FYI, I don’t think I’m starting to show (I’m 10.5 weeks) but maybe, just a little? Mostly I think it’s my sweater bunched up under the jumpsuit LOL. That, and I just can’t hold it in anymore.
So, for several months now I haven’t been using a serum on my face. I did use Kypris’ Antioxidant dew and repurchased it a couple of times, but ran out and didn’t buy more, and couldn’t really tell if I missed it. I do think it brightened my face up a bit and made it more “glow-y,” but I’m not sure if it’s enough to add back in again?
I don’t know. As I’ve mentioned before, all I really want from my skincare routine is for my face to feel hydrated, smooth and supple. I don’t really care much about my mild discoloration and a little splotchiness. I mean, I do, but not really? Not enough to spend too much money and time trying to find the ultimate solution. As if there is one.
I’m so tired of all the skincare marketing and this is the best, no, this is the best! And you must do masks, and use a serum, and an eye cream, plus this and that, or WHATEVER THE FUCK. Ugh.
I have definitely succumb over the years to the hype, and really love to browse and collect beauty products, but I just don’t want to spend my money on things that don’t ABSOLUTELY work for me.
Now, I use just a few products on my skin:
I cleanse in the morning with Lush bar soap, then apply Josh Rosebrook hydrating accelerator and Fat & the Moon’s All cream right after. If I wear any makeup I use Kjaer Weiss. Lately I’ve not been wearing sunscreen. GASP. I know that’s blasphemy in some circles but I don’t necessarily agree. And sure, it’s not exactly known for hard-hitting journalism, but Outside magazine published a great piece on sunscreen/Vitamin D/Etc. that was eye opening. And makes a great deal of sense to me. (I have always been of the opinion that I should aim to get my nutrients/vitamins/minerals from food + now sunshine).
At night, I use either Indie Lee’s brightening cleanser or Josh Rosebrook’s oil cleanser to wash off makeup, etc., then spray again with JR Hydrating accelerator and follow with either Indie Lee squalane oil or more Fat & the Moon cream.
I have noticed lately (pregnancy?) that my face is much drier than any of my moisturizers can seem to handle – the rest of my skin too. So I might try something else. I used to use argan oil and thought it was great for my skin in the winter, maybe it’s worth trying again? And I slather my body with almond oil right out of the shower, but later in the day it gets itchy again. Any good recommendations for a “clean” body oil/moisturizer?
I don’t believe it’s all hype – I do think there are products out there that work for some people. For a lot of people. I just haven’t found my miracle products yet, and am not sure I want to spend a lot more of my time or money trying to find them?
By all means, do whatever works for you! I’m a person that LOVES skincare and makeup (albeit very minimal, natural looking makeup)…enough that it was my profession. If there’s buzz about a product, I’m on it! I’ve heard great stuff about Josh Rosebrook Hydrating Accelerator. I’m not really sure what it does, but he’s purportedly one of the most ethical skincare gurus out there.
I’m a big believer in scientifically proven results. Sunscreen prevents cancer…let alone, wrinkles. With your fair skin and the TX sun, I’d be cautious.
P.S. Indie Lee makes a good “clean” body oil.
i wish i could buy more beauty/skincare products and try them! i do enjoy it…just not enough to prioritize i guess? i will just satisfy myself with browsing for now.
yes, sunscreen can prevent some skin cancer but according to this new study, there’s a tradeoff, and that is higher blood pressure, etc., and the diseases that accompany that. just food for thought/more study…
You look beautiful, Grechen, and I hope you are feeling well overall. I agree with you about beauty products and I loved trying every new “natural” product in the past. Honestly, if I was on a deserted island, I’d want basic Cetaphil lotion with me. I prefer the one designed for people with eczema, and use it as a body moisturizer and a morning face moisturizer. It helps with dryness and also redness I sometimes get with rosacea. My skin got a little weird when I was pregnant, but it looked really fresh and glowy once my son came, even though I was sleep deprived. 🙂
Ugh.. I had been very minimal in my skincare for the past few years but in November I read about Tulura and decided to try it. There a peptide serum and a cool or warm weather facial oil. They also make a facial cleansing oil. I’ve been pretty happy with them but will have to consider if the price is worth it when I run out.
I go back and forth on the sunscreen issue. On a daily basis it seems!
I don’t know that brand. Pricing looks relatively reasonable…I’ll be interested if you re-buy!
They key to skin is layering! You need to use a humectant to add in moisture, hyaluronic acid is de jouer right now (and putting your first product on damp dkin), an emollient to kind of fill it in (an oil wil work here), and an occlusive to seal it in (vaseline typically there are lots of petroleum free occlusives and shea butter could work too).
“and am not sure I want to spend a lot more of my time or money trying to find them?”
That’s how I feel about most things about myself…acne scarring, gray hairs, tummy pouch… 🙂
I hate wearing sunscreen, and my skin is so sensitive that it’s hard to find a sunscreen that’s compatible with it, especially for my face. This is one reason I stopped wearing any kind of face makeup – 99% of them contain sunscreen. It always makes my face feel so greasy, cakey, gritty, and weighed down. So I just don’t wear it most of the time, because I work indoors, and I don’t go out a lot. I will wear it if I’m going to be swimming or at the beach, but usually just on my body…for my face, I’ll go with a hat or something to shade it.
Really love this talk on face treatments, as I have been through three million products and finally have a winning combo. I have tried all the natural things, here are the three top:
Clarity by Good Medicine
Vitality Elixir by Mahalo (wow- worth every penny!!)
Plain old gooey Lanolin- as taught to me by my farmworkers:
take the pure lanolin (looks like axle grease) rub briskly in palms to warm/melt. smash it into skin then wipe off excess briskly with a towel. Skin feels amazing!!
Also agree about getting good old sunshine!! Just remember when pregnant you can (at least some of us) get melasma….a dark pigment splotch that happens when with child……..but sun is a good thing. I also want my vitamins from the sun. Its the best and makes you feel so good!
Love the chair! Perfect with the plant and everything is still neutral for photos so you and your clothing can shine.
I’m so minimal with personal. I did baking soda and vinegar for hair and since I went back to normal (no-sulfate) s&c in mid-2017, my back and shoulders are breaking out again. A lot. And my face, too. I’m thinking about going back – the hair’s a bit more complicated, but I _hate_ the breakouts.
I use Dr. Bronners for soap. I like Honest heavy moisturizer for my face in the dryer months.
I was showing early with my twins, and as a result, with my rapid-fire third, too. Maternity pants are wonderful. x
Oh my gosh, when I was pregnant this summer, my skin was insanely dry. We were in Berlin for months 7-9 of my pregnancy and the ONLY thing that kept my skin from not flaking away was just the drugstore Nivea lotion they have over there, but it’s different than the kind they have here.. Anyway, I thought I was aging overnight because I could see all my wrinkles getting worse every day. But as soon as I got back to the US and gave birth, my skin looked great again! Hormones! Also in both my pregnancies my hair got INSANE in the 3rd trimester, never needing to be washed. It was amazing, I could go a week and my hair felt like first-day hair. Also did not last, heh.
I like Tarte’s Maracuja oil for face but it’s overpriced and it’s probably not ethically made, I mean Tarte is cruelty-free but I don’t think their parent company is…but it’s been my favorite for a few years after I got a sample from a mail-order service. I just finished a bottle of Josie Maran’s Argan oil, and it was okay, nothing amazing.
For face, may I recommend Dormer 211 (Canadian brand) in either lotion or cream form. I personally prefer the lotion, as it is milky in consistency and absorbs beautifully. Also, you can add more during the day, if needed. You should be able to find this easily in the US, I think.
Wishing you well always…….a
Ha! I didn’t even notice the chair and plant! Looks good, but that goes to show you I’m only paying attention to you and your outfit. 😉
I really like Occitane Immortelle precious cream. It is pricey perhaps but it is all I use in winter New England and The Ordinary Rose Seed Oil sometimes at night. I tried a lot of stuff and just simplified to this routine. I use RMS makeup simple and the uncover 33 fits perfectly my middle-eastern skin while usually everything is off color. I understand RMS ‘s cult following.
First, I love your teal jumpsuit – great color on you!
2nd, I really have issues with that article. I fully buy that wearing sunscreen has been overhyped, especially by the cosmetic industry, but the article does not really do a good job of collecting existing research. The links felt very cherry-picked, and in some cases the links are to news articles that summarize the scientific research, not the research itself. Reading it just felt very much like the author was trying to force a point that might actually be more nuanced.
