and arty. I also think curvy bigger women look better in skinny jeans for this same reason, it calls attention to the hourglass figure. I mean the body is just a form, why not play with clothes to emphasize or de-emphasize whatever you want. And nature graced us with so much variety in the female form! Clothing as artistic expression seems so natural! For me its all about wearing things that are interesting and unique. Alas, I have to save my pennies for these pants as I am on a buying freeze after taxes. Blech. These look great on you.
thanks kathryn 🙂 i agree with you, in theory, about the pants and the color. and i haven’t sent them back yet…
point taken juli 🙂
i do appreciate your thoughtful comment though!!
i think it will also depend on if you’re short or high-waisted, and how long your legs are…maybe the short will work for you?
i would have honestly been fine with the short length, i like them rolled up a little bit, but i do also like the option to leave them down…
thanks laura! i do agree with you, and always love playing with unconventional silhouettes, but my biggest “problem” area has always been my hips/saddlebags, and i’m just now getting “over” that, so i still have a hard time with shapes that emphasize them, you know? although i love to emphasize them in fitted dresses/skirts. go figure 😉
I would like to add that the silouette looks awesome on you. You look curvy in the best possible way and your figure looks very balanced and hourglassy. Hourglassy? Yes, it’s now a word. Now that I see you in it, I actually think it looks better on curvy gals than on slimmer ones. I, too, was not drawn to this piece when I saw it on the ElizabethSuzann website.
This comment is not about the pants as such, just that I have wasted days (weeks?) looking for work pants that look good on my mommy-of-three pooch AND are made in North America. I just found this site, so thank you! It’s fantastic!
From the first time I saw them, I’ve been so torn on these pants. On one hand, they look like they might solve a lot of wardrobe problems, and on the other, I feel like they’re not interesting enough or special enough to justify their cost. And I change my mind about them from photo to photo, depending on color, model, styling and even the angle of the shot. I love the way they look with the black top – the black and olive combo speaks to me and that top is insanely flattering. But for my money, the Florence pants are so much nicer. I have yet to put in an order for those because I’m still trying to decide on the size/length. And I know if I choose incorrectly, it’ll be weeks before I can try a different size.
I did finally receive the ES artist smock in black silk crepe and I totally love it. The fabric drapes so beautifully.
Those pants look terrible on the waif model! I like them much better on Grechen. 🙂
I really like them in the green , styled with the Zady tee. But, I’d probably go with black, too. How many pairs of olive pants does one person need? Whereas black is limitless! ( Well, not really, but…)
Honestly, dear Grechen, I DO NOT notice the saddlebags of which you speak. But you have to be comfortable in them. Since they are number sizes, do they go to a 12 or 14?
Since I’m on a Black Crane kick, and I know you’ve tried their pants, how do these compare to the BC “Carpenter Pant”?
i loved them, although i had the 100% cotton “flannel” version and they were just too hot to wear much. the linen looks appealing…
I don’t know why I am just now seeing this review. Have been drooling over the Clyde pants for at least a year, and I like the updated, sleeker look. They look REALLY good on you!
I am curious to know – what did you do with them?!? (And are they for sale? 😉
haha! no, i sent them back to ES 🙁
Ah, dang! Perhaps I’ll take the plunge in the fall…
You look terrific in these. As I’m similarly shaped and on the verge of pulling the trigger to buy a pair, I am curious as to the color fastness/fading of the pants now that you’ve had them for a while. Does the color fade? That would potentially be ok for the olive, but when black fades, it changes the look dramatically.
Thank you.
Hi Katrina! I actually sent them back :(. And I regret it so much!! So I can’t speak to the color fastness on these but maybe someone else can? I plan on buying these ASAP.
Good idea! They do look limitless, and are so flattering.
I’ve had these pants (in olive) since about June I think. I originally ordered the short length and sent them back for the regular. I’m only 5’3″ but I find the regular length more versatile. They are super comfortable and the pockets are amazing! I’ve washed mine a few times and noticed no fading yet.
I don’t have any other pieces in this fabric but I have many black ES pieces and none of them have faded. I am very careful to only wash in cold water and hang almost everything to dry.
thank you so much! That’s really good to know.
