It’s no secret that I think about clothes and what I wear A LOT. More than most. Definitely more than anyone I know.
I don’t spend so much time thinking about getting dressed because I “have nothing better to do” or I’m bored, or that I don’t have kids that I could “better” focus my attention on. I think about clothes because I want to. I like getting dressed and wearing interesting things. I love trying new things. I like to experiment with silhouettes. Granted, I experiment a lot, and end up selling or returning a lot, but that’s part of the cycle (and the fun) for me. No person or item of clothing is harmed in the process.
Maybe this is my “hobby,” but it’s also my job. I have never, and will never, apologize for loving clothes, fashion, personal style, or any such perceived-as-frivolous pursuit. I mean, people love and spend a lot of time thinking about sports, something which I couldn’t care less about, and they’re not berated for it.
Not that I’ve been berated for it, but being me, I often feel a tinge of “should” or “shouldn’t” when it comes to what I write about, what I do, and what I wear. I’ve always struggled with that external/internal pressure.
Anyway, I love that I write about what I’m wearing every day, and I love that it resonates with so many of you. Of course it’s not all about the clothes, or shopping, it’s about life and moving through it wearing things I love and that make me feel more like Grechen, whoever she happens to be at the moment.
But onto this outfit LOL
I wear this mostly at home, because as Jen said in the comments once, it does make me feel/look a little like a toddler 😉
And I wish it was a little longer on me; the length is just off somehow.
But it’s wonderful for wearing at home, which is where I spend most of my time, since I do work here. The pockets come in handy for moving my phone and sparkling waters up and down stairs. And it’s really easy to zip in and out of for the bathroom.
I used to feel guilty for wearing such “nice” or expensive things at home, but I no longer do. It is what it is.
What is your favorite thing to wear at home? Is it something that’s surprised you?
Happy Thursday!!
“I have never, and will never, apologize for loving clothes, fashion, personal style, or any such perceived-as-frivolous pursuit.” Yes!! I used to be super self counscious about my love of clothes/fashion/personal style and I’ve recently decided to stop worrying if it is frivolous or silly. I love it and that’s all that matters!
While I love clothes, what I typically wear around the house is t-shirts and no pants.
I love reading your updates! It’s nice to see someone I can resonate with when it comes to CLOTHES. I always feel guilty about buying something new (which I do frequently) because I don’t want to be a ‘slave to consumerism’. It is difficult finding the balance between wanting and needing something. So, thank you for revealing your feelings about the matter!
On a side note, how do you manage your expenses when it comes to buying nice clothes? Do you set up a monthly ‘spending fund’? Do you buy when you feel like it? I tend to be more on the latter side which runs me into trouble! I would love to hear how you manage your lifestyle and see how I could apply that to myself too.
SO MANY QUESTIONS – BUT, do you ever purchase non-sustainable/mass-market clothing say like Target or Madewell.?
I freely admit I’m a slob at home! Typically, my old cotton knit dresses become lounging wear when they’re no longer pretty enough to go outside the house. And then I get cooking oil or chlorophyll on them (watering those dang tomatoes two or three times a day….). But they cover me up in case the UPS driver shows up 😉 In the winter, leggings and a tee.
I love to think about, watch, read about fashion. Me – not so “fashiony” myself. Some days I try. I do care what I look like. But I don’t like change so much….
Don’t apologise for thinking/writing about what you’re thinking/writing about! It’s why we are all here after all. I think most of us have a load of twaddle floating around in our minds most of the day anyway….
I have this same jumpsuit and so far have worn it as you are here as it has been so hot but am looking forward to wearing it as the weather cools too. I took the hem down as far as I could and bound the edge on the inside – I am taller than you and it was at an awkward length on me before.
Grechen, you look really chic in this outfit and it’s not toddler-like at all! You could definitely wear it out and look great. And I have never been a shorts person, either, besides around the house. But this year, I bought a pair of longer Patagonia shorts, and I’ve been wearing them with UZI NYC tops to run errands and walk my dog.
Why would you not wear this outside of your house? I don’t get how this makes you look like a toddler. I think it looks really cute and comfortable on you. The one thing I stopped doing was wearing certain clothes only for occasions out of the house. Now I wear all my clothes no matter if I’m home or out.
I love this post.
Thank you for writing it.
I feel the exact same way.
I don’t have any one particular item I like to wear around the house. It just depends on what I’m doing. If it’s house work, then I wear jeans or an old J Crew sweatshirt. If I’m just lounging around, I’ll throw on a pair of pants – usually my YY baggy ones and a loose top of some sort. This summer I’ve worn my nice linen pants a lot on the weekends. I like that I’m getting away from wearing jeans all the time and I am wearing pants on the weekends that I normally wear at work because they are comfortable. I only really wear jeans for cleaning or yard work (or today’s company event outside where I was running around a lot and getting dirty). I used to always be that person who just wore jeans and a tee and I wanted to get away from that. Now, I’m glad I can open my wardrobe and pick out something nice to wear that’s comfortable and me no matter what day of the week it is.
Oh and I know you’ll get a kick out of this – I just bought another pair of pants. Some Y’s were on sale at Totokaelo with an extra discount so I got them for less than $200 – I couldn’t help it!
I do wear different things inside and outside, because: 1. I keep my lovely climate controlled house comfortable, whereas the outside weather where I live dictates specialized clothing much of the year and, 2. I can’t wear leggings as pants to the office ;( . On the other hand, the clothes I wear to bed are basically the clothes I wear around the house/yard/neighbourhood, so that’s something!
AHHH!!! i was just on totokaelo yesterday also and got sucked into the new arrivals unfortunately. i STILL WANT a sarouel skirt – this one – and all the pants basically. which pants did you get??
Grechen, you have exquisite taste! I have been coveting Yokomoto since my teens: from a distance….given the price ;(
I bought the last one, so it’s not on the site anymore, but I’d had the tapered gabardine pants on my wishlist for a long time. Here’s a photo of them from my pinterest account: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/189291990573902634/
I wanted a straight leg black pant that was a good average length for me. I love my Rachel Comey ones, but they are a bit more loose and I wanted something just a bit more fitted. I swear, I have such a problem with buying pants!
I can totally see you wearing that Sarouel skirt! It’s very much a Gretchen style/color. Out of the new selection at Totokaelo I’m tempted by the Y’s denim skirt, the v-neck dress that looks like a huge sweater, and the wool sarouel pants.
But I swear I’m done with pants now! (at least I keep telling myself that….) I’m onto SHOES. I really want more shoes. I’ve been looking at MOMA shoes a lot on YOOX.
Try looking at discounter sites like YOOX or even for used items on eBay or Rosen: https://rosen-store.com/collections/yohji-yamamoto. I have a lot of Yamamoto items now and all of them are second hand, but in great condition.
Waiting until sites like Totokaelo go on deep sales is a good time to buy as well.
I love this jumpsuit and think you could wear it anywhere you’d like 🙂
I feel the same way about clothes but do harbor a little guilt from time to time. I feel like my life would be simpler if I didn’t think about it so much.
I don’t wear pants at home much. I don’t think anyone in Hawaii does. It is too muggy. At home I mainly wear slip dresses (Free People) or spaghetti strap maxi jersey dresses (Lauren Moshi). If I wear shorts and a tank top, it is usually a boxer style in cotton or silk. If it is a particularly hot day (no AC), I might even just tie on a sarong. My home clothes are for everything at home, from cleaning house to sleeping. I don’t have separate pjs or nightgowns.
When I lived on Maui, it was a bit cooler as our home is on a mountain. So, in the winter I’d sometimes wear leggings and a long sleeve T or beat up sweater.
YAMAMOTO>>>>what did I type???? I blame the heat, I’m feeling quite faint lol. Thanks for the suggestions. Even marked down it’s a stretch for me, but I’ll have a look!
