In the comments of my Minimal Closet : What Not to Buy post yesterday, Henny mentioned that sheer items are on her list of “must not buy.” And the more I thought about that, the more I thought I should add them to my list too.
I got this James Perse top during the July sale, and have worn it a few times, but as much as I like to layer, I don’t like to HAVE to layer, if that makes sense…I want to be able to just throw this on with jeans and go, but I can’t. I find it works best over dresses, which is how I’ve worn it when I have worn it – no-brainer layering – but I can’t just wear it with a bra, it requires a cami underneath.
But then I also have two Helmut Lang tank tops I got for about $30 each (which is a deal for HL) during their sale last year that are VERY sheer, and that I haven’t worn as much as I’d have liked. I would have purged them, but I may wear them layered this fall/winter because they’re longer in the back and good for leggings. If I don’t, out they go. But still…I shouldn’t have bought them. Sale goggles. Happens to the best of us 😉
So, I thought why not just combine the two sheer pieces? And here you have it.
Happy Friday!!!
Love your creativitiy with combining the sheer tops, Grechen! you look so cool and chic. I am oogling those sandals u r wearing too. Anyways, i totally get what you mean about not wanting to HAVE to wear a camisole or something extra underneath something sheer. I’m right there with you.
You know, that skirt i mentioned yesterday is still hanging in my closet. It’s a really pretty white eyelet design. I can’t seem to purge it yet! I think the last time i wore it was two years ago and instead of wearing a slip underneath, I tied a sweater around my waist (!) OMG, i need to get rid of it…!!
I love this look. It’s effortlessly chic. But I’m with you on the sheer stuff. I won’t buy anything so sheer that it requires additional garments.

I’m not a fan of layering although .. in my closet are tops that need a cami underneath (sigh). It always looks so nice in catalogs, but to me .. it’s confining. Plus, cami’s are often too fitted and I feel like a stuffed sausage.

Agree that sheer can be very tricky, especially if you’re trying to maintain a minimalist closet. I have, however, been getting a lot of use of several sheer pieces in my closet by pairing them with a bandeau. It’s great because I don’t feel like I have to wear two shirts, and I also don’t feel like I’m unintentionally showing my bra!
Nice save!
And that outfit looks very Gretchen to me. 🙂
That looks wonderful.

I totally agree! I hate layering with tank tops because it is so hot in Texas. My idea of a layer is adding a cardigan in the winter. I don’t even need a coat unless it’s really frigid.
Eureka! That’s it EXACTLY, Monica! I hate that feeling.
Layering is a mainstay here in “Farhampton.” (HIMYM fans will know what I mean!). It can be hot during the day and freezing at night. Or you end up on the beach by a campfire, so the look calls for casual. (Purge list: get rid of silk) 🙂
I love this outfit on you, Grechen! Every detail is great.
thanks val 🙂
i’ve always wondered why you would need a sweater for the beach…but i’m used to florida and texas beaches. and it never cools down enough at night to need a layer LOL
that is one thing i love about texas – not needing a coat. i’d rather wear a big chunky sweater or cardigan 😉
thanks lisa!
it is…i should wear it more often! thanks amy!
the sandals are so good 🙂
you know…the sweater-tied-around-your-waist thing is back (90’s grunge throwback) – maybe you can make it work?? 😉
just kidding…it’s probably time to let go of the skirt !!
