I don’t know why I thought to pull out my Repetto flats yesterday (via Instagram); I haven’t worn them in years. Actually, yes, I sort of wanted to try and balance out the extreme slouchiness of my outfit with something “delicate” and these were the only way I could think of to do that; I don’t have any other very “ladylike” shoes. It was SUCH a beautiful day yesterday, so my feet were perfectly comfortable (not cold), although the sweater turned out to be a bit warm for sunny and mid-60’s.
I used to have 4 pairs of Repetto bb flats (as they used to be called, now they are cendrillion) and sold all but this black perforated pair. I wore three of the pairs quite frequently for a couple of years; but they’ve not really been “my style” or felt like me for several years. Honestly, I can’t imagine how they ever were. So much has changed…
Exactly how much of that change is external – I’m inevitably influenced by what looks and appears to be “modern” and current, what is reflected in the trends of the day – and how much is internal, is interesting to think about. I don’t know that I can discern which has more impact, although I’m inclined to say that I believe my style is heavily influenced by what’s “in style” at the moment; I LIKE to keep up to date. At the same time, I wonder if that’s because the minimal, clean, easy styles that are so “popular” now are also just my style?
Ah well, I’m not going to think much about it, because it certainly doesn’t matter. I know my style has changed in the nearly twelve years I’ve been writing about it. Absolutely, I have changed. I feel as if I’m coming into myself now, finally, but I am also not naive enough to believe that this is it, that I have found my style and now I am finished. No, no…
(here’s an outfit from January 2010, with my “nude” repetto flats)
After your clog post I ordered some Sven clogs online. I wore them around the house last night. I think I’m going to really like them, and I think they were custom made for me, which is exciting! Thanks for the tip. These are my first non-Dansko clogs.
HI Grechen – I think you look so cute with these – enjoyed the (unexpected) change. And the (new) name of the Repetto shoes is cute – Cendrillon – the original Cinderella.
(Google just featured a doodleyesterday to commemorate the birthday of the fairy tale creator – Charles Perrault).
thank you chris! and i didn’t know that was what cendrillon meant, how lovely 🙂
it is quite unexpected, isn’t it??
Love that about the name! I don’t wear my ballet flats much anymore, either, Grechen. But I’m not getting rid of them because the style never really changes all that much over the years, and I’m SURE they’ll be “IN” again. I wear them if I want to “femme-up” an outfit or need something flat. But I could certainly see you in this outfit in loafers or your Robert Clergerie’s (love the sweater, but I’m having a hot flash just thinking about it!) for a more modern look.
I also cannot tell, where my style stops and the influence from trends starts. Have actually written a blog post about it today… And don’t feel bad, I think that knowing it is this way is far more than anyone else… And in return knowing when a trend will fit into your style and when it’s just a trend that won’t follow you.. At least I hope I am able to make that distinction..
