James Perse boxy gauze henley | mine is stag, size 2, available at JP, white is 25% off at Shopbop
Frame Le Garcon jeans | size 29, 25% off at Shopbop!!
Eileen Fisher shoes
Lizzie Fortunato jewels necklace (n/a)
3.1 Phillip Lim Ryder Satchel (large) | small version at Azalea for $671 with code GRECHEN25
Well…I had to find an alternate location for my outfit picture today, so please excuse the background! Just wanted to show you the boxy henley by James Perse in case anyone was looking at it at Shopbop (25% off with INTHEFAMILY14!!!!). Also, I don’t think I’ve photographed my Frame jeans very much, but I end up wearing them all the time; they’re incredibly comfortable, and I love the wash. They’re still in stock in all sizes at Shopbop, so if you’re tempted, order them now.
This is a VERY generous code from Shopbop – we haven’t seen one like this in a while, and of course I’m tempted to go crazy and buy everything I want, but I will NOT do it. I am finally getting to the point where my closet is (almost) where I want it to be. So buying a lot of pieces I would like to have, but don’t need, and probably won’t want in a few months would be complete wardrobe sabotage. So I’m not going to do it. After my closet inventory/assessment, I did determine that I needed a pair of “nice” black leather sandals – thong style – so I ordered these Rag & Bone sandals this morning with the code, but that’s it.
It’s going to take EVERYTHING I have not to place another order, especially since I sort of need to start replacing a lot of my tank tops that are too big on me. I particularly like the tucked ballet top by James Perse because it covers my bra…but I think I’ll be able to wait for sale + more discount for that one.
Here are my favorite James Perse pieces at Shopbop right now, and my thoughts on them – just in case you’ve been wondering about anything and waiting for this code to order. I also know that the James Perse outlet is having a sale this weekend and I’ll be posting the pdf as soon as I receive it, so if there’s anything old you’ve been wanting, it might be worth waiting for that.

Have you guys ordered anything from Shopbop yet? What?? Tempted by anything? Going to pass this time??
Hey! You look amazing! I can see why you wear those jeans all the time, they suit you really well.
And I’m joining you in no more purchases. For the rest of this quarter, in fact. Ooof.
I love those Rag & Bone sandals. Seriously tempting–great 70’s vibe but modern, and they look well-cushioned, which a lot of thong sandals are not.
I picked up a couple of basics from the ShopBop sale section–a pair of black coated jeans from Citizens of Humanity and a pair of ankle-strap low black suede wedges.
jen, i tried them on at the rag & bone store over the weekend, and was pretty impressed…it was between those and the joie ones that are nearly identical, but R&B had much more support and i appreciated that. and they look quite a bit more substantial; i want these babies to last forever!!
i tried to tell myself that if i got the joie sandals i could get another pair of shoes for around the same (and still stay in my budget) as the price of just the R&B sandals, but remembered that’s how i ended up with all the sandals that i’m now trying to get rid of!!!! i don’t need two pairs of sandals, i just need one. progress 😉
yes, this has got to be it for a while. unless a particular shirt i’ve been wanting shows up at the james perse outlet this weekend. THEN it will be it. i really want to save up money for fall shopping….
Grechen, I agree with Lisa, you look great in those jeans. Just a gentle reminder, I’d love a post about buying expensive jeans: pros & cons etc… I’m still stuck on “But I can buy jeans at Goodwill for under $20.” (Although I know that they’re not the same quality.) I’d appreciate your words of wisdom, before I take the retail plunge. Thanks!
I WISH we had a Rag & Bone store in NorCal–I can’t believe they don’t have on in SF. Nordstrom’s has started carrying more of their shoes this year, so it’s nice to see them in person.
Good choice on the sandals–I am being ruthless right now about anything that I have a slight doubt about, and have resisted all non-returnable purchases.
And I am on a no-more-purchases ban through June, at least.
I love henleys (my dresser drawers can attest to that fact…some with tags still on…????), so this is how I dress a lot of the time, with a cargo jacket thrown over it since it’s still chilly here. I love those jeans, but I haven’t had very good luck in finding ones online that actually FIT. I think we all have certain brands that fit each of us just right. I’m not sure I’ve found that special “one” yet. And the fit has to be perfect for me to justify the expense. I love the look of Frame and Mother denim, but I’ve never tried them on, so who knows if they’d fit?!?
I’m kind of looking at the Splendid thermal cardigan with a hood on Shopbop.com’s sale. But I’m not sure if I’d need an XL at size 14. Do you know, Grechen?
the one i have (that’s very old) is a m/l and i’m very comfortable in it; it’s not too big on me IMO. i think the XL would suit you fine, better to be larger than too small i always say, and you CAN dry it if you want to shrink it a bit…
it is VERY HARD for me to find jeans that fit me the way i want them to, so when i do, i usually just buy them, no matter how much they cost…and i’ll address this more when i respond to RJS’s request – next week!! – but i really do think denim is so personal. especially if you have a body that’s difficult to fit. i have acquired lots of pairs of jeans over the last several years, either after gaining weight or losing weight, but there are only a select few pairs – well, now 1 really (the frame pair) – that i’d need to save from a fire. i have been very very impressed with how my expensive jeans (goldsign) have held up over the years even though i can’t wear them anymore, so i don’t normally balk at spending $$ on jeans, but i also think that places like the gap, old navy, and loft have great options.
I look forward to the post next week! Maybe it’ll convince me to pay big bucks for jeans.
Since the shoes I really want aren’t offered at shopbop, I am not getting anything but I really like your jeans and the james perse items. My shoes are at saks and nordstroms – do you know if either will be offering a similar friends and family type code soon?
last year, saks did their friends and family (25% off) at the end of april…nordstrom never does F&F, just sales, and i’m not sure when their big sales are actually…but saks’ code should be coming up soon! what shoes are you looking at??
i don’t know that i’m necessarily convinced that EVERYONE should pay a lot of $$ for jeans…you know? i think if you can find jeans you love without spending a lot of money, then that’s great. i just can’t anymore. probably because i’m spoiled from trying my first high-end pair all those years ago 😉
happy passover, by the way. we are only doing a second seder tonight since my step-son just arrived. off to tend to the brisket 😉
Oh man… I have been sooo bad and haven’t even looked yet! I love how you marked each item with how it fit on you. Maybe I should take the plunge and get something James Perse. I have soo many black, grey and white tees it’s not even funny though. And I love the dresses, but I have one of those pesky B bellies, so every time I wear jersey dresses, I have to wear spanx. Which kind of defeats the purpose, no? Anyway… will have to check it out! 🙂
i wear spanx with most of my dresses/skirts…damn saddlebags 😉 and i sort of feel more comfortable when i wear spanx anyway. weirdly enough. i just feel like i’m not so “exposed” or whatever….sometimes if i layer cleverly, and wear a long-ish top over a dress/skirt i can get away without spanx, but yeah, they’re pretty much my best friend.
Saks F&F sale runs online 4/19-4/28 and in-store 4/21 through 4/28–just got my mailer today.
Grechen, This is a great look for you–love it! Very flattering and laid back, yet chic. I went a little crazy with the sale (placed two orders, oops), but basically I ordered a lot of jeans and some basic tops…planning to return most pieces, but also hoping that a few are winners. I’m putting together a travel wardrobe for this summer, and really needed a few good basics to get me through a month overseas. We’ll see what works out! I definitely took advantage of the sale, but don’t intend to keep much.
Just my two cents worth on Mother jeans…I really like them. They are super soft and stretchy (like my Goldsigns) and have a flattering fit. I like the high rise styles because I have a long torso.. I ordered a pair of the high waisted looker jeans in ankle length, and also a long pair that is more of a bell style. I have a feeing I’ll love them both!
A great fitting pair of good quality jeans will last forever, and look and feel amazing.. If you care for them well (i.e. skip the dryer) they really can last a very, very long time. If you wear jeans a lot, I think it’s really worth it. Will look forward to Grechens post!
Oy, I’m such a bad Jew! We weren’t invited to any Seders this year, so I decided to play hooky from the holiday. Don’t get me started about eating dry matzo.
The shoes I want for spring/summer are the Robert Clergerie Vicoleg. Wedge Oxford. They look really cute and hopefully are comfortable but they are expensive! I don’t have anything like them and they are they only item that I’m thinking of buying though other than some really inexpensive basics.
thanks for the info!
thanks Jen for the intel, that helps a lot!
oh….those were the ones i wanted to get this year!!! i love them so much, but always just try to get one or pairs of shoes a season and they didn’t make the cut this time. they’re so unique, but less me than a lot of his other styles. i just didn’t see myself wearing them as often as i’ll wear the two pairs i did get. this is the RC pair i would love to get this year, but i’m going to try and wait for it to go on sale. the dreslyn is also a good resource for RC – the other pair of sandals i wanted is on sale and additional % off, but still expensive…i need to just have a savings account for robert clergerie 😉
do you have other RC shoes? they are 10000000% worth the money. my oldest pair is 7-8 years old and still in wonderful shape. and even though his shoes are quite modern, they’re also timeless IMO. i think it’s time for an RC post 😉
oh! i would love to hear more about your travel wardrobe – a month sounds wonderful, and a bit of a challenge to pack for!!! please keep us updated 🙂
did you end up getting the price adjustment on the order you placed before the code started??
Lala, I appreciate your input. I’m just not used to jeans costing over $30. It must be a generational thing.
just found the black version of the vicoleg at the dreslyn – they’d be $284 after their 10% discount on sale items. not sure which color you wanted..i think the natural is more interesting, but the black is nice also…
You could be on to something there, RJS. I’m 53 and I feel the same way about high priced jeans. As though there’s some “secret code” that I just don’t get! ????
Those sandals by Rag and Bone are PERFECT!!!
My husband and I were invited to a Seder (it would’ve been my first!) at a good friend’s home, and I was so excited to be getting out and about…until I threw my back out on Saturday. It’s pretty bad.
RJS, a friend of mine who is Jewish posted his latest find: Chocolate covered Matzo!
Thanks, Lala! Those are ones I’m ver interested in and my eldest daughter’s BFF highly recommends them. However, she’s about 5’2″ and a size 0, so I’m not sure how they’d work for me!????
I can only assume that the “B” stands for beer or baby. ???? The last baby I had was 15 years ago…unless you count the “food baby” from a few nights ago. That’s why God invented Spanx, and I know she’s a woman!
thanks for the heads up on the black ones but i would rather have the raffia color since they are more summery. I have just one pair of robert clergerie shoes. I don’t remember the name but they are suede with a similar base as the vicoleg. I’ve had them about 3 years and have worn them a lot but not a ton since they for fall and winter. They are in great shape, even the suede doesn’t have any worn spots.
i agree – the raffia is so pretty…hope you get them!!!
Val, right! There’s a “code” that we can’t comprehend. BTW: I loathe matzo, so even if it’s chocolate covered I’ll “passover” it;).
I was bad. I ordered a bright pink Kate Spade bag that I’ve been eyeing as a possible summer work bag, and a bunch of maternity clothes. The maternity clothes are necessary, but of course I don’t NEED to be spending that kind of money on them. I justify by saying that I’ll buy a few key pieces that are more expensive, then fill in with Gap and Loft.
Even though I already did some significant damage, I’m getting tempted to go back for more. These Shopbop sales kill me.
I totally understand. Honestly, if I found a $30 pair of jeans that I loved and looked great, I’d be sold. I just seem to have a difficulty body type when it comes to jeans…though don’t we all, I guess!
I didn’t get a chance to call and didn’t make it a priority because I had a feeling the dress I ordered wouldn’t work out. It arrived today, and as I suspected, it’s just a bit too short in the waist. Oh well.
Very much looking forward to being away for a month, but it’s definitely a bit of a challenge as I’m planning to pack all of my two year old’s clothes in my suitcase as well. We will be in multiple cities and doing different kinds of things, so I really need to narrow down some core pieces that will work across the board. Wish me luck!
I splurged when I was pregnant and bought some Citizens of Humanity maternity jeans…they happened to fit me the best. They were expensive, but honestly the best pieces I bought while pregnant. I had them in heavy rotation and wore them pretty much daily. They held up really well and are folded up in a box waiting for next time…I figured the investment was worth it. I had a lot of luck with longer tops and tanks with cardigans…surprisingly didn’t have to buy too many maternity styles other than pants. Good luck!
I’m 5’8″, long torso, about 140 lbs. I am very slim through the waist with a curvy/muscular lower half. The Mother jeans are a great fit because they are so soft and stretchy…they hug the curves nicely. 🙂
Lala, so true! I loathe looking for jeans and bras. That’s probably why I rarely buy both, unless I’m forced to.
I do have a pair of 7FAM jeans from my first pregnancy that I loved, but they’re a long boot cut and can only be worn with heels. This time around I definitely need something I can wear flats with. I had a pair of cheaper Gap maternity jeans, but they stretched out horribly — and the last thing a pregnant woman needs is to feel sloppy!
