James Perse mini canvas tote
This is just an outfit. And yes, I’m posing with my “snack” of rice cake and hummus because the only time I had to take a picture of WHAT I ACTUALLY WORE yesterday was in between getting home from a long afternoon getting my car serviced (ugh), the grocery store, and then getting Dagny out for an afternoon walk. I was so hungry.
Please let me clarify for the millionth time, in case you are new here: I am not a fashion blogger. I don’t know what I am exactly, but I’ve never been as concerned (obviously) with my photographs as I am with the words – the story behind the outfit, how I feel about the clothes I review, and my thoughts about the items I feature. I appreciate reality, and anyway, I don’t know how to do anything else. I’ve tried to stage photos, and have professional pictures taken, but I get bored with perceived “perfection” and move on. I started out as an outfit of the day blogger, and I think that’s where my heart really is.
In this outfit I wanted to make note of two things: If you haven’t tried or don’t have a pair of James Perse leggings and you appreciate opaque, comfortable, perfectly-fitting leggings, I urge you to try these. I’m wearing a size 2 here and I had them hemmed a year or so ago (these are several years old and still in excellent shape), which I sort of regret. Unless your sister’s dog rips a hole in them with his teeth (that happened), these leggings are pretty much indestructable.
I also cannot recommend these shoes highly enough. The color I’m wearing is on sale but Shopbop has three styles: denim, raffia and black embossed that are eligible for their coupon code. Yes, Robert Clergerie shoes are expensive, so I try to find them on DEEP sale (at least 50% off), but they are hands down the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever worn (assuming you get the right size, which is sometimes tricky), and my oldest pair is about a decade old. If you take care of them they will last you forever – or at least as long as you want them to. The Real Real has a nice selection of second hand Robert Clergerie, and we have a couple in SLOWRE.
Today I’m going to the Eileen Fisher store to see what’s new. Will report back tomorrow!!
I love your outfit of the day posts! I really really do. I think that’s what I love most about your blog, actually. I just adore seeing how you use the things you’ve purchased, which you are very open and considerate about — it’s so inspiring, you feel like a real person making real decisions (because, of course, you are!)
I ordered a pair of the JP leggings finally. Hope I love them! My old leggings have finally been relegated to home only.
I have a pair of Robert Clergerie stretch suede boots with a square heel from a few years ago. They are SO super chic.
Coveting these shoes now–

oh! let me know how you like them. i swear, they last forever. and i even dry mine…
love those RC shoes!!! they are so beautiful, and would be a wonderful work shoe i think.
thanks julia 🙂
Grechen – do those leggings fade? I’ve had cotton-spandex leggings before (different brand) that turned gray after just a couple washes in cold water (no dryer).
Hi Grechen-
Love anything ES on you and in general. I have to get the Harper in Linen!
So lovely Grechen how this community you’ve created shares it’s passion for clothing and all of its facets- I have found people on instagram too that are kindred spirits who also inspire me. Tha’ts why when I know Ive got a homerun I put up a photo. I look forward to checking in with you daily and Deborah on Stylishmurmurs etc. and see how youre doing and what youre wearing. My best friend Michelle and I don’t hang up until we have shared what each of us is wearing – sounds so funny when I type that lol But we have been doing that for years. Yesterday I wrote you an outfit suggestion for your wide leg pants and moto. So I’m starting to think about your clothes and differnt outfits for you too. 🙂 Can’t wait to read about your Eileen F visit.
Could you elaborate a little more on the “trickiness” of RC shoes? I love the ones you linked to and I usually wear an 8.5-9, but hesitate to order if the fit is tricky!
I always wear a 38.5 and I’m an 8 but had some trouble with two styles not fitting exactly right in that size. For these I’m wearing a 38.5 and they’re perfect.
They are brushed jersey so already they’re not blackest black. But they haven’t faded much at all.
Thanks!
I find that all James Perse black isn’t really black but sort of heathered charcoalish black 🙂
You’re a breath of fresh air in the blogging world! I have ZERO interest in following “perfect” bloggers with “perfect” hair and makeup, who never wear the same outfit twice, or who spell Grechen with a “T”! You’ve got more to say, you make me think and try to do better.
Keep up the good work! 🙂
Thanks!
