I really don’t “do” Pinterest much, preferring to share what I find interesting here, on the blog, but I have started to use it a bit more lately, for pinning random things I find quickly. It’s useful that way. I don’t really FIND inspiration on Pinterest, honestly, because most of the outfit pictures I see pinned are the same old bloggers, or models, which can be a good source of inspiration generally, but not for me.
Until now, I’ve never really thought about where my inspiration for my style comes from; I don’t have a style icon. I can never name an actress or a model I’d like to “be” like, or dress like, or whatever. I really just get my inspiration from shopping and finding things I love. So, I think it’s only natural that my inspiration comes from shopping sites, and designer’s (of course James Perse!) sites online. I’ve always loved Net-a-Porter’s styling ideas, Totokaelo is a favorite, La Garconne can do no wrong, and lately, I’ve been finding a lot to love at The Dreslyn.
Which is a long way to say that The Dreslyn is where I got my basic inspiration for this outfit, or the sweatshirt specifically, because all the other pieces are completely different. Mostly, it just took this picture to realize that I could wear the gray sweatshirt I bought for my husband to wear around the house recently (that he doesn’t wear…can you believe it!!), with jeans and get the best oversized look.
I’ve been putting all my favorite outfit ideas and products in my “What to Wear” board on Pinterest, perhaps you’ll find some inspiration there? And do follow me on Pinterest if you’re there, and I’ll follow you back!! Jump through below to see my Pinterest board.

Where do you find inspiration?
Thanks for the introduction to The Dreslyn. Now I know all the cool places! Unfortunately, I’m not going to grow 6 inches, dye my hair brown, and cut bangs, but hey, I get it.
I follow you, happily, already on Pinterest:).
haha! maybe i will though 😉
i just love their styling. they put things together exactly how i would…
How do you feel about your jeans alterations? Did they come out the way you wanted them to?
The Dreslyn has lovely lovely things. I’ve already bought and returned 4 different beautiful items from them!
Also, I love the Current / Elliott Flip Flop jeans in your “inspiration” photo. Perfect amount of flare and a wonderful slouchy California beachy summer look.
i’ve nearly checked out with a few things at the dreslyn, but never did…i love that they have frequent codes right now! definitely have a lot of things on my wishlist. including those white jeans in my photo. i might be able to do it…
i liked the alterations – i had her take in an inch around the waist and straighten the legs a bit (they were more flared), and it turned out well. for only $22 also…i was originally going to wear the hem folded up, but then i got inspired by some newer denim styles that have frayed hems and just decided to cut them myself. they’re certainly comfortable, and i can’t believe they’re still holding up so nicely after nearly 10 years. i guess i pad about $175 for them then, which was a TON, so i’m glad they’re wearing well 🙂
I wasn’t going to comment on this post, but the model in first pin (black & white striped maxi) is my step sister. Its always weird to open a site and see a familiar face. Sort of like recognizing a location in a movie that is standing in for something else. It takes you away from the fantasy and back to reality. I pin things to pinterest so that I’ll remember them later, but I never search there for inspiration. Maybe I’m bad at the search terms, but I never seem to find what I’m looking for. I think I like street style photos the best for inspiration. I used to love What I Wore on flickr, and sites like Hel-looks.com where normal people were featured, but lately I find its a lot harder to find inspiration online.
whoa. that’s crazy. that would be weird too.
i agree with you on it being harder to find inspiration online now, especially amongst fashion bloggers, or even on “street style” sites; everyone tends to look the same to me. i’m going to embark on a challenge though, and post next week my favorite pinners and/or places to find inspiration online…
I find inspiration in a few blogs ( Yours, obviously, and a few others, including Garance Dore, WhoWhatWear, Refinery 29 and occasionally features on Pop Sugar). But I find the term “Street Style” almost laughable these days. It may have started out as REAL people on the street, snapped in candid situations, but all you have to do is look at the roundup of regulars on the Street Style blogs and you see the same off-duty models, editors, and bloggers dressed as though they’re headed for a VOGUE editorial shoot! I don’t find that realistic for my life, nor inspirational. Keep on keeping it REAL, Grechen!
There is a lot of similarity– lots of young 20 somethings who LOVE JCrew. Which is fine, I like JCrew too, but no one really styles JCrew better than the JCrew catalog, so its just not very inspiring. Also, so many bloggers seem to have the exact same sponsorships, so they are getting the same items for free and you see them featured over and over. Looking forward to your list of favorite inspirational sites.
Also, sorry, I did not mean to link to my own unrelated post. The comment interface added that and I didn’t see the check mark until too late. Now I don’t know how to delete.
it’s not a problem sasha – it doesn’t need to be a “relevant” post, it’s just there to let everyone get to know each other better, and visit each other’s blogs if they have one. i loved that post actually, as i too, am starting to have a “thing” for chairs 🙂
