Splendid maxi skirt with side slit | I’m wearing a large
James Perse exclusive Birkenstock sandals
Alexander Wang Rockie duffel
Margot Wolf necklace
I mentioned in my weekly recap post that I got this Splendid skirt when it went on sale last week at Shopbop (with my credit). And that my first inclination was to send it back; I packaged it up and labeled it and everything. But the more I thought about it, the more I knew I should keep it.
I’d been looking for a long, straight skirt all summer and never found one. I tried this one on a few times in the store, but wasn’t willing to buy it full-price, and I never quite fell in love with it (it’s long, and even the large still clings to my hips). But since I have credit at Shopbop, and it went on sale for $52, I decided to order it and try it at home to see if I could make it work (it’s sold out at Shopbop now, available at Nordstrom).
Needless to say, I decided to keep it. I wore it all weekend with a tank top and open cardigan on top. It’s still way too hot for that, but since I was mostly going from the car into restaurants, etc., where I knew I would be cold, I was generally comfortable. The skirt works best when I’m wearing something fitted like a tank and a cardigan on top – to show that I do have a waist – but I also wanted to try it with something flowy on top, like my Everlane Ryan tee.
I don’t wear my Ryan tee nearly as much as my tanks, and that’s mainly because it fits so strangely on me. It falls off my shoulders all the time (it’s a medium), which leads me to wear a strapless bra with it, so at least I don’t have to worry about my bra straps showing (which I hate). The tee is also smaller as it falls to my hips so it sometimes gets stuck there. I love how the ryan tee feels though, so I wear it mostly to and from Pure Barre and/or at home…
I do love the skirt, and find it to be very comfortable to wear – it’s actually almost like wearing shorts, except not, because all of my legs aren’t exposed every second – which sort of mortifies me. I’ll wear it a lot as the weather cools down with my longer cardigans and tank tops, and now with t-shirts and my Everlane Ryan tanks (my silk tank looks nice with it also…).
And now that I have this Splendid skirt (and the James Perse skirt I got via eBay that I won’t be able to wear until we get out of the 90’s/100’s), I’m going to be swapping out/getting rid of the only other long black skirts I have: a James Perse one that flares out at the bottom that I never really liked very much, and my Splendid foldover skirt (I haven’t worn it in quite some time). I know now that I prefer long straight, or slightly tapered/fitted skirts on my body as opposed to skirts that flare or widen at the hem. Not that I’m looking for any more black skirts or dresses, because I’m not, but at least with these trials and errors I finally understand and accept the shape I like the best.
Oh yeah. I’m also over the world’s smallest pony tail. I was waiting to get my hair cut until the weather cooled off a bit, because all I’m doing is pulling it back constantly, but I’m tired of it. I’m also pulling it back constantly because it’s too long…so why not just get it cut? I’m not talking pixie cut or anything again, just up to right above my shoulders, as it was in July. But then again…maybe it’s time to grow it out even more? Just to see? I’m sort of obsessed with this Emerson Fry model’s hair…Ugh. Why must hair decisions plague me so???
Love the new skirt! We’re finally getting our summer here this week too, so no long skirts or pants if I can help it. Having similar hair issues, though mine is longer than yours – it’s been so flat & shapeless, I want to cut it. But with travel coming up Sept through Dec, I know that having it longer is better so I can put it in a ponytail or french twist for work stuff. Grr. So I went with a new color instead (I do at home) – dark blonde instead of light brown. Just enough of a difference to appease my need for change for a while….
why does hair have to be so difficult?? i have always been one to want to change every couple of months though – obviously…if you look back through my different hairstyles over the years! – so i’ve never wanted to keep one look for very long. but sometimes i admire those women who can stick with a look for years…it must be so refreshing to have found “the look” and want to keep it. but the thing is, i like lots of different looks…
i’m tempted just to keep growing it, but i hate just pulling it back all the time, which is what i do to get it off my neck for running outside and for pure barre.
and yes, color is a great way to get change without cutting. i’m thinking of going darker soon also. it’s been a while. although i do love the blonde. GAH!!! so hard!!! π
I’m doing much the same with my hair .. I sort of twist it up and secure with a claw clip just to get it off the back of my neck due to the hot weather. I was toying with the Michelle Williams (Luis Vuitton ads) pixie cut, but ugh, I’m not sure I’d look all that great with short hair now that I’m older.
Monica.
Oh, I’ve been wondering about Everlane… how does the quality of the jersey feel? is it as soft as luxury tees? I’ve recently found Marine Layer, and love them… but at 3/$90 and only one style I like it’s hard to justify buying sometimes.
Also, I’m thinking about getting that Everlane swing trench when it comes in next week!
I’m the same exact way about changing up my “do.” My poor hairstylist probably thinks she’s dealing with a split personality! I ALWAYS have new pictures to tweak it a bit from month to month. But for the most part, I’ve had some variation on a bob for the past decade, probably. I found a stylist I adore who knew how to handle my very dense hair and she made me love it! But since we moved, I’ve been struggling to find someone who’s not afraid to get in there and CHOP!!!
I think, unless you’re really certain about what you want, make some small changes that you won’t regret.
I love the skirt! Maxis have been my salvation this summer. (Meaning: I don’t have to shave my legs!) π
Yes… it’s all about fall now! Particularly, I don’t like to wear gray, but I guess it looks good on you. I don’t know… it’s my skin tone, I guess. Take care!
Patricia
if you have any natural wave/texture to your hair, i would say go for the pixie!! i have super-straight hair, which is not ideal for such a short cut, but if i had some wave/body of any kind, i would have liked it much better, and may still have it today! if you’ve never done it…i recommend trying it at least once. it’s only hair π
and what’s age got to do with it??
short answer – no, it’s not as soft as more expensive tees, but it is more “substantial” so it seems to hold up better in general – as long as you don’t dry them.
i have the trench – it would be really perfect for your weather in SF. not so much here…but i thought it would be good for traveling..
my stylists have always loved that i want something different nearly every time – but i feel like at this point i may have tried it all! maybe i want to settle on something for a while? hmmm…
i hate having to find new service providers. stylists especially. i found one that i love, problem is she’s expensive !! but i think for now, i’m going to keep growing it out. it’s been a while since it was long, and even when i did have it long, i had bangs, which is a completely different look…
You’re so right! I found a guy I love out here, but it’s $150 for a stinkin’ haircut! Let’s see, does my family really need to eat this week?… So I settled for “technically perfect” but without nuance. Still not happy. But trying to work toward what I need.
Monica, I zipped over to your blog (which I would read on a regular basis if I weren’t a “watermelon-shaped woman”), and I think a pixie cut would be adorable on you! You’ve got a perfect shaped head for it, plus defined features, i.e. Great eyes and lips. Have you ever gone short before? There are so many great cuts out there now. The Michelle Williams, Julianne Hough, and Kaley Kuoco pixie style would be GREAT on you!
you’re better than i am!! i have a really hard time “settling” when it comes to my hair…i’ve had so many bad cuts (not lately) that i’m so scared to go to anyone who’s not highly recommended. and of course, the more expensive they are, the better they MUST be, right? i’m kidding…sort of…
Cool! Good to know. I used to buy JCrew tee shirts, but I find they aren’t that good. Like, I like how my Target tees held up better.
Three more days until they get that trench back in stock!
Really? I like my J Crew vintage Tees. They have held up well and I’m not even all that careful about not drying them. Different strokes… π
You’re right; this skirt is an excellent alternative to shorts! I’d never thought of that. I’m always trying to avoid wearing shorts because of leather or fake leather seating at work or in cars.
yes! and i don’t like to show that much of my leg, really. and you really don’t with this skirt, but it’s still breezy enough to let the air flow LOL
