At this point, it doesn’t really matter what I wear, I’m going to be hot when I’m outside and cold when I’m inside. So I might as well just wear whatever the hell I want – hence the jeans. But seriously. It’s so hot now that the second I step outside, I feel like my skin is melting off AND burning furiously at the same time. It’s very uncomfortable. But there’s nothing to do about it except. Well, nothing.
Anyway, this Madewell tunic is actually a dress – I wore it as a dress last year, but then I accidentally dried it, and now it’s a tunic. I suppose I could still wear it as a dress, but it’s a bit short for me to wear like that. It still gets a lot of use though – I wear it as a layer under cashmere in the winter, and like this or with leggings and an open cardigan in the spring/fall. Madewell does a version of this every spring, and I highly recommend it the next time it comes around. But if you’d rather wear it as a dress than a tunic, DO NOT ACCIDENTALLY DRY IT.
And now that my hair is down, and clean, and styled, I think I’m going to keep growing it out a bit more. Maybe just a few more inches? I think once it gets longer so it doesn’t do the annoying flip up thing at my shoulders I’ll like it a lot better. And it’s easy this way.
Ugh. Another 100-degree day. I’m beginning to wonder why we do this to ourselves. As I said before, I do appreciate the milder winters here, but this heat is killing me…But…Here we go! Happy Wednesday 🙂
I love that Madewell dress and it’s adorable as a tunic!
thank you farha!! i’ve missed your comments lately – hope all is well 🙂
You are so right on. It’s cold inside and hot outside. I’ve been in Austin a little over a year now and don’t think I’ll ever get used to the heat. My best solution was silk hanky dresses from DVF, but now I can’t manage them with my little one’s dirty hands.
wait, i just saw that you were in dallas at aritzia…next time you’re here please let me know! i’d love to meet you!! i’ve been in that store a few times, but i’ve never tried any of their stuff on – well, besides the acne jeans, or whatever. how do you find their stuff to fit? i like a lot of the styles. but also, since i don’t have experience with the quality, i’m hesitant to buy…
What a great outfit for our “faux fall” in Texas! The dress/tunic is perfect with those jeans. Could you also wear it with tights and boots or flats when it finally cools off? I find I can get away with slightly too short skirts if I’m wearing opaque tights and flats. When September rolls around, I start craving fall clothes, but it’s still 100 degrees here. I have finally settled on switching to warm weather styles in darker colors for this time of year, and continue to use layering as my A/C survival strategy. I spent some time over the weekend digging out a week’s worth of darker colored items in summer fabrics – a black linen sheath dress, some sleeveless tops and tees in fall colors and neutrals, and a couple of lightweight blazers that will hopefully transition well. Hopefully it won’t be long until it cools off enough to wear the new suede ankle boots I just bought!
yes, i will wear it with tights/leggings when it cools off…boots are another story, i’ve yet to find a pair that work with my thick calves. but i’m working on that!
i guess in september i start to just pretend it’s almost fall, even though it’s not even close. i didn’t even start getting REALLY hot until several weeks ago, it seemed like it was a relatively mild summer up until then. does that mean we’ll have a mild(er) winter? i would like a year-round range of 40’s to 70’s, thank you 🙂 that’s about all i can handle!!
Just popping in on this for some wide calf solidarity. I’m not sure how rustic you are willing to go, but Frye’s Veronica (slouch) boot is good for a wide calf. The regular is pretty roomy, but you can buy it in a wide calf version as well. I have a pair. I’m not sure I am actually a boots type, but wanted to experiment with that persona last year. My husband thinks the boots look great so I am hanging on to them for now…
I think this is a great look! And I do hate it when I accidentally dry my stuff. I’m really careful about my clothes, but every once in a while something slips by me and bad things happen. Like shrinkage. Ugh.
More Wide-calf solidarity, here! I’m making a note on these…Thanks, Christina!
I love your outfit, Grechen! For 100 degrees, you look damned cool! 😉 Good thing you shrunk that dress, cuz it’s perfect as a tunic! And the hair looks great.
Big congrats for the great mention in the WSJ in a very thoughtful article today online.
I think the trend of uniform and simplicity goes hand in hand with liberating women from silly fashion like mile high heels and unwearable penguin suits. I wear flats and casual clothes as a Tech executive and I am done in a few minutes in the morning. I love everlane silk shirt and my drape top from James Perse. I have a couple of oxford shirt (love Polo Raph Lauren outlet version) and being French, breton shirts (Saint James, Armor Lux, Petit Bateau) and I am done for work.
Everything else is not useful anymore, feels dated.
thanks mona!! was going to share that today; you beat me to it 🙂
that’s what it’s all about i think – liberation – freedom. with less stuff, and more meaningful stuff, comes freedom and a sense of just “knowing” what works and that you don’t have to think about it anymore…
Thanks ashley! i’ve done that so many times – now i try to separate things that can be dried from those that can’t, but i don’t manage it sometimes…and happy accidents like this happen!!
I have family in Dallas, so we’re there frequently! I’ll definitely let you know next time! This was my first time buying from Aritzia, but they seem to have great customer service. The staff was so friendly and offered to order in certain items I’ve been eyeing online. I’ve worn the dress once so far, but I kind of want to live in it. They have jogger pants in the same material, and for $55, I think I’m going to make the jump. I always tend to go for stretchy items, so for me, they fit pretty true to size. It looks like they sell out of items quickly, so I would recommend not hesitating if you want something. I’ll keep you updated on the quality, but it seems substantial so far!
