Look! A James Perse sale! It’s not linked to from the site yet, but here’s your early access link, and your exclusive free shipping code (no minimum order!): GRCHNNEWYR15.
I will admit, I’m a little disappointed, and not, at the same time, that a few other things aren’t included in the sale (like cashmere leggings, slouchy sweatpants, more sweaters), but it’s still a good one, most items are marked down even more since the Thanksgiving sale (which, honestly, is also a little frustrating). And anyway, I wasn’t planning on buying new clothes for a while, remember? I can’t say I’m not tempted by a few things though, especially this striped cotton/cashmere dress I tried on when it arrived in the store. But I also vowed no stripes. Hmm.
James Perse cotton cashmere boatneck dress | $149
James Perse gauze shirt dress | $59 (I got this in size 2 during the last sale, review/pics here)
James Perse cotton/cashmere tank dress | $99 (highly recommend, take your true size, it stretches/gives)
James Perse fleece military coat | $179
More great buys:
James Perse cotton/cashmere skinny crew | $69 (these are really great for layering)
James Perse casual t-shirt | $30 (my favorite t-shirt EVER.)
James Perse slub side panel shirt | $89 (so flattering, stands up to a lot of wear)
James Perse cashmere tunic | $149 (I tried this on, it’s long, and cozy, and lightweight – needs to be layered for warmth)
James Perse cotton/cashmere dress | $99 (the one I mentioned above, on me here)
During the last sale, I also bought the cashmere short sleeve tee (review & pics), and the Yosemite hoodie & yoga leggings (review & pics), click the links for reviews on those, and read through the comments on this post from the Thanksgiving sale for fit/style advice from readers.
As always, all sales are final with this sale/code, so please ask questions if you have any. And if you bought anything during the last sale, please leave feedback on fit, etc., in the comments – help your fellow JP addicts out…
What are you buying during this sale? Anything?
I’ve been coveting the cotton cashmere boatneck dress and the rib polo, but with final sale and not being able to try either one on, I am probably going to pass. In some ways I’d rather pay more with the option to return if it’s not great at this point.
That gauze shirt dress is calling my name! [Un]Fortunately the Quarry color is all sold out in the 0, so my budget is safe – for now.
(And I just wanted to say – I appreciate your budget posts, and general upfrontness with money-talk, as I’m in the middle of trying to learn proper budgeting and paying off debt, but am too easily temped to spend, spend, spend…)
true – anyway, i thought you banned yourself from buying final sale?? 😉
i agree in general with the idea of paying more for the opportunity to be able to send it back, but for JP, i don’t mind. but then again, i’m able to try nearly everything i want to on before i buy anyway. if i haven’t, i don’t normally buy it. which is different from what i used to do – i used to just buy buy buy and even if it didn’t work, i tried to make it work for as long as possible!
thanks katy – and yes, good for you, or not, that the dress is sold out 😉
although…if you do still want it sometimes things show up at an outlet for the same price, or cheaper, especially during a holiday weekend. might be worth a call. but i don’t mean to enable….
Does the cotton cashmere boat neck dress fit like the long tank dress? I took my normal size in the latter, but wonder if I should size up for a more comfortable look in the boat neck.
Do you have Vintage Fleece sweatshirt? I’ve been eyeing it for months now. Still can’t bring myself to spend this much but so hard to find a well-structured, 100% cotton sweatshirt these days. Does this one stretch easily? Is it sort of cropped? Thanks!
i have not tried on the solid cotton/cashmere dress, only the striped. the striped dress is much more fitted, since it has more cotton in it. i guess it depends on your chest size maybe? i would take my normal size in the boatneck dress after trying on the tank dress in my size…mostly because i get concerned about the arms/chest, since i’m so much smaller up top than my hips… but if you’re opposite, maybe sizing up is a good idea.
sorry, that doesn’t sound like much help at all!! i guess my inclination would be to NOT size up.
yes, i have a gray one, in size 2.
i love it, have found it really comfortable, and it is sort of cropped on me, it comes to right to the top of my hips, which isn’t really cropped, but it shorter than a lot of tops are on me. the only thing i find frustrating about it sometimes is the 3/4 length sleeves. it makes it good for spring and warmer weather, also good for layering (as i did here), but definitely sometimes i wish it had longer sleeves. (the men’s version is good for that BTW). it’s a very nice, flattering fit – not oversized at all
Grechen what size do you wear in the cotton gauze shirtdress? And I can’t seem to find a way to search your blog–is there a search box? Thanks! 🙂
Oops I just found the post where you wore the shirtdress–size 2? I’m guessing I want size 1. Do you know what color Quarry is? Is it actually gray or lavender?
quarry is more gray than lavender, but it does have hints – it’s really nice actually, it’s what i wanted originally, and am still tempted to get it..
yes, i have a size 2, and it’s a great fit. a little roomy up top, but fits my hips/etc., better than way.
Thanks! Is there still room in the hips? I think a size 2 would be too baggy on top but I can’t risk having the hips be fitted. I asked the live chat (didn’t realize JP had that!) but they don’t have garment measurements.
there’s a little room in the hips, but i wouldn’t want to size down. it really fits me very well, there’s not too much extra up top, and it does stretch a little with wear. if you’re smaller than me, you would probably do fine with a size 1, but i personally wouldn’t want to size down – i always like a little extra room in the hips if i can get it…not too much…but enough 🙂
I snagged the cotton gauze shirtdress in size 3 in quarry and white! Thank you, Gretchen! The price was much better than the first sale, too. Thank you for the free shipping code, too!
I’m not sure about how I”ll feel about the quarry color (would have preferred black, but there was no size 3 left). Gray can be SO tricky for me but the price was low enough that I think I can re-sell it if I don’t like it. I have a James Perse side panel shirt in a very nice gray — I’m thinking this might be similar. Quarry is supposed to have a hint of lavender/purple — I hope so — I can’t wear brown-toned grays. Gretchen — did you say it’s more gray than purple?
Also, I did a live chat with one of the stylists at James Perse, who said that if my items didn’t fit that I could exchange them, even with the final sale — all I’ll need to do is ask for her. (I took a screen shot of the transcription of the conversation in case I need proof!) I was surprised and happy that she offered exchanging — it really helps with my final sale phobia.
I have high hopes for this dress! I”m 5’10” and LOVE longer layering pieces like this one. Can’t wait to try these on.
The striped dress looks amazing on you! I would like that or the tank dress perhaps.
Gretchen, I’ve been following you for a few months and haven’t commented until now. But I love your blog for its honesty and transparency. You really put yourself out there in a way that’s unusual and refreshing for a style blog, and I so appreciate that.
And of course I love your style! I’m a huge fan of James Perse (and Splendid, and Everlane, among others) and have realized, finally, at the advanced age of 51, that it’s worth spending money on casual clothes! So I’m thinking of buying a few things at the sale but am wondering about fit. For instance, the fleece dress: it looks relaxed, so maybe a 1 might be fine, but I’m wondering if I should get the 2. I’m usually a 4-6, veering toward 6, and I prefer a relaxed but not sloppy look if you know what I mean. Any advice you have would be appreciated! (I have the sweatshirt in a size 1 and wear it constantly.) Thank you!
i felt like it was a little more gray than purple, but it definitely has more of a purple undertone than brown…
that’s amazing that she said they’d be willing to offer an exchange…i hadn’t heard of that before, but then again, it’s possible no one has asked.
thank you for your comment!!
which fleece dress do you mean? i have the fleece sweatshirt dress and prefer my “normal” size 2 – although it’s a teeny bit snig when i first put it on, it does give a little with wear. i tried on the dolman sleeve fleece dress in the store and had to size up because it narrows so much to the knees, and honestly i didn’t like the shape very much on me, because of my pear-shaped body style it didn’t do me any favors. i have not tried on the hooded fleece dress, but i don’t think it narrows as much as the dolman sleeve one, so i would probably go for my true size in that. for reference, i take a size 29 in denim, and 2 in most james perse items, dresses, pants, tops…and small or medium in most splendid & everlane
i generally prefer to take my true JP size in most dresses because i’ve found that they give with wear, and the ones I have sized up in tend to look a little sloppy at the end of the day, while the others tend to hold their shape better.
I was thinking of the sweatshirt dress but also looking at the dolman and hoodie dress (not available in black in my size, alas). Thank you, your response is SO helpful! It sounds as if I should go with my usual size. And I was hesitating over the dolman dress too, so very good to hear your thoughts on it.
I am 5’6″ and 122 – pear shaped. I don’t like things too fitted (tight) and generally prefer a 2 so that its not too snug around the hips. In aloose fitting item I might size down. But for a finals sale I’d prefer a bit loose too a bit tight…..
I ordered the gauze shirtdress (quarry) in size 1. The live chat person recommended that size so I hope it fits comfortably! I will report back. 🙂
Thanks for the free shipping code! After hearing about James Perse for so long on your blog, I finally made my first purchase a couple of months ago: the wrap knee-length skirt in black and I love it! So soft and comfortable. Now I just bit the bullet on a dress I’ve been eyeing for a while: the wrap blouson dress in quarry. Fingers crossed it fits!
ah! fingers crossed!! please let us know how it turns out for you.
I just got notification that my order was canceled, no explanation whatsoever. 🙁 I guess they ran out of stock? Does this happen often that they cancel orders? I’m pretty disappointed.
i’ve never heard of that happening before…did you contact them? what did they say?
please let me know!!
that’s really disappointing.
I just called to ask and they said it was already sold out at the time I placed the order (4 days ago!) but their system didn’t update in time. I know this is a very minor issue and I should probably be glad that I can save money now but it’s still disappointing. Blargh.
