James Perse shirred tube skirt | size 1, which is a size down from my “normal” JP size
Everlane linen top
The Palatines Caelum slides
MM6 Perforated Neoprene tote | similar, hobo style
I wish Everlane had made this exact top again, I really love it. Mine is about a year old, and is still available in a size XS. Their older linen styles were better-made in my opinion, the seams are folded under and stitched down, so they don’t pop-out (which probably doesn’t make sense, but is what drives me crazy about my new Everlane linen tees), and I just love this longer style with the long side slits. And by now, with so much wear/washing, this top is ridiculously soft.
And then, I could go on and on about this skirt, but I won’t. I’ll just say it’s exactly the right midi-length pencil skirt for me. A skirt this narrow and this length takes a bit of getting used to walking in, but I’ll have you know, at one point during my day I had to “hustle” across an intersection, and did so easily, EVEN in these slides! The skirt also rides up a bit when you walk, which makes it easier to walk in.
Anyway, if you’re a James Perse fan, or even not, yet, this is an essential piece, and one that will come in handy for so many situations, and last for many years. I wore my older one a lot, until I didn’t fit me anymore, and it still never showed signs of wear, so I was able to pass it on to someone else who would appreciate it.
I have a stretchy heavier weight black skirt in the exact same length and shape that I bought in the mid-90s for a pretty significant price back then. I wore it exhausively, especially for work travel. It never wrinkled, never let me down, could be worn almost anywear, anytime. Many might not agree with me, but to me, even when it was not technically “in style,” it was always elegant and appropriate. I recently ordered a similar one (I think) in black terry that I figure will be cooler and more casual for summer. I am on my way now to pick it up at the post office. If it doesn’t work out, I will probably go for the JP one!
Love that skirt on you. Every time I see you in it I want to give it a try. My hips are not usually slim skirt friendly, but it is possible that the shirred part might help with my uneven silhouette.
That skirt is cute esp for the pear shape. I went looking for a skirt yesterday .. like a maxi skirt or high/low skirt and found – nada. Ugh, dresses everywhere .. hardly any skirts. Well, I may have to try this tube skirt !!

Didn’t work out. It’s a beautiful skirt, better quality than I thought it would be, but “hugs my shape” hardly captures the experience. I’m close to Grechen in sizing….normally higher end of a small or lower end of a medium. I ordered a medium “to be sure” and having slipped into it, I’m not even sure I would fit into a large. It’s not uncomfortable, but it shows the shape of each of my thighs, my two butt cheeks, my belly…..maybe it’s just that the cut doesn’t work on my shape. Have tried pulling the waist up or down, but given the surprizingly heavy fabric, it is too hot if I pull it up and I get muffin top if I pull it down. I used to get this problem sometimes in High School, as I had more of an hourglass figure then, but this has never happened to me post babies and menopause, as I have evened out.
LOVE that skirt on you. It’s practically sold out everywhere now, sniffle.
Also, you’re selling those AHHHHMAZING Clergerie wedges!? You’re breaking my heart here, girl.
Those shoes were always a teeny bit small on me, I shouldn’t have kept them in the first place, but they’re so freaking beautiful. Story of my life 🙁
And the skirt- I don’t know why no one else seem to have carried it in black either. Weird. I bet jp will restock it, they seem to do that…
And I want the top! C’mon, Everlane….RESTOCK!!!
I’ve worn my Clergerie wedges maybe 15 times, and I’ll be damned if the suede uppers just aren’t stretching out a hair too much from my giant elephant feet. I guess if worse comes to worse I can add some kind of liner inside the straps to keep them snug. This will not keep me from selling them because they are a work of art.
I’ll keep an eye out for the skirt, if you think it will get restocked. I was hoping to get it through Nordstroms on my 10x point day this past week, but alas….
Argh. The Clergeries’ stretching will *not* make me sell them. I love those ridiculous shoes.
So, Grechen, you’ve made a James Perse convert of me. I just purchased it yesterday at the New York City Madison Ave store after calling around to the different New York City stores to see who had it in stock. OMG, it is everything you say it is and more. Got it home and spent the next 30 minutes trying it with different tops. Hope they will make it in different colors, charcoal, midnight, espresso to name a few. Thank you, Grechen for your wonderful blog!
yay!!! so glad you love it 🙂
Grechen, did you try both size 1 and 2 in this? We are similarly sized in the waist, but I am leaning towards the 2 so that I can wear it to work without being TOO fitted, but I don’t want it to feel/look loose.
I don’t think I tried the 2 on but the moment I put the 1 on I knew it was the right size. I wore it today actually!! Honestly there won’t be a whole lot of difference in the sizes – but I always lean towards more fitted with jp on me because I prefer it to suck me in a little. The one in this skirt is definitely not too fitted…
