THE GREAT knotted tee dress | size 1, washed black 100% cotton version at Shopbop
Robert Clergerie Frazzia sandals
MM6 perforated fabric tote | purchased with credits fromΒ ForzieriΒ – sold out
So…obviously I decided to take a chance on this dress by THE GREAT. (mine is now sold out on Shopbop) after posting about it a while ago and saying I wouldn’t. But then Shopbop went and had a coupon code…so I ordered it with my credits; I’m STILL a sucker for a “good” deal. Honestly, I ordered it thinking I’d probably return it, but when I put it on, I was pleasantly surprised by the fit. And that it’s not black.
I’m wearing a size 1, which translates to a small, and as you can see, is still quite oversized on me. I love the long line it creates, and the slit up the side shows enough skin so that I’m not completely swallowed up. I will say that if the washed black 100% cotton version had been available at the time, I probably would have ordered that one instead of this one (which is a blend, and dry clean only). But then again…one of the things I like about this dress is the lighter color for me. So, maybe not. So far, I’ve dry cleaned it at home using Dryel, but I may try and wash it in cold water on delicate and hang to dry – it could stand to shrink a bit in length anyway, which is usually the risk you take with washing anything.
Anyway, since my recent surprise acceptance of my body/saddlebags/legs I’ve been much more comfortable in my ruched/fitted James Perse dresses & skirts, and ultimately I think they’re much more flattering on me, so I’m not drawn as often to my two oversized dresses (this one and my Oak dress), but I do appreciate the option of a much more relaxed silhouette every once in a while.
Also, for summer, and our impending heat wave of over 100 degree days, I prefer to wear things that have as little contact with my skin as possible, so these two dresses will get much more wear!
I love this dress on you! The way it ties at the bottom and the side slit show just the right amount of skin.
However, this dress would look awful on me–I would look like I was wearing a tent due to my chest. After seeing some photos of me in my Emerson Fry caftan I sold it on eBay, because it turns out to be just about the worst-looking garment I could choose. Which I am at peace with.
thanks jen – did you get a good price for your EF caftan? i’m thinking of selling mine too – who am i kidding?? i’d wear it at the beach, but that’s not in the cards for a while. and i just can’t bring myself to wear it as a dress…again…i bought it because of the price. so very tempting!
Reminds me so much of the Oak dress, which I have in gray. I’m a fan, and I’m glad you didn’t get it in black because it would be almost the same dress you have already!
At first I was weary of my gray dress (at least outside of the house) – it just seems more casual than the same thing in black – but now, less so. And I think the black would be less appealing to me in summertime (better for spring/fall) – I’d just be too hot.
Looks great on you, Grechen. Cool, comfy, elegant – and love the grey!
It sold quickly–which means I probably could have asked more π Honestly, I was just hoping to get something back for what I paid and move on. I love the fabric but the style was just not good on me.
oh wow – I really like this dress on you. I t looks comfy yes, but also seems to be figure-flattering as well, that is, it doesn’t look like a tube of dress. The color is a good choice as well.
Yeah with ultra hot temps, comfort is key. It’s showing 94 with a 98 heat index on our little weather station thing. Good times.
sidenote: Did I miss why did you ended up electing to sell off your Rachel Comey shoes?
i didn’t talk much about it – getting rid of my rachel comey wedges – but i decided to after i got the robert clergerie sandals. they’re much more comfortable and walkable than the rachel comey wedges, which i know i won’t wear anymore. i didn’t wear them much anyway…they are just too high. i know my limits now LOL
I love this on you, you look phenomenal!
You look so lovely in that dress! I would seriously give my right pinky finger for a nice, simple plus size t-shirt dress that was made in America and was a neutral color. I swear it is the unicorn of my sartorial life.
You’ve got to just BELIEVE, Cathy!!! π
Grechen, this dress is truly GREAT on you! Now I’ve got two dresses to choose from and I could be happy with either way….OAK or The Great! Glad you got it in grey, or it would just seem like a duplicate. Plus there’s something about the way this fits. Not too big, not too small, but just right. The Goldilocks of dresses π
thank you cathy!!! i’ll find you one π
