This slip dress by Raquel Allegra is such an easy, essential piece IN THEORY, that you’d think I’d be wearing it all the time. Not so. (of course) It’s partially my body type that keeps me from really embracing the dress (I definitely prefer more fitted, narrow dresses/skirts than a-line), but for a slip dress, it’s a bit more “fussy” than I’d like.
For example, I have to wear a slip with it because it’s rather sheer. Or wear it as a slip itself, which I feel weird about, because I’d NEVER pay this much for a slip! I’ve worn it once or twice with jeans, but overall, that’s not a look I really embrace much lately – it’s a bit too art teacher-y for me. The slip dress overall borders on art teacher, but hopefully I can skew it more edgy-chic with shoes like my Freda Salvador flats, or Robert Clergerie platform sandals. And I love it layered over a white tee, 90’s style.
I really love the dress, though, and think about wearing it a lot. But when I put it on, I take it off again. Story of my life…I’m working hard to overcome that though, and I think figuring out ways that I can wear this dress more often will help, as will just doing it, stupid body image issues be damned.
Oh, and I’m so over my leg tattoo. Honestly, I forget it’s even there until I look at these outfit pictures. And even then, I don’t hate it, but I wish I didn’t have it. I’m not sure it bothers me enough to try and have it removed though. I don’t know. Again, of course everyone who told me I’d regret my tattoos were right. Funny how that works !! We think we know everything, until it turns out we really don’t…
Happy Friday! I hope you have a great weekend. My step-son arrives tomorrow for his spring break next week. We’re staying in town, but I have some fun things planned; I hope the weather stays nice.
I know what you mean about tattoos! I have one on my ankle that I’m still quite fond of (and don’t find all that intrusive). But I’ve got a small one on my upper right chest that doesn’t quite work with certain necklines. I’ve thought of having it removed but if I’m going to spend that much money on lasers I want hair removed or eyesight improved before that!
Black dress/gray sweater is a combo I wear at least twice a week. So I love this look! Have a great weekend!
yes, definitely! i’d rather have eye surgery or whatever before getting my tattoos removed. feels like such a waste of money to me…and honestly, they don’t bother me too much, i just forget i have them! until i see pictures that is 😉
Cover up the tat with something beautiful and large!
From all outfits I like the dress with jeans on you the most, it looks modern and cool. Not everyone can pull it of as great as you did. Love it!
On a different note I have to admit I don’t understand the idea pushing yourself to wear something you take off right after you put it on. What is the point? You have many beautiful outfit options you feel comfortable wearing so why to punish yourself to ‘go outside of your comfort zone’? Why?
Let’s say, if don’t feel comfortable wearing short skirts/dresses, I don’t by them and wearing pants is my signature look. I don’t mean to attack or criticize you, it is just an honest question:-)
I love your blog!
thanks for your comment bea! i totally understand your question, and wonder it myself quite often 😉
theoretically i shouldn’t buy things that i wouldn’t wear, but if i have bought them, and already own them, and it turns out that i don’t wear them as often as i thought i would, i really want to try and understand why. i’m such an emotional dresser that sometimes i might not “feel” like wearing something that i might otherwise enjoy wearing. so this “pushing” myself to wear things i’ve already bought is just an experiment, really, in figuring myself out, and why + when i wear things and don’t. if that makes sense.
for example this dress i bought at the very end of the summer last year, so i’ll keep it through the summer this year before getting rid of it. and i’ll try to wear it as often as possible from now until then. honestly, i can never really “make” myself wear anything – i’m like a toddler that way – I’ll just take it off, but i’ll make myself try it on when i feel like wearing a dress.
that probably doesn’t clarify, but that’s my story LOL – i know now that i shouldn’t buy short a-line dresses anymore, because i don’t wear them, but when i’ve already bought something i try to wear it as often as possible…
Actually, it does clarify: earlier I missed the part that the dress is relatively new and it deserves a chance.
“honestly, i can never really “make” myself wear anything – i’m like a toddler that way” – this is hilarious, I love it:-))
Thank you for taking your time to answer my question Grechen.
