This is what I’d like to wear every single day for the rest of my life. Ok. So I exaggerate a little bit, I’d change it up every so often, and for summer, I wear dresses, but otherwise, I love this uniform. And I know I keep going on and on and on about Everlane, but truly, their sweatshirts are fabulous. I love that they’re a bit slimmer fit in the arms (which does make them harder to push up), and just a little slouchy. The one I’m wearing today is the “stone” color. A bit too similar to “mauve” which I already have, but that just means I’ll have to get ANOTHER one π The “mustard” might be fun.
And I’m basically dying for these jeans. THE MOST COMFORTABLE jeans ever. And they’re just a little slouchy, while the legs are skinny, so I think they work better on me than the traditional “boyfriend” style. The color is awesome, and I love the distressing (I haven’t had a pair of distressed jeans in a while…). Um, and the fact that I had to size down two sizes to a 28 in these didn’t hurt the decision to get them π
But this gets me back to the issue of what’s “flattering” on me (Une Femme wrote a GREAT piece on this a while ago). I know Wednesday’s outfit with the the J Brand Lovestory jeans is a very flattering look for me, and by contrast, this look isn’t AS flattering. But that doesn’t mean it’s BAD. I like to wear things that I FEEL good in, and I’m not referring just to comfort here. I felt great in my Lovestory outfit; very powerful and tall, but I also kind of felt “made up” in a way. Not completely “me” – because of my shoes; I just can’t do an extreme platform anymore! Today, I feel 100% me – casual, chic, pulled-together, comfortable. I also think I look great, mostly because everything is aligned completely with this outfit, there’s not one element that’s pulling a different direction (like my shoes did in the Lovestory outfit), so to speak.
Ultimately, we must wear whatever “aligns” for us, and if it fits within the traditional definition of “flattering,” then great, but if it doesn’t, that’s also fine. (if only I could convince my husband of that ;))
What’s your most flattering outfit? Is it also one you enjoy wearing? Or do you often find conflict between flattering outfits and outfits you like wearing?
Have a great weekend!!!
This color looks very nice on you. Did you get the same size (Medium)? I got mine in Small, and it definitely does not slouch like yours. I like how it looks both ways, though. The slouch is very neat and trendy-looking. π
Oh, and to answer your question. I usually wear what I feel good in and find flattering at the same time. I can’t wear stuff that doesn’t work on my body type. I just feel like fish out of the water and get super self-conscious. I also don’t ever dress up as I just love casual clothes. That’s why finding a wedding outfit is such a turmoil! I don’t want to just have a special-occasion dress/skirt/top – it has to be something I can wear on a regular basis and that can be dressed up/down.
I like this outfit equally well on you! I don’t think it’s less flattering at all. π In fact, you just made me add those jeans to my Saks bag, darn it!
The jeans are killer. I love every single thing about them.
I think this outfit looks even better! You totally own it – it’s easy to see you feel good in it. I actually went to Saks last night to try on these jeans. Unfortunately I didn’t think they were all that flattering and I ended up buying the r & b 5-pocket leggings instead, which were incredibly flattering. After seeing this picture though, I couldn’t resist and went ahead and ordered these too π Even if they’re not the most flattering jeans on me, I loved how they felt and I know they will work so well with the rest of my wardrobe. In general, I don’t really buy into the notion that I should only wear the most flattering styles for my body type. Obviously I don’t want to look bad, but I don’t want to limit my choices either. And I swear, if I see Stacy and Clinton tell one more woman she should only wear dark denim with a straight leg/slight flare and blazers that accentuate the waist, I’m going to scream π
Well, I got my blouse, and I’m disappointed. Unfortunately, I don’t have slender arms, so, while it fits (I got a Medium) through the arms, the look is far from flattering. My upper arms look sort of too tight, and I like how the blouse looks on the model with sleeves being a bit loose. What a bummer. I guess I’ll stick to their t-shirts and sweatshirts for now. My search for the wedding outfit continues!
i got mine too!!!! posted a picture: http://grechenscloset.com/quick-everlane-silk-blouse/
i’m sorry you’re disappointed π i am big in the upper arms, and while it’s a little snug, i don’t think it’s bad, and not terribly unflattering (i could be delusional though!!). i’m just in love with the color, and that it fits in the hips. it’s very blousy when i tuck it in, but overall, i’m so excited about it! i will definitely get teh blue one too…
It looks good on you! Hmm, now you made me question myself. Maybe I should try it on again. I was originally hoping to wear it with that belt but it doesn’t look that great.
I guess I kind of have a “uniform” in which I feel my best. And I suppose that means it’s my most flattering. It’s pretty simple really: A flowy t-shirt (Wilt, Velvet, Splendid, Pickwick & Weller…you’ve got to try them!!), a pair of Paige “Jimmy Jimmy” skinny boyfriend jeans, my olive cargo jacket that I got for a steal at the GAP (the waist has a drawstring, so it makes me LOOK like I have one!), and my booties (they’re dupes for Isabel Marant “Dickers”).
My husband likes it, and tells me, so I guess that’s a clue. So is Leo “Man-repelled” or are you referring to HIS outfits??? π
keep trying it! the arms are definitely slightly tight on me, but NOT even close to how tight they were on my equipment blouse.
leo is totally repelled. it’s rare that he likes anything i wear, except he did tell me he liked the “lovestory” outfit. so if we go out, i try to wear things i think he’ll like, but truly, he doesn’t like much LOL
Too funny! Keep on being you. That’s what he really likes! π
Gretchen, thanks for the mention! I’ve been eyeing those Everlane pieces, good to know about the sleeves. Do you find they stretch out with wearing at all? I love your “uniform!”
Thank you!
I haven’t found that the sweatshirts stretch at all. They’re a blend, not all cotton, so they hold shape nicely.
