It’s that time again…Black Friday, Cyber Monday, yadda yadda yadda. Oh, and it’s also Thanksgiving here in the US. Lest we forget.
I love Thanksgiving; it’s my favorite holiday because it’s centered so much around family. We alternate spending it with my step-son each year, and this year he’ll be with us, as will my dad and step-mom. I love hosting family, but it’ll be quite the challenge in our small-ish place.
Thanksgiving week/Black Friday & Cyber Monday is also my busiest time of the year given all the sales and shopping opportunities. I try not to get sucked into all the consumerism, but given that my favorite places always do sales/coupons this time of year, I try to save up some so I can shop them. Not going into too many specifics here, but Net-a-Porter always starts their major sale next week, and Melissa Joy Manning usually offers a code, as does nearly every other place we love to shop, hint hint.
I’ll be updating codes and sales all next week on Grechen’s Codes (take a look at last years codes/sales now to get an idea of what was offered) starting on Monday, but you don’t really even need to wait, there are some really good deals and sales on now (and you get first dibs…)
Next week I’m going to be posting sales and coupons from my favorite sustainable shopping sites, independent designers, partners, and others, but if you come across any I haven’t mentioned, please feel free to leave a comment, or send me an email so I can include them.
Below are some of my favorite sale picks right now from Rag & Bone, Alexander Wang, Skinstore, Saks, Journelle & Shoescribe (on sale but still splurgy Robert Clergerie…). Also, Beklina is offering 20% off with code rainbow20 and RMS beauty is offering 20% off TODAY only with code GREENFRIDAY. Free People is offering 20% off orders over $200 tonight between 6-10 PM EST.
Oh, and if you haven’t already signed up for Garmentory, do it now, and get your $20 credit via my referral link (I’ll also earn $20 when you buy), because I have it under good authority they’ll be doing something special for Cyber Monday…
Happy (regular) Friday!! Hope you have a wonderful weekend and fun plans for next week with family!!

I’m from the UK, for the first time last year several stores participated in Black Friday over here. As a nation we were stunned at the result. Violence, grasping competitive greed and more violence, people got hurt and property was damaged. Our media reported that much worse instances occur every year in the USA.
If a retailer is offering you 20% plus, off, it’s because they are overcharging you by that much (and MORE) for the rest of the year. And, of course even on Black Friday retailers are still making a sizeable profit. Some retailers here have already announced they will not be participating in Black Friday this year (though by no means all!). The insanity of it is, that exactly the same kind of reductions were on offer previously, but staggered over several weeks instead of concentrated in one chaotic day.
4 thoughts come to mind, minimalism, sustainability, true cost and that no-one needs to ‘survive’ shopping.
On Black Friday I’ve decided not to shop (not even for groceries) – I hope to meet with some friends, to have an indulgent late lunch and then go to see a play or some live music. I appreciate that Black Friday is an American tradition, but it seems so STRESSFUL. I’m reading Gretchen’s Closet just like everybody else and probably with similar interests. But just because everyone else is up for Black Friday, doesn’t seem like a good enough reason to put myself through something similar. I really don’t need any item of clothing or gift that much.
Wishing you all a positively splendid Thanksgiving!!!!
ARGH!!! Too many wonderful things…Vince sweater, James Perse dress, Alexander Wang bags, booties…ALL calling my name. I’ve got to think about the holes in my wardrobe before I go bonkers with the sales.
Hey Gretchen, I fell in love with a JP cardigan on vacation. Looks like it’s full price everywhere as it’s a new item. Do you think I can expect to find a code for new items this time of year? It’s the fleece wool open cardigan/jacket in cement. Thanks! 🙂
this one?? love that so much…
it won’t go on sale until later in the year since it’s so new, but maybe it’ll pop up somewhere with a code next week? i’ll keep my eye out.
Grechen, just saw you responded to this–thank you! Yes, that is the one. LOVE it! I probably wouldn’t have fallen in love with it just seeing it online, but seeing it in person sealed the deal. I need it. Or something like that, lol. The best “deal” so far is I can get it for 10% off at Revolve with the code “tulip”. I’m guessing I should hold out for a better deal?
i would hold out, i’m pretty certain it will end up on sale before the end of the year. maybe 75%?? 😉
perhaps nordstrom will be the first to do markdowns…
**i meant I’m 75% sure that it’ll go on sale before the end of the year or at least in January. Not 75% off LOL
