Madewell pre-fall is here (I hope you can view that page, it’s a link I got via email), I’m not terribly impressed. First, I’m overwhelmed by the layering. Which is weird to even admit, because I’m ALL about layering. But there’s a limit, and I’m pretty sure Madewell crossed it.
I usually devour Madewell’s lookbooks, and want a lot from them every season. But based on this one, I don’t see anything very tempting, or unique. They certainly didn’t go out of their way to really showcase the items, or make them look wearable at all – in my opinion. Everything is 90’s throwback – grunge to the extreme, and I’m not feeling it. Which is good, because I’m minimizing my closet anyway…
But speaking of Madewell, they’re offering 30% off select items this weekend with code KEEPITCOOL, and there ARE some great things to choose from…including this Skargorn tee I have and love (wearing now, actually!), and several pairs of Swedish Hasbeens sandals:

Layering haphazardly like this… it just doesn’t work for me. When it looks bad on the models, you know that a regular person trying this will look like a bag lady. I don’t think there are too many layers here, just too many incongruous/competing colors, prints, textures, and silhouettes. I like the way you layer, on the other hand–it always feels cohesive.
so true cara – this type of layering is just all over the place. it seems like they’re trying much too hard! and the colors/patterns…i’m not much into color/pattern anyway, but still. this is A LOT.
Ha, my first thought was that it looked very 90’s / grunge as well! I actually kind of like the aesthetic (or at least the idea of it), but this is the first time I’ve looked at one of their collections and haven’t seen anything that I’d personally want to wear.
I find it funny that the looks I like the best are for pieces I wouldn’t ever wear personally (eg the military jumpsuit).
yes. i do like the jumpsuit in theory, but they’re a PITA to actually wear. they do look sorta cute though…
exactly.
i don’t mind 90’s grunge so much, but not this “done up” i guess. oversized plaid shirt with leather pants – fine, but so many colors, patterns and shapes? no thanks 🙂
It’s ok. Layering makes me look chunky though.
Love the Madwell Suzanne sandals ~ I am a fool for shoes with wood soles 😉

I do like Armor Lux (original) not with writing in fake French. I bought this shirt at Westerlind owned Armox Lux shop in NYC and it is super cute. maybe I should look at the sale instead of thinking about more Steven Alan items from the great sample sale 🙂
yeah..i’m staying far away from steven alan – i just can’t do final sale from there, i’m not sure how anything fits. anyway, there’s nothing i really “need” ATM
