Wearing/Buying
I wore these ES pants a few times this week, but after 3-4 wears I need to wash them to get them back “into shape.” They probably also need a little freshening up too, but mostly they start to look quite saggy in the back after so many wears.
And if you didn’t see in my post earlier this week, I ordered the silk Andy trousers in size medium, regular length with the gift provided by Elizabeth Suzann. I’m really excited about those. I also have the Linen florence pants in black on order, they should be shipping soon, but I’m conflicted about whether I’ll keep those.
I did also place an order from James Perse yesterday for the denim jacket (size 1) and the cotton textured workwear pant (size 27). They should arrive early next week so I’ll have a review for you as soon as I can get it up!
Finally, I mentioned that I ordered a smaller size of Girlfriend Collective leggings recently, but haven’t said much about them. They are really great and I highly recommend them. I had a medium pair of the high-rise regular length leggings and wore them once a week for about a year or more and they held up nicely. They started to fade a bit at the knees, but otherwise looked and performed as good as new, except they became too big for me. The size small, 3/4 length high-rise leggings are a wonderful fit on me, and full-length, which I love. I’d love to branch out to other colors, but I’m too chicken LOL. If you haven’t tried Girlfriend Collective leggings yet, I really recommend you do 🙂
Reading/Watching/Listening
REALLY REALLY REALLY loving the Overstory although I only get a chance to read at length on weekend mornings. It’s about trees, very generally, but our relationship with nature also. I didn’t know what to expect from it, but so far (I’m only about 20% in) it’s been very interesting and engaging.
I’ve been trying to listen to more podcasts lately instead of just NPR all the time. I already listen consistently to Sam Harris and Forever35, but I’ve also added in What Should I Read Next and listened to one episode of that, which prompted me to add a ton of books to my reading lists. I have Everything Happens in my library now and want to try that after recommendations from a few of you. I also listen to Tim Ferriss and Secular Buddhism when I remember. And James Altucher.
Oh, and I recently listened to the Heaven’s Gate podcast. Fascinating.
Who has other podcast suggestions?
And here’s the thing: I’ve been thinking of starting one myself. Ha, as if I need another thing to do. But it wouldn’t be related to fashion or style or shopping; I would love to talk with other women about navigating through middle age without children. We’ll see. Just a thought.
Doing
I will be working a lot this weekend and next week to clear out clearance items at Slowre and mark down a lot for sale (if you’re interested in anything in the clearance section now’s the time to buy, they will all be taken down this weekend/early next week). I’ll have new arrivals up on MONDAY next week since Wednesday is a holiday, and that will be it for new arrivals for two weeks since we’re going on vacation starting July 8th. yay!! vacation 🙂 I’m sooooo ready.
I hope you had a wonderful week and a relaxing/fulfilling weekend ahead 🙂
“I would love to talk with other women about navigating through middle age without children. ”
You are a gift to the world, Grechen. I would definitely be into that podcast.
I love the other colors of GC leggings but… visible crotch sweat. Is my problem.
Since it’s ok to talk about sweat here lol.
True crime podcasts are my absolute favorite and I listen to a LOT of them but I also enjoy
Safe For Work (formerly I Hate my Boss)
The Exam Room
Personality Hacker
How Did this Get Made
Ask Me Another
LOVE PODCASTS
I would totally love a podcast for middle age women without kids! As I’m approaching 40, I get more and more “subtle” hints that I’m running out of time to have kids. I love my life without kids, but other people make me crazy!
I’m on the Girlfriend Leggings site right now, and OMG they go all the way up to 3x!! Definitely trying these out…..
YES. that is my problem too. visible crotch sweat LOL
that is why i stick with BLACKEST black leggings.
how silly am i that i love ask me another but it’s one of those things i only listen to if i catch it on air. that, and wait wait don’t tell me – i don’t know why i have a hard time listening to them as podcasts?
thanks for the suggestions!
oh yes!! please try them and let me know what you think!! buy a pretty color too 🙂
oh my goodness, thank you kathleen 🙂
i will definitely let everyone know when it comes to fruition.
That outfit might be my favorite on you- that jacket is so great!
As for podcasts, I’m that podcast nerd. This is the cream of the crop, in no particular order, because they are all wonderful or I wouldn’t recommend.
–“Stuff You Should Know” is so lovely, funny, smart and sweet. I just think the best of those guys. I sometimes listen when I can’t sleep (not that it’s not interesting, but they have great comforting voices). They are a little goofy, but cover absolutely every thing ever. Fascinating.
–It’s traumatic, but I think a new art form was born with “S* town” and it’s worth a listen. It gets SUPER WEIRD. Really, really weird. Uncomfortable. Listen to it. It says a lot about a LOT.
(Sam Harris is super problematic and I don’t want to get into it here, but…he’s super problematic. Consider reconsidering him? Please? Google his…friends? His connections?None of it is good. Okay. )
— I listen to all sorts of edutainment stuff when I work out or sew- FUN: “Keep It” (pop culture), “The Nod” (pop culture and history- the grape drank episode is fascinating!) , “Song Exploder” (is AMAZING if you are a music nerd…or honestly even if you aren’t ) Radiolab is brilliant, as is their series on SCOTUS, “More Perfect.”
–CONTAINERS. This is not to be missed. Ties the world and history together with so much we talk about in ethical purchasing. It’s a great story.
— Hardcore History. My god, how is this free. The man who invented how to tell a true story. History you have not heard before. Brilliant and vibrant and alive.
Best!!!
I highly recommend Christopher Ryan’s podcast ‘Tangentially Speaking’.
Love the topic, as I am apparently a middle aged woman (isn’t that my mother??) without children 😉 But I can’t listen to podcasts. I have a block. I find it very hard to listen to talking without a visual. I have a hard time with audio books for the same reason…..
Yassss! I just turned 45, am happily child-free by choice and I find a lot of health / lifestyle podcasts are geared towards mommies. I listen mostly to true crime and /or male hosted podcasts for that reason.
I’ve thought many times about a podcast for women (preferably age 40+) without children, so would love it if someone started one! I’m in my late 40s now and have never regretted the decision not to have kids, but it’s been difficult to deal with the social ramifications at times.
Oh, forgot to mention that a podcast that I’ve been listening to recently and really like is Death, Sex, and Money.
I’d listen to this podcast. The model for our society is still so predominantly “women are mothers” that it would be nice to learn about how others are moving through their lives and the world on this different path. And to see our similarities and where we’re different.
I am also a huge Radiolab, Song Exploder, and Stuff You Should Know podcast fan. Also good for falling asleep: “Sleep with Me.”
Other podcasts: “By the Book,” “Happier with Gretchen Rubin, ” “Happier in Hollywood,” “Call Your Girlfriend,” “Reply All,” “Start the Week,” “A Piece of Work ,” “Invisibilia,” “Lexicon Valley,” “Longform podcast,” “On Being,” “Slate Spoiler Specials,” “The Sporkful,” “Still Processing,” “What’s Underneath.” A big combo of fashion, music, style, culture, language, science, and motivation! I’m in my late 40’s, no kids. All these connect with me in many ways.
Me too! Although it’s not middle age I’m concerned about, it’s being a senior.
Although middle age definitely has the potential for depression, feeling that you have a purpose and loneliness. I do think those of us without children are not alone in this, I can see my friends with children struggling with this too, especially as their kids leave the nest.
At least I’m not worried about paying someone’s college tuition 😉
Podcast recommendations:
Science Vs – does a deep dive into fact vs fiction on often controversial topics (keto diet, nuclear war, GMOs, opiods are some past topics). They also discuss how certain information got spread as “fact”.
Bitch Sesh – Two comedians (1 was one of the actresses on the show Happy Endings) dissect episodes and analyze the women of The Real Housewives. It is my favorite ” I need a laugh while working out” pod.
A Few Things – the founders of Of a Kind talk to founders of startups and also share their favorite producst.
Design Matters – one of the first I listened to. Writer Debbie Millman talks to people in design, fashion and other arts/cultural professions about their life. It is not so youth centric, which I think is lacking in most of the podcasts on these types of topics.
I love:
Nightcall (3 writers and friends discuss movies, life, jam bands, ren fairs, haunted dolls… Their rapport is wonderful, and they have sharp critical eyes)
Tom & Lorenzo Pop Style Opinionfest (intersection of fashion and culture/politics, reviews of TV shows and movies, commentary on RuPaul’s Drag Race)
99 Percent Invisible (extremely well-told stories about the built world – design of roads and cities, an early submarine, how design influences things in unexpected ways)
Long time reader, first time commenting. I just turned 40, childfree by choice. I’d definitely listen to your podcast! Also, thanks for the tip about Girlfriend Collective. It’s on my list as the next place to buy new leggings. Have a wonderful vacation!
