I just can’t with pants right now. Non-slouchy pants anyway 😉 So I’m going to wear more skirts and dresses. I like them better on me anyway, because they hide my thick legs (which I’m having an issue with right now. baby steps, right?), and I always feel more like me in a long dress or skirt. And honestly, it’s cold here, but I can generally go from the garage to wherever I’m going without having to be out in the elements too much, so I won’t freeze. (Ah, the joys of living in urban sprawl! *rolls eyes*)
This skirt is from last spring (OMG, my hair!!!), and something I was so excited about, but didn’t wear very often once I got my Eileen Fisher harem pants. They are completely different, but I always preferred the EF pants. Maybe it was the pockets? I love a skirt/dress with pockets. This type of skirt/pant is warmer in general than a skirt because it’s closed at the bottom, keeping some heat in, but like I said before, I don’t have to be out in the elements very much, so it’s not a big deal. And anyway, I’ve found that if my chest/neck is warm, I’m good. Also, with maxi dresses, it’s easy to wear tights underneath to create an extra layer of warmth, especially if you’re wearing boots – I’ll show you that later in the week with my new Lanston dress.
What do you think? Do you store your dresses & skirts for the winter? or find a way to make them work? How?
Love that look on you!!! You really make the slouchy harem thing work. I try to envision it on me, and, no…..
I wear dresses & skirts all winter long. Like you, I’m in the south, and like you – when it’s cold, I don’t usually have to be outside long (and I tend to know in advance when that would be, and I dress accordingly). I am a fan of tights and/or knee boots. I have actually even worn my ankle chelsea boots with a short skirt & tights. Once. Baby steps 🙂 I love love love a knee length sweater dress with a scarf, tights & boots. I feel super comfortable but I am also well dressed for work. (I work at a university, so casual but professional)
thanks kelly…i never thought i could make the slouchy/harem thing work either until i tried. hell, i’m not sure IF i actually pull it off most of the time, i just know i love it 😉
i’m definitely going to try wearing more shorter dresses/skirts & tights – the problem is that most of my shorter dresses & skirts are fitted, and i love the idea of wearing a more flowy skirt/dress in the winter. perhaps that should be on my shopping list!
Love that outfit! I especially love how the band of your white shirt mirrors the band of white on your sneaks. It keeps the outfit from being too monochrome. Was that intentional? (Do you sometimes find you don’t do things intentionally and then look at photos of your outfits and think, “Hey, that looks cool!”)
I think the harem look is a signature look for you, kind of like a uniform. Whenever I see harems, I think of you and how you’d wear them. So ya, I’d say you pull it off!
As for winter skirts and dresses, living in the frigid north, I put most of them away for the winter, except for fancy holiday parties. I have a Line wool/cashmere sweater dress that I only wear as a tunic over leggings, jeggings, or fleece-lined tights in the winter. Just one more reason to crave spring!
You look so awesome! I would totally try a harem skirt. I’m working my way up to harem pants…..
I wear dresses and skirts all winter. I usually put tights underneath them and then wear boots if it’s really cold. Since it was uber-freezing yesterday, I actually wore leggings under my dress. It was awesome. And like you, I don’t really have to brave the elements. I’m usually going from my heated house to my heated car to another heated location. It makes wardrobe choices so much easier!
I can’t wait to see how you style the Lanston dress. I love that dress! I don’t know if I could pull it off, though. The drawstring waist might just be stretched within an inch of it’s life! (Kind of defeats the whole purpose, don’t you think, when you don’t really need the drawstring?!?! 😉 )
I don’t really do skirts much in the winter out here since Montauk is so windy all the time, that my skirt is likely to pull a “Marilyn”…even a maxi. But I always wish I did when I see you in them. It’s one of those things with me…baby steps…
I love that skirt!
You are braver than me! I’m currently freezing and I can’t even think about wearing skirts or dresses right now! I have worn jeans for 5 days in a row to work! I just can’t bare the thought of only having tights between me and the elements on my way from the parking garage to work! I am that much of a winter wimp!
i usually am, i don’t know what’s gotten into me 😉 i just get tired of not wearing skirts/dresses i guess…
i would love to see you in a pair of harem pants cathy!!! you could totally pull them off.
yes, the wind is a problem, that’s why i gave up on “flowy” skirts and dresses in austin – at least when it’s not summer…
i feel like the dress runs a bit on the larger side actually, i think you could pull it off.
haha! i honestly didn’t think about the hem matching my sneakers…i just have to layer, and i like to break up colors (blacks & grays LOL) with white. i don’t think i could ever do a completely monochromatic look!!
i don’t think i’ve EVER seen another person wearing harem pants. my friend wears slouchy pants sometimes, but honestly, you don’t see a lot of boundary-pushing style here in texas. in fact, i make it a point to be as out-there as i can when i go to the ‘fancy’ shopping areas here, just to mix things up a bit. i WISH i saw more interesting style here, and you better believe if i saw another lady wearing harem pants i’d chase her to get a picture!!
sadly, style here is either uber-casual (like leggings as pants) or fashion blogger style (like courtney loves dallas – UGH) which i find really boring…
I’m not into harem, but you make the idea of a harem skirt very tempting. I love drapey stuff!
For some reason, I’m all for wearing dresses/skirts more so in the winter, maybe because I can throw on boots and I love wearing boots. I hate the tights situation though but it’s a necessary evil.
