Ugh. Summer. But I guess it’s not “officially” summer yet is it? Feels like it here. And as soon as school is out in most of the country everything changes anyway. Most of all I can tell the change here on the blog; comments are always WAY down and I miss almost daily interaction with you guys. I thought I’d try and post more on Instagram, because there still seems to be quite a bit of interaction there, but it seems like too much work haha. Everything seems like a lot more work though now that it’s heading up towards 100 degrees every day…the heat really drains me.
Anyway, if you’re out there, pop in for a sec and say hi! 🙂
What are you doing this summer?
I have to push myself to get outside – my husband prefers to be outside and though I’ve been trying to train myself in the 20 years I’ve lived in NC, hot & humid & mosquitos just isn’t pleasant…. Wearing linen pants today because 1) I have to walk across campus for a training later today, and 2) I didn’t shave this morning. TMI? 😉 Saw a House Hunters Intl last night (sitges spain) and the woman had the most gorgeous long dresses. Not caftans, not wrap or maxi dresses. I have no clue what to call them but I WANT.
No big summer plans – trying to keep the garden alive and mostly weed free. Cherries are gone but blueberries coming in now. Trying to eat light, drink less wine, and move more. When I really *want* to sit down in front of a fan with a book and a glass of wine. So, you know. Happy summer 🙂 Or, not quite yet….
I love how you style the EF jeans! Also, I meant to comment on how fantastic you look in the JP dress yesterday. Wow. You know, it’s funny. I try to emulate your style a lot, but even if I’m wearing the same shoes and similar dress or styled outfit, there’s something about how cleanly everything drapes or sits on you that I just don’t think looks as good on me. Though we’re similar in height and weight (I think you’re way thinner than me now, though) you’re much more delicately built on top and you look sooo much better in tee shirts and other tops than I do. I am always trying to embrace my body type, and figure out what I love or don’t love on me. I’m proud of myself for not having added anything to my closet for most of winter and spring, and now I’m trying think about a new piece to purchase. You’ve been a constant inspiration to me way you work with your body and wear the things that are comfortable and organic to your style. Where did you get such strong vision and confidence. I guess we’re all a work in progress, but some more than others. I am continually grateful for your posts!!!!! Xoxox
Hi there! I feel you about the heat. We like to stay inside in our dark, cold little cave of a house during the summer and do nothing. But this summer I’m having a baby! I’m due at the end of July and really, really ready for it. And because of the heat, I don’t have a lot of things to wear with a big pregnant belly…it’s definitely harder to find clothes to accommodate a pregnant belly during summer than winter (during my last pregnancy I basically lived in leggings and oversized sweaters, so I rarely had to buy anything maternity specific). This time my options are really limited, and most of the maternity stuff out there is just NOT my style. However I did find an amazing Eileen Fisher tunic at a thrift store and it’s been fabulous!!!! I wear it all the time, and because it’s not a “maternity” piece, I can keep wearing it afterwards! And it convinced me that I need to buy more Eileen Fisher. 🙂
I was just on vacation in Virginia and I’m so happy to be back in Vermont. The heat was getting a bit out of control (especially for someone used to pretty low temperatures). I’m planning on taking it a bit easy this summer. I’m really involved in my community theater and it has dominated my last two summers, so I’m planning to step back a bit and focus on enjoying the longer days.
hey Grechen! I so wanted the EF jeans you have on but they are all out of my size, unfortunately. Oh well! I’m trying to not buy much either so maybe this is a good thing. It’s been a very warm week in LA but it’s going to cool off for the next few days which will be a blessing.
Oh, and the other news is I’m getting married in August 🙂 I ordered the ES Ella dress in ivory and this will be my wedding dress. It’s going to be a tiny ceremony in my backyard. We’ll probably have a celebration dinner w/family and friends in Sept, but it’ll be small. We are both in our 50’s and this is our 1st marriage for both of us. We’re total newbies at this!
correction, I just checked the link you gave us for the jeans and my size was there…so I ordered a pair! yay 🙂
Hello! I’m here! And I’m also no great fan of summer. I bought my first pair of Robert Clergerie shoes yesterday (these sandals, on sale at Totokaelo: bit.ly/2JGZNNW) after remembering how much you like his shoes. They’re very comfortable and I love them, so thank you for the recommendation! Was tempted by the coral slides too, also on sale.
I was pregnant during a hot, dry summer. The best thing I had was a borrowed linen slip dress. The second best thing was a pair of cropped maternity jeans from Target with tank tops or t-shirts. Hang tough!
I hear you on the heat. I wanted to wear jeans and a t-shirt today but my meeting schedule would not support that! I thought you looked great in the JP dress yesterday (I think I have that same one in dark blue stripes) and I can’t wait to hear how the new ones work out (I was tempted!).
love those sandals!!! i was looking at those in black for a while, but i’m wary of ankle straps…
that’s almost the best thing about RC shoes, they go on sale eventually and they end up being quite a steal, relatively speaking 🙂
so glad you like them!! the coral slides are beautiful too. i had a pair of those in black but sent them back because i wanted the platforms instead, but they were so comfortable, and cute.
i’m wearing a lot more pants/jeans than i usually do also because i am not shaving much….i just don’t have the patience!
i am SO JEALOUS that you have blueberries and cherries in your garden!!! that is my dream 🙂
I prefer November to March in Hawaii as it is sunny during the day with the perfect little chill at night. Now it is hot & humid. Not 100 degrees dry heat but a moderate temp that feels hotter due to humidity and lack of a breeze. So, it’s not too bad but I do prefer the weather we had about a month ago to now (unless I’m at the beach or poolside, than it doesn’t matter!).
Like this outfit on you and also the JP dress yesterday. Regarding the Shopbop sale, the only way I can resist is not to look at all. I also have a limit on my JP (3 dresses tops) but I don’t wear those dresses as much as you, it is purely a weekend or night dress for me. I have a harder time putting limits on my everyday work wear. Btw, I meant to tell you I eventually bought the JP tote in Medium in the grey color and absolutely love it. I use it a lot to lug my workout clothes, lunch bag and smaller purse to work. It definitely stands out as being something more than my other canvas totes, it’s worth it.
oh my gosh. i was JUST THINKING THE SAME THING today, about my body and if it was shaped differently (mostly, if i was taller, or at least had a longer inseam), things would look so much better on me. (what were you saying about vision and confidence?? ) i tried to shut it down pretty quickly, but it’s sort of always there just under the surface. you’d think after so many years dressing myself i’d understand that i’m not going to look the same as the “model” in the same clothes, but…
you are not alone, and i DO NOT have everything figured out 🙂
one day at a time!!!
I’ve been too lazy to shave much lately but I can’t be bothered to put on pants so….. dresses it is! I went to the dentist recently in a calf length dress and on the way there I noticed my very dark stubble and I know the dental assistant noticed it too because she complimented my very boring neutral birkenstocks, I’m sure to cover for staring at my legs bahahahaaaaaaa
I love your posts…I look for them at breakfast and usually read that email first. I can’t really buy anything as I am in Australia and it is just too expensive and difficult with sizing, but I find you inspiring. You seem very centred and I love your style choices. You would fit in very well in Australia (we are a pretty straightforward, unfussy lot I think!) whereas I get the impression that you don’t feel your look suits the aesthetic of where you live. I would love it if you would do a post about what the more usual look is in your part of the world.
Keep on keeping on!
oh! so glad you love your JP tote. i think it’s so great, and pretty perfect for me – for what i need. i will say i wish i’d bought a darker color though, the light grey gets really dingy, and is still , even after washing (although it says only to “spot clean”). i am super-tempted by the new loma slouchy tote (I saw it in person and it is SO good), but i’m put off by the fact it doesn’t have an inside pocket at all. although that really isn’t an issue with an organizer insert in it…
Another vote for summer not being a favorite! And living in Minnesota that is a blasphemous statement. This weekend I hear it’s going to be 90 and humid, which probably sounds like relief to you, but sounds ugh to me. I see lots of linen and half frozen water bottles in my future!
I have never understood how some people just love the heat and the sun! I like the sun, but I don’t ever want to be in the sunshine. It’s 95 degrees here and I am staying in my air conditioned house. The only good thing is being able to go out after the sun has gone down with my glass of wine and the air is still nice and warm. It will not cool off again until late October/November which makes me very sad.
thank you holly! i am desperate to visit australia & new zealand. hopefully soon 🙂
you’re right, i don’t feel that my look fits in very well here (in dallas/Texas). we live just outside the city where it’s all yoga pants or nike shorts all the time. then in dallas, it’s BLING BLING, skinny jeans, super-high end designer bags, etc., etc. there’s not much in between. Seems like there’s no room for “elevated casual” which I just made up and might be how i’d describe my style LOL. i mean, i basically wear t-shirts and jeans a lot of the time, or a simple dress, but i try to put some thought into the items i choose and wear things that are just a little out of the ordinary. if that makes sense.
thank you again for your comment! I love that you guys are all chiming in today 🙂
i like the sun in the winter time because that’s the only way i can stay warm LOL.
sun and heat is brutal, and honestly if i’m out in it for very long, it makes me nauseaus
it does get “nice” here after about 8 so i’ll walk dagny then, but that’s too late for me to sit outside and have a glass of wine haha…i try to finish my wine a few hours before bedtime, which is around 9!! oy.
actually right now it’s not too humid here, which is nice. i’ll take dry heat over wet heat any day – humidity makes the air so heavy and suffocating….
This summer I am working, working, and more working! My business is growing and evolving (which is AWESOME), so I’m in front of the computer a lot. I’m also starting to get back into working out, so I have that going on. And last, I am continuing to work on my health, inside and out. Lots of work, but good work. Exciting work!
Also, reading lots of blogs and shopping because my body keeps shrinking and I constantly need new underwear.
yay cathy!!!!! i’m so excited for you, for everything 🙂
and yeah on needing new underwear. that’s SO FRUSTRATING. i’ve had to buy some new lately because some are just way too big. but i loved them, and i hate buying new underwear!
Hi Grechen! Thanks for your post yesterday about Shopbop’s sale. I was able to score my wedding shoes 60% off what I was originally going to buy them for. Hope your JP dresses turn out great.
oh yay!! what shoes??

Hi Grechen!
It’s winter here – I drive to work in the dark, I drive home in the dark. I actually can’t remember the last time I saw the sun (we’ve had at least a week of rain).
It’s also year-end at work (June 30) so I have a shit-tonne of reports to get written so I’m head down.
Am off to Europe in August for 3 weeks and I am counting the days!
Oh yes, I do have the darker grey (asphalt), I tend to like charcoal colors anyways so will always gravitate toward those darker shades. I can see how the light grey could get dirty. I initially wanted the size you have but I ended up having a real need for the large (?). I can also tuck the sides in for a different look (kind of like the Louis Vuitton Neverfull bags tuck in the side). The Loma is so cute! I also like the new hemp pieces, particularly the striped ones. They have great bags.
This heat is brutal – the heat index here today is 102°F! I never understood the ads for grills and fire pits in the summer – who wants to stand outside by a hot grill when the temps are near triple-digits? Winter is grilling season in Florida!
We thought we were going to spend our summer moving. The housing market is insane right now, and our landlords decided to list their property. Thankfully (for us) it didn’t work out with the buyers, so for now we get to stay and plan an early-fall trip to Europe!
Grechen, you always look great! Relaxed and stylish and always yourself. I’ve been eyeing the EF pants for some time and have decided it’s finally time to buy them! Are you wearing petite or regular? I’m wondering about pants length—I am short but have long legs for my height and the length you are wearing is perfect. Thank you for creating this blog and community—it truly is one of my favorites and I check in every day!
I am wearing the regular length, EF petites never fit me right, so i generally have to size down in regular sizes…
my inseam is about 26″ so these are a good length for me, but might be more cropped on you?
and thank you so much 🙂
Thanks for your quick reply! They might be a bit cropped on me but that would be ok. But alas they are sold out of the 4 regular which I think would be my size. I think 6P would be too cropped. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that someone returns a 4 regular. Worst comes to worst, I don’t end up getting them. It’s not as if I really need them. 🙂
Awww, thank you, friend!! And I’m glad someone understands my pain about the underwear. I feel like it’s a waste of good shopping budget.
Wow – those temperatures are really insane (for June!). Living on the West Coast of Canada, we are enjoying mostly-sunny days with moderate temperatures – will get hotter this week and still nothing like 100! Summer is beautiful here – when I see all those dark red spots on the evening weather news, I feel really, really fortunate – especially because we have a lovely house at the beach. My skin loves it, too (I always notice how much more wrinkled people look when I visit in-laws in southern California – there’s something to be said for living in a rain forest!)
Summer plans – some travelling, some knitting, some reading, a wine tour – and lots of relaxing.
