If you follow me on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter you already saw a couple of peeks of the new Everlane loafer but here are more details. Everlane sent me these to review for you at launch, so I just received them yesterday afternoon. I haven’t worn them “out” yet, but I did spend a few hours walking around the house in them, and taking pictures, so I have a pretty good feel for the fit I think.
**edited 12/10/2014 – I’ve had these for a while now, and am really pleased with how they fit and how comfortable they are. There was a break-in period, but it was only a couple of wears. I HIGHLY recommend sticking with your true size, unless you tend to run on the larger size; they will stretch with wear, and give a little. Fabulous loafers.
My loafers are a size 8, which is my normal size. When I first put them on, they were VERY snug. I was a little scared at first that they wouldn’t fit. But I kept them on and wandered around a bit and they started to give quite nicely. They’re also a narrow, pointy toe, which is something my feet aren’t used to after being in Birkenstocks all summer! So, some adjustment was to be expected. And I know my feet “swell” at the end of the day because it’s still 90million degrees here.
The leather is luxurious and soft, but substantial; I think these will hold up to a lot of wear. They’re made in Italy, which is impressive given the price point, but then again, Everlane never ceases to amaze me in terms of quality and price, so I expected nothing less from the loafer.
I’m impressed. But then again, I didn’t think I wouldn’t be. You know I’d been searching for a black loafer, and am pleased to say I’ve found the ones I’ll wear for quite some time. The pointy toe is different for me, but very modern, and bonus! leg elongating! When I first opened these, I quickly put them on with an old James Perse knee-length dress I was wearing, and loved how much longer and leaner they made my legs look. Of course, that’s just because the point is drawing your eye down, but I’ll take it! Anyway, I think I can pull these off with a dress or skirt, not just pants/jeans. Wait for the outfits!!
The other colors are great too – the olive looks like a nice subtle color for fall, and the burgundy is so rich looking. Now…we wait for the crossbody bag and new cashmere ๐

Did you order a pair of Everlane loafers? Which color? How are you going to style them?
Ordered mine last night! Black size 8. Keeping my fingers crossed that after much searching these will be the shoes I have been looking for (comfortable, stylish loafer).
I really appreciate your comments. I probably would have tried them on and taken them off promptly thinking they were too tight and stiff. Now I will give them a chance to relax and fit my foot.
Plus they have a new crossbody bag coming out?!!! Another item on my list for Fall.
yay! oh yes..i’m waiting to see the crossbody bag too – it looks so nice, and i could use a more functional one for traveling, etc.,
and as i mentioned, i was a bit nervous that the shoes weren’t going to fit, but after some time, they’ve become much more comfortable. i did notice a couple evenings ago when i was trying on my “winter” shoes that a pair of madewell booties that fit me fine when i bought them are pretty uncomfortably snug right now. so, i think my feet are swollen from the heat, and the end of the day, and after it cools down, they’ll fit normally.
anyway, walk around in them awhile and give your feet time to get used to them, and them to your feet. if you’ve worn them at home for a couple hours and they’re still not better, then maybe exchange for a size up. or see if they can be stretched just a bit. i was worried that the next 1/2 size up would be much too big (or long) if i had to do that…
In other Everlane news, they leaked on Twitter that they are going to have women’s pants in early October–check out the comments on the 18th of September pic…They have not been mentioned on the coming soon…

Actually, NEVER MIND, they were talking about the loafers. I was just HOPING for those pants…
haha! i was just there, reading trying to figure it out. i was getting VERY excited. i’m sure they’ll do pants, although pants are MUCH harder than tops…but they’ve got a good thing going here. with pants, you could theoretically have an entire Everlane wardrobe. very minimalist ๐
the pants she’s wearing look like my hope news trousers, assuming they fit correctly (mine are too big, so pretty slouchy)
Back to the loafers….how do they compare to your Dieppa Restrepo loafers in terms of construction and quality? I have a pair of their oxfords and have been very impressed, so wondering how they compare. The Everlane loafers look really well made in all of the pictures.
honestly, if i didn’t know, i would think the everlane loafers were much more expensive shoes, more on par with the price of DP. and since i really haven’t worn them yet, i don’t know how they’ll hold up, but they seem sturdy enough to hold up to normal wear. maybe the sole is a teeny bit thinner than DP? or much more expensive shoes? but that really is the only difference i can tell.
my DP loafers are several years old and on one, there’s a stitch coming out on the side (I will probably just cut it off…) and they look a little worse for wear because they’re a light suede color (i should probably clean them…), but otherwise, they’re still beautiful and comfortable shoes.
I’m glad to see your review of the loafers! My main issue with shoes is that they usually cut into my ankle bone. I also have wide Birkenstock feet. I guess it wouldn’t make sense to go up half a size because they’re so pointy and long. It’s good to hear that the leather stretches a little.
hi Erica! i have that issue too, especially with any shoe by madewell, interestingly enough – these do NOT do that. (i think they’re cut lower on the foot, which is good)
Thanks for the review! I ordered them yesterday and also pair of DP penny loafers in black (last pair from Totokaelo–) Would be interesting to compare the fit/quality in person. Will only keep one pair though ๐
oh!! it’s going to be HARD to pick one ๐
they’re so different…but both very good…
please report back when you decide! i’d love to hear what you thought of both of them side by side.
Definitely a sweet shoe, but I’m not so sure of the pointed toe for me .. if the toe was a bit more almond shape .. I’d go for it.
Monica.

I will! Yes, it will be a hard decision, I can feel it –:)
I love this whole look. I’m a sucker for the classics. ๐

So, you’re saying they work well for a wide foot? (About a C width) and since they come in a 10.5, which is nearly impossible to find, they’re true to length? I really love the simplicity of these. Everlane knocked it out of the park! Tough to choose a color since they’re all gorgeous!
i’m not sure they’d work for a wide foot – maybe with some stretching? my foot is not wide (i dont’ think – i don’t think it’s particularly narrow either), and it took a while for these to get comfortable. they are long though, so they are true to length in my opinion. i think you should try them – their return policy is wonderful. AND if you get two things, they offer free shipping, so i think you should also try a t-shirt or a blouse. JUST TO TRY. as i’ve said before, i think their tops run at least a size large, so add a size to whatever they offer…
My Everlane enabler… ๐
Hi!!! I’m sooo interested in buying these… But I’m not sure if order them in size 8 or 8.5… It says 39 is 8.5 but here in the States I use a size 8 (except on Madewell D’Orsay, I used a 8.5)… WHAT should I doooooooooooo?!
I am a size 8/38 usually and I have a size 8 in these. As I mentioned they’re quite snug at first and have given a little, but maybe size up just in case? I wore mine for a little while again today and they were still sort of snug. Not sure if they’re snug enough to size up for me though, because of the pointy toe. And my feet are definitely swollen in the afternoons…
Grrrr, I’m always a 39 in EU size, but here is a mess!!! Each brand has a sizinggggggg ๐
What size do you wear in Zara? In case you use that brand ๐ There I also use an 8… And thanks!!!
I don’t own any Zara shoes but I think last time I tried a pair on it was a 7 or 7.5. I could be mistaken though. I’m pretty sure it wasn’t an 8. I have a pair of madewell booties that are 7.5
Thanks a lot!
I’ll go for the 8.5, hope I’m lucky, I hate returning items, waiting for the money, ordering again…
(You should by Zara shoes, the have really nice leather, maybe here in the US they are a little bit expensive…)
According to several responses on Everlane’s facebook page they’ll be launching men’s and women’s pants early 2015 ๐
yay! i knew they had to be coming…it makes sense.
thanks for the update ming ๐
I’m late to the party as usual, but I know you still come back and check these threads, Grechen. I’m very tempted by these loafers – they look amazing and I could use a pair of classic, wear-everywhere flats. So I’m going to bomb you with a few questions: What is the footbed like? Any cushioning at all? How flexible (or rigid) is the sole? Is the lining leather? I have very narrow heels and everything slips off on me, but the cut of this shoe looks promising. Of course I won’t really be able to tell until I get them on my feet and start walking. I’m hesitating mostly because shoe shopping in general is a nightmare for me, and I have yet to find anything to love from Everlane. I’ve returned everything I’ve tried so far – all clothing – because the cuts were so “off”” on me. Still, I love what they’re about and would be happy to help support that with some of my hard-earned cash ๐ Someday the right thing will come along. Could this be it?????
I’m also wondering about the footbed. I have a high arch and cannot do shoes that are totally flat. That’s what prevented me from ordering their beautiful sandals.
You temptress, you. Ah, must remember, I HAVE a pair of J. Crew “Derbys” in patent leather, and for day life these days I wear nothing but Birkenstocks, flip flops, and sneakers. Although I did try a pair of Gentle Souls recently that my feet might actually to as, you say, just slip them on and go.
Were I still working? LOVE those Everlanes.

sorry i’m so late with my reply!!
the footbed is not cushioned at all, but it’s comfortable. the sole is fairly flexible, and the same width as my dieppa resteppos (but the DPs are slightly more cushioned – although mostly at the heel). i believe the lining is leather; it appears to be. they’re very similar to my DP loafers, but more narrow all over, and just slightly less cushioned in the footbed, but really only just slightly.
i put them on again in the morning yesterday, just to check to see how much my feet swell in the afternoons, and they felt wonderful, BUT i was thinking about your questions when i put them on, and noticed that my heels wanted to slip up a bit. i didn’t wear them out (it’s still way too hot here), so i’m not sure how they would actually WEAR, but i do sometimes have to add those non-slip sticker thingies in my shoes to keep my heels from slipping up…
if i were you, i’d order them, just to see. they have such a great return policy, it seems worth a try ๐
I ordered the Everlane burgundy loafers in a size 9 (my typical size) and find the right shoe to be super narrow/tight feeling, though the left feels terrific. Disclosure – my feet are on the wide side after years of running ๐ I was thinking of returning and trying for a 9.5 when they restock in December, but now I’m wondering if I should give them more of a chance to stretch out with some laps inside my house. They are SO BEAUTIFUL… and super high quality feeling. I’m dying for them to work out! Thanks for your careful review, G!
i’m sort of conflicted. on the one hand, i HATE uncomfortable shoes, and will never wear them, and am the first to say return if they don’t fit. with these, though, i feel like they just need more time, they literally fit perfectly everywhere but in the toe box, and even then, it’s not THAT bad. i’ve worn shoes before that i couldn’t even make it more than a few minutes in, and i wore these for hours pretty comfortably. i wanted to take them off afterwards, but unless they’re sandals or sneakers, i usually want to take my shoes off. i am going to give mine more time to stretch, and maybe get some spray, or even stretch them out a bit myself, because i don’t think sizing up is the answer for ME…but it might be for you. i say wear them more in your house, and then decide…you know your feet!!
Oh oh….here comes a massive case of FOMO!!! (For me!)
Hi again, G-
Just chiming back in to say I broke down and kept the Everlane loafers in 9 in a fit of lust about the design. In reality, I think my experience wearing them to work and walking around is similar to yours – I want to take them off at the end of the day ๐ I find they are not comfortable like my Coach moc driver loafers or Cole Haan penny loafers, but I am in head over heels love with them. I stopped being able to wear heels a few years ago, so keeping them felt like one attempt to strike back at the confines of sensible footwear ๐
In other news, I wanted to say I’m really inspired by your shopping and closet transformations here. I used to follow you as an avid shopaholic on tPF, but over the last few years – in tandem with you- have shifted my approach to pare down and even buy timeless classic forever items at full price (!). Very glad to see you writing about it here in your very relatable, sensible, and “real” voice <3
Jess
thank you jess ๐
i’ve worn mine more often lately, and still feel the same way, unfortunately. they’re not shoes i would wear for a whole day out, for example, which sucks, because i love them. i’m going to keep wearing them bits and pieces at a time, and i’m sure they’ll soften up over time and get more comfortable to wear for longer stretches. or at least i’m hoping so…they’re so beautiful !!!
I have to say that I bought them in the end in a size 8.5, and they are suuuper comfortable!!! I haven’t had any blisters and I can use them all day long!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Maybe it is because I chose a size up).
I’m glad to see the positive review for the loafer and mine should finally arrive tomorrow. I’ve been disappointed in Everlane’s sizing overall so far though. Probably because I’m only 5.0 and not particularly slender at 145, all but one of four tops I ordered from them this summer had to be returned. I thought the gorgeous boxy silk, short sleeved blouse might work but no. The one thing that did fit – the pique cotton cashmere raglan sweater – sheds like crazy so can’t be worn again. So, we’re not spending a lot for their products but I think the company has a long way to go before the sizing and quality appeals to more people who otherwise like their styling. Not yet such a bargain.
BTW Grechen,
Very happy to come across your blog, as we have very similar tastes! Thanks.
LP
thank you so much lily – i’m so glad you found me !!
lily, i LOVE the loafers. they took a couple wears to break in, and i really thought they were going to be too small, but they fit beautifully now, no issues at all with blisters, or pain, and i get a lot of compliments on them. i took my true size, but i know some people have sized up a half size…i think true is the way to go though…
you know, i have a first-generation seed stitch sweater and it didn’t shed at all, but i didn’t buy a newer version, mostly because it wasn’t my favorite sweater to begin with. and i ended up giving it to my sister. i definitely agree on the sizing issue, and hopefully they’ll work that out over time, i know they’re trying, and they’re VERY VERY receptive to customer feedback – i’ve given them plenty!!!
Interesting about the sweater, as I also bought a first gen.
Thanks again for feedback on the loafers – I’ll give them a fair go when they finally get here ๐
You mentioned DP loafers a while ago. Whose are those?
Oh sorry – I see they’re Dieppa Restrepo.
Ha! Good question, Lily. I just read it assuming Grechen meant “Dieppe Restrepo,” but that would be DR. ๐
… Or maybe there’s yet another brand we don’t know about :p
ugh. sorry about that, i meant DR = dieppa restrepo ๐
Thank you so much for this review, and for responding with periodic updates about how the shoe was breaking in. I ordered the shoe in December and I’m coming up on the 90 days to return the shoe. Sometimes I’m a 9.5, sometimes a 10, so I ordered the size 41. The shoe is so beautiful, but so tight! And given that I’m a borderline 9.5/10 I’m just really confused as to why it’s so tight. I’ve been trying to decide if I want to gamble on breaking it in, or if I should send it back. It’s helpful to know that for you they were broken in over time. In November you said you wouldn’t wear them for a full day, but in December you said you loved them. Do you find that you can wear them a whole day now? Thanks!!
Adelle (the Fashionista Lab)ยดs last blog post ..An Outfit Inspired By A Good Hair Day (& Hair Product Review)
yes, i can wear them for longer now, they fit beautifully. as i mentioned in the post, they did take some breaking in, and i put some moleskine in one shoe where it was rubbing a bit, but the leather loosened up really nicely in just a few days wearing around the house and once out…
I have been waiting for the loafers to be re-released, and snapped them up in black as soon as I got the email. Unfortunately, I don’t think they work for my feet! They are uncomfortably snug, and I remembered Gretchen’s were, too, so I put on a thin pair of socks and wore them around the house, but took them off because my small toes fell asleep, and my feet ached. Returning them. They are gorgeous, but ultimately just too narrow. Sad!
Oh no! This is exactly my sitch – I’m a 9.5/10 and look forward to ordering the 41 eventually (when I can.) Here’s hoping they somehow magically work for my feet. They’re so pretty!
Hello! Just wondered if you had an update on these shoes (I know it’s been awhile). Did these continue stretching out with wear? I have a wide toe box so I’m debating between 8 and 8.5. I have a pair of Clark’s chelsea boots in a size 8 that was a little tight at my big toe knuckle (lol) but it has stretched out. And I’m also not opposed to taking them to a cobbler to get them stretched, but there’s only so much they can do with that :).
Hi Alexandra! They did stretch, but not enough for me honestly. But then again I did not wear them very often. (I’m usually in sneakers or Birkenstocks) I know lots of people who wear theirs all the time and say they fit like a glove after wearing in though…
