Wearing/Shopping
The Correll Correll dress was supposed to going up on slowre today as part of the new arrivals, but as I was photographing it, I decided it deserved a modeling shot, and then I did NOT want to remove it, so I bought it for myself. I really try hard not to do that, but I had to in this case. I didn’t think that the color would work on me, but it really does. And the dress is so interesting and beautiful, I couldn’t resist. I am wearing a slip with it, and I would probably recommend that, it’s pretty sheer. The thing I love the most about it is that it’s not cut super-large like most designers are cutting things nowadays; the chest just fits (and I’m small), and the sleeves are “normal,” instead of raglan or dolman, helping the dress fit better, looking a little more put together and less like a sack. I’m not knocking dresses that look like sacks, by any means, but sometimes a girl wants a little shape…
Did you see that Black Crane FW/17 dropped at Mohawk yesterday? I’m sort of meh about everything so far (there’s still more coming)…which is unusual for me, most of the time I find one or two things I think I need. But I’m not complaining!! If you do see something you like, I recommend buying it now, and the returning it if you don’t like it – pieces have a tendency to sell out fast and sometimes are pretty hard to find afterwards.
I ordered some of the new Everlane cotton sweaters this week – Believe it or not, I do have one or two “holes” in my wardrobe, and one is for lightweight, drapey sweaters. I keep trying to find THE ONE, and fail. I had a wool one by Acne studios that I loved the style of, but not the color. Before seeking out another wool version I wanted to try Everlane’s cotton version; I ordered smalls and mediums in a couple styles. Stay tuned for a review!
And as you can see, I got one of their nylon fanny packs too. I actually wear one when I walk Dagny during the day because I normally wear dresses (or my caftan) at home that don’t have pockets and I need something to carry my phone, etc., in. But mine is sporty, and I thought I might like one that’s a little more “chic” and that I can adjust to wear as a sling if I want to, for traveling. Meh. This is a good, roomy fanny pack, and I love the dark green, but it might be a little too much for me. I like the nylon though, so I’d recommend checking out the new nylon pieces if you’re looking for an easy backpack or tote – they’re pretty good looking.
Reading/Watching
Leo and I are watching Ozark on Netflix and it’s just okay. The story goes like a shakespearean tragedy – like, what can POSSIBLY go wrong next – but I can sit and watch Jason Bateman for an hour, no matter the story…
Doing
I don’t really know…my sister is here for work and leaving Saturday afternoon, so I’ll have more time with her, but otherwise, no plans for the weekend. What about you?
I love the dress on you! Apparently even the L would not have fit me according to the measurements anyway.
Now because I am caught up in the fear that Black Crane will sell out I ordered two dresses from the FW17 collection just to see–the Bud dress in midnight and the Tulip dress in charcoal. But I’m not 100% sure they will work.
i was surprised at how “fitted” this dress is in the chest/shoulders…i’m really sorry it didn’t work out for you. but thanks for sending it to slowre 🙂
the way i look at black crane and buying things full price when they launch is i’m going to obsess over them anyway, might as well buy them ASAP to know if they even work for me or not, instead of obsessing for no reason….
i’ll be interested to hear your thoughts on both of those dresses!
“sometimes a girl wants a little shape . . .” Yep! That’s how I felt looking at that new Black Crane. Like, I know her stuff is boxy/drapey and I’ve liked it in the past, but damn, it just sort of jumped the shark for me this time. I’m a little over it all.
haha. yes. i thought the same about what i’ve seen so far.
I’ve been wanting a black peasant-y dress, but didn’t want a linen one like the poet’s dress in this summer’s BC collection. Really, this is the dress I want but I don’t want to pay $400+

oh yeah, i’ve been coveting that RA dress forever.
the black crane one is good – i do also think that things look different depending on how they’re styled – and i ALWAYS think they look BETTER on women who are shaped differently than typical online models. most of the time it’s when i see someone wearing a piece on instagram or IRL is when i start wanting it!
I love the bud dress! And also the balloon sleeve blouse. I’ve never worn Black Crane before but I’ve been tempted for quite a long time now. One piece I’m *really* interested in is the accordion dress from spring/summer – it’s now on sale on a bunch of sites. It’s the kind of thing that I think could either work really well for me (in a weird/edgy sort of way) or be so very, very wrong. A lot would depend on the length. At 5’3″ I can’t expect it to look the same on me as it does a 5’11” model, and I worry that it would swallow me up. Same with the length on the bud dress, and neither looks like it would be an easy hem job. It’s what ultimately prevents me from buying – not just Black Crane, but a lot of what I see online. Oh and I also love the square shirt Grechen was wearing the other day. The sleeves would probably be past my hands!
I recently found your blog, and I love it! I think the Ozma dress looks great on you, you can’t tell from the pic that it’s too tight. I’ve been debating the Ozma matador romper (my first jumper), but have not bought anything from them, and I’m really unsure on sizing. I tend to fall in between, so when it says “true to size”, I don’t find that very helpful. I’d love to hear more about the brand from you! To make matters slightly more complicated, I’m an American living out of the country, so I do most of my shopping by ordering ahead of a trip, and having it shipped to family or friends. That makes returns complicated…
hi kristina! welcome 🙂
i wanted the matador romper also, at first, but then decided on the cypress playsuit : http://grechenscloset.com/friday-follow-up-rompers-vitamin-c-toxic-clothing/ and have been really pleased with it. it fits me really well, especially through the hips, which is my problem area. after getting the linen slip dress, the problem is that the linen is cut on the bias and doesn’t give as much as it would otherwise, and it stretches out sort of weird. it’s very different linen from my eileen fisher or black crane linen pieces…
i think the best thing you can do is ask for measurements. what is your body shape? your proportions?
oh, another reason i went with the playsuit and the slip dress is that the straps are adjustable. i find that as a short person, being able to adjust rompers/dresses at the shoulders makes SO MUCH DIFFERENCE.
oh my gosh, the sleeves on that shirt are SO LONG ON ME. i have them rolled all the way up to the shoulder seam almost!!! i just love it though for a super lightweight layer. it’s so big on me, bigger than the wool/flannel one i have IMO.
that’s the thing with some of black crane, and other designers, the hem is often a point of interest, so you don’t want to disturb it, but it’s just way too long for us shorties! so frustrating…
I’ll be curious to read your reviews of Everlane’s cotton sweaters. I don’t like their wool, but a cotton sweater on a chilly day might be perfect in December. 😛 Also, I have the mini Destaye crossbody from FashionABLE as my dog walking purse. It’s the perfect size for your phone, keys, baggies, and ID, and it’s lightweight and cute. I also used it on vacation recently to take to the pool and beach. I just checked and it’s actually on sale now if you’re interested. Have a great weekend!
You look GREAT in both of these dresses! So different from one another; both so flattering and lovely!
did i try everlane’s wool? i don’t remember…yes, i think i did and also didn’t like it. i don’t have super high hopes, but then again, i don’t with everlane much lately, but it would be great if they worked out. perfect for december, yes 🙂
The coco dress is amazing on you! I love that color on you. It’s a nice break from darker shades especially in summer.
I looked at the Everlane cotton sweaters but again didn’t purchase. I’m finding their stuff too boxy and short generally. If the sweaters had a tiny bit of tapering at the waist I would have bit for sure. I love Everlane in theory and yet I buy almost nothing. I hadn’t bought anything in about 2 years until the day heel.
Love it! Like I do most things Raquel Allegra. And I’ll never get over the Eileen Fisher/Black Crane oversized way of dressing. To me, it’s comfortable, quality, and artistic all in one.
Grechen, cute dress, and so very unlike anything you’ve worn recently (or before, for that matter). And since I think that we should have fun with our clothes, Brava for trying something new! The slip dress, hat and (what I thought was a drapey sash around your hips!!!) is my favorite, tho. It really highlights your bod! 😉
I just got the small backpack from Everlane in the mustard and it is a dream. I love the zipper pulls so much!
So glad you got this correll/correll dress. I was very interested, but afraid of the colour, the price, the crew neck. It’s hard to send things back from Canada. Love it on YOU!
