Admonish custom leather bag
Candace Ang necklace | n/a
Obviously I need to add another piece to the “Things I’ll never wear, and then did” post, because who would have thought I’d EVER wear a romper? Certainly not me. But I couldn’t resist when I tried this on at Anthropologie. I’d been looking at it online, and the reviews were all good, so I got it, thinking how great it would be for warm weather, but also how easy to layer when it’s cooler.
Overall, I’m completely in love with the Darby Ikat romper, but it definitely has it’s issues, not least of which is bathroom breaks. It’s not a big deal if you’re not wearing a shirt or blazer over the romper, but while on vacation I wore this with a James Perse slub shirt over it and tied at the waist, and wow, what a PITA. Totally worth it though. The romper is so comfortable, cute (I think), and cool for summer, I’m willing to deal with undressing to go to the bathroom.
Also, the cuffs at the bottom are less than ideal. I guess if I ironed (assuming rayon can be ironed?), they’d stay up better, but I think they’re just destined to look “messy” generally; they are buttoned up on the sides, but the fabric is such that the front/back cuffs don’t stay “even”. Especially after I washed – did not dry – it.
Keeping in mind those slight “issues”, I’d still recommend this romper for playtime during the summer. I’ll wear it when it’s 105 just like this, and when it’s 65 with a blazer or cardigan on top. Maybe it’s a little bit weird – my sister told me I looked like I stepped out of the 90’s, my mom said she wore stuff like this all the time in the 70’s, and my husband told me I just needed a pitchfork and I was ready for farming. But you know how I like to push the boundaries slightly when it comes to my wardrobe, so here I am…pushing!
What are your thoughts on rompers? Would you wear one?
Oh, and as you see, I got my HG sandals, the Robert Clergerie Pepo sandals, and while I love them as much as I thought I would, they don’t exactly fit like a glove right out of the box. They might be even a 1/2 size too small, although I did size up a 1/2 size as recommended. The footbed isn’t small, but perhaps the straps are. They were final sale since they were so heavily discounted at La Garconne, so I can’t return them. I probably wouldn’t return them anyway, but I was looking forward to these being the sandals I’d wear all the time forever and ever, and right now, I’m not sure they will be. I think they’ll wear in and I am figuring out ways to deal with my heel slipping up in the back, and the strap being a teeny bit tight, so maybe they will end up being the perfect sandal, but I can’t say I’m not a little bit disappointed. Which is why I like being able to try on things like this before I buy, or at least have the option to return them. But then I don’t get the deal I want…I would have had to pay a lot more at Zappos for that privilege. Sigh.
Has that ever happened to you with a final sale item you’d been waiting so long for? What did you do about it?
If I really wanted them and got a deal… I suffer for fashion 🙂
Currently going through this with my new Campers (shocking to me because my others were so comfortable right out of the box!).
i did that with my Loubs – and unfortunatly they weren’t on sale either – i tried SO many on in the store – got the pair i wanted – and then when i went to wear them i could barly get my foot in them! – by that time it was too late to exchange/return – BUMMER right?! … i also find NONE of my shoes (sneakers, flats, heels, boots) are never comfy out of the box, they all give me blisters the first few times till i wear them in
I usually just suffer on and live with it when that happens. Being an Irish Catholic helps. FAB romper. I’m hoping I’ll find one on a Zara sale rail.
I believe I said “the 80’s”.. 🙂
lol. i thought you said the 90’s 😉
the more i’m wearing them, the better they feel…so not suffering too much!
zara has some great jumpsuits right now, but not on sale…
i guess i’ve been lucky with most of my shoe purchases and most of them fit very well right off, if not, they usually break in quickly. i’m hoping these do too…i’ve only ever had one pair of shoes i couldn’t wear at all…sorry about your loubs!! that sucks!
yeah, i saw that you had issues with your new campers, sorry. weird, because mine were also insanely comfortable right out of the box.
I found a super cute romper at Bebe, which I never even go into but I was bored one day and thought why not? Its soft and loose and cut out on the back so I can dress it up or down. I love it, I call it my onesie hahah.
While I wouldn’t wear a romper (It’s the whole “mutton dressed as lamb” thing for me at almost, but not quite, 53…Have to wait til Thursday for that!), I just got a really cute denim one for my daughter and she loves it. I think that yours is really cute on you, and still “adult” looking, if you know what I mean. Probably the pattern has something to do with it, plus it’s not “cutesy” like some of them (My daughter’s has a drawstring at the top and a cinched elastic waist, in chambray.).
I think shoes are probably the thing that is most disappointing for me. I have such problems with my boat-wide feet, my high instep, my 10.5 size, and the pain of surgery. If I could walk around all day in slippers and get away with it, I would! 😉
Oh, and now that I think of it, my J Crew “Perfect” shirts have been a disappointment in the fit department. I wish they’d quit messing with the fit when it’s right! (WOW! I just re-read that and realized what a self-centered comment that was! But I still stand by it…)
I think I return 30% of my purchases, and this is why I love shopping at Anthro and Nordstrom.
But last week I ordered these clog sandals and when they arrived I wasn’t sure I loved them (even though I tried them on in Brooklyn). They are neon coral with tan and gold straps, gorgeous. But now I am not sure I’ll where them! http://www.loefflerrandall.com/LRProduct.aspx?ProductID=699&CategoryID=0
I can return them for the silver, but they are final sale (I can’t get $ back).
That romper looks so cute on you!! They’re not all great but I do love a good one, and this one is perfect on you.
thank you!
Love those LR clogs!! I’ve wanted those forever. I do tend to return a lot of items also, but more when I shop offline than online. I make more impulse purchases offline…
Haha! I agree with you, I hate it when designers mess with a good thing. Good for me anyway…
The shoes look awesome, however. And if they are too small to start, they can stretch. Whereas too big, as I tend to do, are hopeless for anything except giving them to my daughter:).
