If you already follow Grechen’s Closet on Facebook, you’ve already seen my thoughts on the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, but in case you don’t, and for more in-depth analysis (LOL), here it is again.

As I mentioned on Friday, I don’t normally buy a lot during the anniversary sale, but I do always go to check it out in person, and I generally try to stock up on lingerie and/or activewear. I did come away with one pair of Hanky Panky thongs, which believe it or not I’d never tried before. I do have one pair of their low-rise thongs which I’m not crazy about (they’re a little TOO low), and I love their boyshorts, but I never tried a pair of the regular-rise thongs. Now that I have, I’m addicted, and I’m going to go back and get four more pairs for $52. I also got three pairs of Natori underwear (different styles) which were 3 for $36; they’re great for when you want full coverage.
I really wanted to end up with a pair of the Zella live-in leggings, because they’re CHEAP, but I really didn’t like them on me. I can’t pinpoint exactly what it was about them I didn’t like, but I really didn’t think they were worth even the $33 for me. I did get these Karma leggings, which I love, and wore Saturday to Pure Barre (I wanted to wear them again today, but I refrained…). They have a higher rise than I normally like, but I was really pleased with it during my workout. I got a size medium, which definitely fit, but they still sag a bit on me because of my short-waist. They’re very long on me, but that’s normal, I just fold them under. I also don’t feel like they’re completely opaque, but I ALWAYS wear full-coverage undies and/or long tank tops with my leggings for Pure Barre, so it’s not an issue for me. I totally recommend these, maybe not for regular wear, but for yoga/barre/pilates, they’re wonderful!
I tried on the Joie mariner pants and really wanted to love them, but I didn’t. On me anyway. The medium fit okay, but was very long on me, and snug on my calves. And the polyester was a bit thicker than I would have liked; I can’t imagine being very comfortable in them outside in 100+ degree heat. They also felt fine standing up, but not as comfortable when I sat down, so they wouldn’t have been great for traveling, which was kind of a reason I wanted to look at them. I liked the style/fit generally, they’re not as slouchy as my H&M ‘harem’ pants, but are still loose, so they would have been a good alternative, but they weren’t amazing enough for me to get them for $109. If the material had been different/thinner, I might have gotten them, but in this case, I think I’ll wait for this Splendid pair to go on sale. A reader on Facebook recommended this pair of similar pants by Wayf as an alternative to Joie, she said they fit her better and are half the price…I might go back and see if I can find a pair to try on.
Just to have something to try the Joie pants on with, I tried on the Joie ‘Malena B’ mixed media sweater and fell in LOVE. It’s so good, really. Although I would have sized down to a small, and been constantly scared of dripping something dark and oily on the front…I didn’t get it, because who needs cashmere/silk right now, but I’ll probably regret it later. Or maybe I’ll get it before the sale is over. Who knows…
Finally, because I have worn out my favorite pair of UGG Australia moccs (they’re nearly 5 years old), I REALLY REALLY need to replace them with these, but I just couldn’t do it. Again, it’s because I can’t wear them RIGHT NOW; they’ll just be sitting in my closet in a box until December. But I need to get over that and just get them, they will be sold out when I finally do need them, or at least back at full price, and I’ll kick myself for not getting them for less than $100.
So that’s it, what I came home with from the Nordstrom anniversary sale, and what I’m going back for. What have you bought? What are you still looking at?
For some reason, I am always tempted by the super duper jump Creme de Corps they offer at the Anniversary Sale. I am perfectly happy with drugstore lotions and can’t even imagine using $75 worth of lotion, but it just seems SO luxurious 🙂 Like, who is this fancy lady buying vats of Kiehl’s?

haha! i LOVE creme de corps, but have a hard time justifying it. i’m happy with aveeno body lotion, it seems to work fine and i can get my huge vats of that at costco 😉
I picked up a pair of Frye Melissa boots (extended calf), but I’m terrified they are going to fit me! I ordered them at work, thinking that my calf size would work, but measuring later on showed they’d be too big…
So, we’ll see. (I was hoping to find an amazing leather jacket, but no dice, yet!)
oh! i hope they work. i’ve NEVER been able to find a pair of boots to fit my calves. they are VERY large. anyway, i think i’ve given up completely and i just don’t try anymore. let me know how the fryes worked for you. fingers crossed!!
it’s tough to find THE PERFECT leather jacket (at the perfect price). i like them in theory, but i have one and never, ever wear it. i prefer sweaters or cardigans i guess…
I picked up the other Ugg flats — the smoking slipper style with tiny studs. They’re really cute, and I know I’ll love putting them on in the winter.
I also got the Via Spiga wedge boots that I’m still on the fence about. I REALLY REALLY wanted the gorgeous Cole Haan heeled boots, but I have the opposite issue as you — strangely thin calves — and the shaft was too wide on those.
oh! i was looking at those stud flats too, how is the sizing? did you take your normal size? i think i’d be happier with those than the moccs, honestly.
I went two weeks ago because I’m really anxious for fall to come. I don’t necessarily want summer to end but I want to wear sweaters and boots again. It was crazy hot and I felt ridiculous trying on so many leather pieces but I’m already thinking ahead to what I want in my fall/winter wardrobe. So I bought a green skater skirt, a leather jacket and those DV by Dolce Vita ankle boots you posted on Pinterest but in black. I spent more than I had anticipated because of that leather jacket but I love everything and can’t wait to wear them which is the goal I’m aiming for when I buy things these days.
I’m between a 9.5 and a 10 and I went with the smaller size. They were snug, but since they’re suede I know they’ll stretch a little bit. Oh, and they look just like these Rebecca Minkoffs! http://www.shopbop.com/alvin-too-studded-flat-loafter/vp/v=1/1503850712.htm?fm=search-viewall-shopbysize
i love that! me too – i want to REALLY REALLY love everything in my closet. i think it’s important…
I want TOO much, and that’s the problem, and half of it isn’t even on sale! So, this blouse by Vince: http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/vince-sheer-silk-blouse/3506279?origin=shoppingbag
Baggu leather drawstring bag: http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/baggu-drawstring-purse/3365606?origin=shoppingbag
Kendra Scott arrowhead earrings:http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/kendra-scott-skylar-spear-statement-earrings/3342355?origin=shoppingbag

And this Michael Kors watch, which is really the only NEED that I have: http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/michael-kors-darci-crystal-bezel-bracelet-watch-39mm/3498759?origin=saveforlater
And that’s just the beginning…;-)
that’s my problem too…i want a lot (still want those joie pants and that joie sweater), but i can’t bring myself to buy any of it. which is good i guess…because i certainly don’t need it.
you KNOW i love that little baggu, but it’s so small 😉 seems a bit expensive for what it is also.
I’m glad you pointed that out (re: Baggu drawstring bag) because I probably wouldn’t have paid any attention to the size. I am in love with drawstring leather bags. Might have to spring for one for Fall!
i love the shape of drawstring bucket bags also, but they always end up being so impractical for me. the baggu one is so cute, but it’ll go on sale 😉 would be worth it for less than $100…
