Eileen Fisher Organic linen jumpsuit (small)| At Eileen Fisher & Nordstrom
James Perse slub crewneck tee (size 2)
Birkenstock Arizona Sandals
Clearly Eileen and I are having a moment…I’m having pretty good luck with Eileen Fisher this season. I saw these overalls online, and then Gloria left a comment about how great they are (she got a pair), so I decided to try them and see. As I was at Nordstrom picking up my correct-size Birkenstocks (I’d been wearing a size too large all summer last year – they’re for sale on slowre now), so I tried these overalls on in the XS, which was all they had in stock. The XS fit, but was a little snug on me and didn’t just fall like they’re supposed to, but I was interested enough to seek out the small.
I ordered the small, and then they sat in my closet until yesterday, when it was warm enough to wear them. I took these photos after wearing them about 5 hours, and by wearing I mean:
- sitting working at the kitchen table (when I sit, I move around a lot, and often sit with one foot up on the chair, hugging my knee. Yeah, weird. Or I sit on one ankle. I rarely sit like a normal person)
- Making myself lunch, during which I broke a ramekin and had to sweep up the glass, then get down on my knees to check and make sure I got it all
- playing with Dagny – lots of running and chasing in the yard
I am telling you that so you understand a little of what these have gone through their first wear. They have definitely stretched out since I first put them on, the elastic at the waist keeps them from completely losing shape (that’s a nice detail). I had to pee twice, which is never loads of fun in a one-piece, but the side zipper makes it easy to get these off and on; I just have to remember to hold on to them so they don’t pile onto the bathroom floor. Ew. (I do that with my ES Florence pants too BTW).
But the best thing? I’m not wearing a bra. Bet you couldn’t tell! I honestly don’t mind bras that much, and I have a couple very comfortable pairs, but if I can get away with not wearing one, I will always jump at the chance. Oh, and I usually will wear high-waisted panties with loose pieces like this and tuck my tee into the panties to minimize bumps from the tee.
So far, I really love these and am glad I tried them. I wish they were a little longer on me though, which is weird, because I hardly ever wish that LOL. I can’t imagine how cropped they are on someone taller than I am. But then again, many people love cropped pants; I prefer to see only just a little of my ankle, not much of my calf. Anyway…
I have had to get rid of so many things lately I don’t feel too bad about adding to my wardrobe. You may remember that I wanted to give all my money to Elizabeth Suzann this year, but I’ve been re-thinking that a bit. More tomorrow…I don’t want to hijack this post 🙂 I’ll also update my wardrobe audit and talk about my shopping goals for 2018.
I bought these too! I was in CA for work and went to the Eileen Fisher store and tried them on…I’ve been looking for overalls / jumpsuit but the Iliana Kohn and other indie brands didn’t really fit me, so I was thrilled to find these. Have not been able to wear them yet though. And I did the same thing with sizing up—the smaller size fit but I got the larger size.
ah!! great minds 🙂
They look really good and sound fairly functional too, all things considered. The crop is the perfect length on you for sure, but I feel like I’d probably look like an overgrown toddler with too much ankle sticking out. Crops are so hard for that reason! It really depends on how tall you are.
I know at the start of the year you had a plan for purchasing just a few pieces this year, but now that you’ve had to change up your wardrobe more for fit issues, do you think you’ll do a new strategic plan or are you taking a looser approach?
surprise, surprise, i don’t have a new strategic plan LOL – i am definitely playing fast and loose with my wardrobe right now 🙂
but i need to take a step back and re-examine it, and will write about that tomorrow and/or friday!
VERY CUTE, Grechen! Love this look on you. I’ve been having an EF moment too…bought a pair of the cropped leggings and another pair of loose-fitting-stretchy-cropped-pants that I don’t know the name of . I really do love her stuff. I think I can live on EF and ES and I’ll be one happy woman 🙂
Those are so cute! I must say that, ever since last summer, I’ve been obsessed with jumpsuits and overalls. I lived in my viscose Eileen Fisher jumpsuit until the fabric pretty much became a pilling mess. I just ordered a pair of the denim “Tuck” coveralls from Ilana Kohn; it’s my first purchase from Ilana Kohn, and I’m very curious to see if the piece will be worth the price. I do love my Clyde jumpsuit in black canvas from Elizabeth Suzann, which looks great with a fitted tee, as you’ve styled your outfit here.
I tried wearing a linen Georgia midi dress yesterday and discovered that I must now be a real Texan, because when the temperature dropped to 65 I was SO COLD.
These are perfect (including the length!).
thank you!!! i had the canvas clyde overalls from a sample sale and really liked them, but they were too big once they stretched, so i sold them. ugh. story of my life…
i am dying to hear more about your ilana kohn coveralls! i find them very appealing, but i have no idea what size to try. please report back when you get them.
are you in north texas? i have been FREEZING here the last few days, even yesterday was pushing it with the linen LOL, until it warms up and stays warm (with sunshine) i stay pretty cold. i would have been too cold in a linen dress for sure 🙂
I’m in Denton! Yesterday, when I went to teach my afternoon class, it was 70 degrees, and when I finished teaching, three hours later, it had dropped at least 10 degrees, with a nasty wind making it feel even colder. Yikes.
Those Ilana Kohn coveralls can’t get here fast enough. I’ve been stalking the brand for more than a year now. Based on the advice from the store, I ordered a medium (I’m 5’4″, with a 37″ bust, 30″ waist, and 40″ hips–basically an 8 in ES). We’ll see. I’m worried it’s going to be too big.
I just got a Clyde jumpsuit in the new cotton canvas. I’ve worn and washed it a few times already and I can’t say I’ve noticed that it has stretched at all.
maybe this new canvas is different from the sample sale canvas? i remember that it seemed to stretch a lot. and the rise/torso was a little odd on me too…how is it for sitting, etc.? like when you go to sit down do you almost choke yourself? LOL – that’s what happened to me a few times until i remembered to be more careful.
I have a pair of the sample sale overalls too (I bought them from someone on selltradees last year). I think mine have stretched a little but, honestly, that has helped with the rise and the whole sitting-down-choking-myself issue.
oh, we’re right around the corner from each other (i’m in carrollton), i’d love to meet sometime!!
we’re almost the same measurements, but i find the 8 in ES sort of misleading – my clyde culottes are size 8 but i am pretty sure i could wear the 6 too, although they’d be harder to get over my hips. my clyde work pants were size 6 and my cecilias were size 6 too and both of those were too big on me this year. ugh sizing……it’s so hard with indie designers!!
I would love to meet! And, I definitely agree about the ES sizing. I have a pair of Clyde culottes in an 8 regular (I wanted them to hit lower on my ankle, so I got the regular instead of the short). I keep wondering if I should have bought a 6 regular or even a 6 tall. But, I also have a pair of Cecelias, and I think I should have gone up to a 10 in those; although they fit, I worry that they look too tight, especially on my tush. So confusing.
I love Ilana Kohn overalls and think they are absolutely worth the price. I’m never disappointed when i get my pieces and live in her linen in the summer which is lighter than ES so better for hot hot weather. Hope you love the “Tuck” overalls- I have my eye on that one as well!
Misa, the Tuck coveralls just arrived, and I’m wearing them right now! The denim is so soft, the fit really cute. Because I’m not exactly tall, I’m going to have to shorten them about an inch at the bottom. But, other than that, they’re are perfect. I feel like a high-fashion garage mechanic. 🙂
Nope, nope, no choking lol. I never saw the old/sample sale canvas but a friend of mine had a piece and she compared it to a fire hose. I have three pieces in the new cotton canvas (trench, flos, and jumpsuit) and none of them have changed in fit since I got them. My love for the Clyde jumpsuit is pure, although I do think the sizing runs big in the canvas, I could have sized down. It’s wide under the arms because I have no boobs but you can’t tell when I’m wearing it.
I’d be curious if they work for you as well. I’ve always eyed her jumpsuits and saw a few on sale but I was concerned on whether the chest would be too small for me (38″). Her jumpsuits are a very different shape/style from what I currently have, would be a nice change of pace.
These are cute on you & I love the dark indigo color! I have one linen jumpsuit (Only Child) and it is one of my favorite items to wear (especially) in hot weather. I tend to take the whole thing off when I go to the bathroom (assuming there is a hook to hang it). It is easier for me to hold the leg up while I step out of it so it doesn’t go on the floor (vs. trying to hold both pant legs up while sitting).
And btw these look great on you. 😉
I hardly ever comment, but I think these are really cute on you!
I was big into the overall trend in the early/mid 90’s and I’m feeling too old for them this time around (which is not true, just my own paranoia).
Sweet! They are the ABSOLUTE PERFECT length for you, but I think for someone with a longer leg length they would be weirdly short. I just don’t like crops that end up just below the knee, or even at the calf, unless they are much more voluminous. Too much like 70s culottes, which I didn’t even like at the time. Someone with a shorter leg length could, of course, hem these up.
Yay. I am so happy you got these. They look great on you. I have worn mine twice on our trip to SoCal this week. They are so comfy and I got many compliments (not that I care these days, lol).
