WEARING
Mother denim skirt | mine is size 29, it sits low on my hips
Splendid white t-shirt | 1×1 style, similar at Shopbop, but with a scoop neck
Robert Clergerie Pepo sandals | I’ve been wearing these non-stop; I’ve become very happy with them 😉 (size up 1/2 size at least)
Dannijo necklace
Admonish custom leather tote
I tried on ALL of my clothes this weekend to see what I need to get rid of and wore this white t-shirt with everything. Which made me remember how wonderful a simple white t-shirt is. And then, I counted my white t-shirts: twenty. I have twenty white short-sleeved t-shirts, they’re different styles (v-neck, scoop-neck, crew-neck), but they’re all white. Is that too many? In my case, yes, although if pressed, I would say you can’t possibly have too many white t-shirts. A lot of mine though, are too big for me now, or just plain old. I don’t wear white t-shirts as often as I used to, but whenever I think of parting with any of them, I freeze, and can’t do it. I’ll wear them layered in the winter, or around the house, I can ALWAYS wear a white t-shirt, right?
As I was trying on all of my clothes, I realized, there’s nothing a great-fitting white t-shirt DOESN’T work with. Of course my wardrobe is pretty casual, but a crisp white tee with a black skirt or jeans is really flattering and clean/chic-looking. The key to the best look is that the tee fits PERFECTLY, and of course a statement-necklace and/or shoes doesn’t hurt to bring the look up a notch.
So, this week, I’m going to build outfits around my favorite white tees, hopefully without getting boring. In case you missed my “Essential white tees” post, take a look for my favorites, although I did not include any Splendid there. I don’t recommend the splendid very light jersey tops because they don’t hold up very well (get holes), but I DO LOVE any of the 1×1 tees (the one I’m wearing today is 1×1). Unfortunately, they’re harder to find now than the very light jersey, but I love the way they fit and hold up to wear/washing.
What’s your favorite white t-shirt? Do you wear them often? How do you “dress” them up?
I have two white tees (both from Target, a scoop and v-neck) and one has been relegated to the wear only around the house because of pit stains which is one of the reasons why I don’t like buying white tees/tops. They usually end up looking less than fresh and white after awhile. I find shopping for white tees a quest for finding the right one like jeans so the fact that you have twenty is impressive to me.
I don’t wear mine often because I have tons of other colored tees but the best way to dress them up is a blazer or a nicer pair of pants.
I’m really fond of the Eileen Fisher linen jersey tees. I especially love the shape, not clingy through the mid-section. They’re a bit less opaque than I’d like but that’s true of just about every white tee I’ve tried in the last 5 years. So a camisole underneath does the trick.
The one you’re wearing is a really nice fit, BTW. That’s another thing…being 5’1″, I have a hard time finding tees that are short enough.
It’s so funny, I always forget about my white tees too! I think of them just for layering, yet I always ooh and aah when I see other women put together a great outfit with a simple, classic white tee (or button-down). Here’s to remembering to embrace the classics!
(PS – love the necklace!)
thank you! i’ll admit, i’ve totally neglected my white tees so far this summer in favor of sleeveless tops or dresses, but i’m glad i’m re-discovering them – i forgot how much i love a good white tee 🙂
yes, i have this problem too. the splendid tees are very good for me, as are james perse. Everlane tends to be a bit longer, and lna is VERY long – good only for layering really.
all tees lately are SO SHEER!!! that’s why i love the splendid 1×1 tees – they’re a heavier knit and not sheer at all. Also, i’ve found that everlane is a bit more substantial, not quite a see-through. still have to try eileen fisher!
TWO WHITE TEES?? only two?? 😉
i have so many, none of them get worn enough to get stained….
