I got this Organic by John Patrick sweater several weeks ago from Garmentory when it finally went on sale (that’s my referral link, you’ll get a $20 credit when you sign up, and I will too) after I’d been stalking it a while. I have a VERY old Organic cardigan I got from Beklina back in 2008 and would like to get back into the brand; I respect their mission and appreciate that most of the basics are made from organic cotton.
I’m wearing a medium, and I love it, and although it’s too late now, I wonder if I should have gotten a smaller size. I STILL do not consider that I can wear a “small” and always default to mediums, but especially in such an oversized style, I think a small would have been better. Anyway, I’ve worn this sweater a lot and find it really easy to just throw on with anything. I love that it’s long in the back, but shorter in the front, so I don’t lose my shape altogether.
The only thing that bothers me about it, and that I should have considered, is that the sleeves are very loose, meaning I have to roll them up to get them to stay anywhere on my arm. I find that quite annoying, especially since all sleeves are very long on me anyway.
Ultimately, I’m quite happy with it otherwise, and I took it with me and wore it in Atlanta. Look for more Organic coming to my wardrobe this year, first, one of the new cropped cardigans, which is something I desperately need.
Finally, a note on the shoes. I like them, but not on me, but they were an impulse purchase from a local boutique and not returnable. (I get into trouble when I shop in person…especially small boutiques I want to support) I really wanted to find something more sustainable to replace my old black Vince sneakers I’m retiring, but these aren’t it. I’m not exactly sure why, just that I’m not excited about them when I look at them on me.
A case in which I should have implemented my 24 hour rule, but didn’t. Oh well, maybe they’ll grow on me.
Do you tend to make more “mistakes” when you shop online or in person?
**oh, forgot to mention that I ordered Everlane’s new silk square shirt yesterday, the black one in size 6 and the gray one in size 4. I really love the idea of the shirt, but I don’t think I’ll like the sleeves, and I have no idea how the sizes will fit…Reviews next week!
I like the shoes – and the sweater!
Oh – and the bag!
I don’t know, I make an equal number of mistakes online and offline shopping. 😉 In real life it is easier to get caught up in an impulse buy, and one of the local boutiques I shop at usually has a final sale policy on sale items. I’ve pretty much stopped buying anything final sale online, but it doesn’t stop me from making mistakes.
One online mistake I made recently, though, was buying something from a UK store that while they shipped for free and the order was returnable, they don’t have free returns, so the cost to return was almost as much as I’d spent. It’s a small site and they were very nice, but they just don’t have the volume of business to support overseas free returns, which I completely understand. The problem is, I LOVE the shoes, and just need a smaller size. But I don’t want to risk re-ordering and having TWO pairs of shoes that don’t fit, and it’s a brand that isn’t sold in the US. Live and learn…
thanks chris 🙂
I like the shoes! I hope they grow on you. They are very sleek in the photos.
i guess i make the same amount of mistakes online & off, but it feels worse when i do it in person for some reason… my problem with online shopping is that once i have it, it’s hard for me to return it, like if i was trying something on in person i’m more likely to leave it at the store if it’s not perfect, but when i get it delivered, i try to make it work when i probably shouldn’t..
with offline shopping, i only get into trouble with final sale, and i just have to make myself NOT do it anymore, unless i implement my waiting period rule. if i’d done that with the shoes, i probably would’ve forgotten about them in 24 hours, or wouldn’t want to go back to the store badly enough.
ugh. final sale is such an issue. we make the tradeoff because the price on final sale items is usually really good, but i don’t know. i’m beginning to think it’s better to pay full price and have the opportunity to return/exchange…if i’m paying full price for something, i’m going to buy a lot less. i know that.
thanks yasmara! i like them too, perhaps they’re just “different” for me? need to get used to them…
I shop more in person than online so have more mistakes in person. I’ve become really good at taking stuff back so can usually rectify this! Another strategy I use is to pin items, then go in store, try the item on and make notes in Pinterest re size etc, delete pins that don’t fit or that I don’t like, then depending on my need/interest, I wait till they go on sale. Of course, that is the perfect world scenario!
I bought two Kowtow pieces the other day and both are in getting sleeves shortened. Can’t wait for the figurine sweater, I’ve had my eye on it for a while and finally got to try it on in store. I find the oversized style more difficult to know my sizing as well, especially new brands, so trying on (if possible) helps me. Full price, but I am confident it will be in my wardrobe for a long time!
oh! you’re lucky you have a place to try on kowtow in person. i love the brand, but have hesitated to buy online because i wasn’t sure how it would fit. i did get two things i like, and fit okay though…
you’re so right about oversized styling (which so many pieces are these days) – it makes sizing so much more complicated!
i’m good at taking things back in person, not so great after shopping online. too much of a hassle LOL
The shoes look good in the picture, and I love those jeans on you!
thank you holly!
Oh I agree about online purchases being a hassle to return. I’ve just sold mine on at consignment stores quite successfully, much easier! Yes I definitely feel lucky to be able to try Kowtow on. Another NZ brand I’ve been looking at lately is Moochi, they have a gorgeous sweater/cape-y assymetrical knit that I’m off to try on. These in-between seasons (Autumn/Spring) are a real killer, so many great items!!
Oops, actually it’s Ricochet, not Moochi!!
Those shoes look great on you. Try to embrace them ?
I’m a huge fan of Organic by John Patrick. The Henry Lehr boutique that I have mentioned before carries a lot of his pieces. I often find them too pricey for my budget, and they don’t often go on-sale. But once in a great while, something great appears at a friendly price. 🙂 That sweater you’re wearing has been on my dream list.
As for shopping mistakes, I think if you look the words up in the dictionary, there’s a photograph of my face. I return all the time! But I’ve figured out that since I’m not paying for gas, wear and tear on the car, lunch and Starbucks, I’m still coming out ahead by online shopping. My most recent mistake was breaking my own rule: “NO jeans purchases online unless I own the brand, style and size already!” They were bad…really bad.
yeah, it’s hard to find org by JP on sale; they’re probably better about producing in limited quantities, and only what they think will sell. which is very smart, and ultimately much more sustainable. but bad for those of us who want discounts!! garmentory is a great resource for organic now, since there are so many boutiques represented, and if you stalk something until the end of the season, you can usually get lucky – that’s how i got this sweater…
I never even thought about that! Production equals consumption equals less waste. I’m loving Garmentory! Great options. I think I had signed up before, but didn’t use my coupon in time, so unfortunately, your link didn’t work for me. Do you think I should ask them for it? (I’m sure they’d have a record of whether I used it or not.) I’d love for you to get credit, too!
you could also sign up with a different email address 😉
but yes, i’d ask them for it, or mention that you couldn’t use it in time, or something…i’ve been very happy with all the correspondence i’ve had with them.
