Wearing/Shopping
I can’t believe these jeans went on sale so quickly…I guess no one else but me likes them LOL. I think I passed the price adjustment period, but I’m definitely going to ask for one. You never know until you ask…
I walked around the mall this week, not looking for anything in particular, just wasting time most of all, and I had something to return to Nordstrom. I was not really intrigued by anything, EXCEPT I loved this wool vest at Eileen Fisher. I tried it on over my Frazier & Wing dress in the store and thought it was a beautiful layer – perfect for wearing with that dress, actually. It was soft, nicely draped, and warm (for a vest). But man…the price…I understand it, sort of, but also think it could be $100 cheaper? Maybe?
And, ugh…why couldn’t I have recognized this a week ago when I could have used my 10% off, but I am now convinced that I need the Elizabeth Suzann Florence pants in silk crepe. You may remember I had them in size medium, short, and gave them to my sister because they were too tight on me in the hips and I found the waist a little tight. I really loved them though and knew they had potential if I could get the right size. I think I’m going to order the black, size large, short. I want the waist to be NOT TIGHT, and it’s okay if it’s a little loose and lower on the hips. I wonder if they’ll come faster than 6-8 weeks??
Reading/Watching
I loved this article by Cathy Horyn on Rachel Comey & “weirdo fashion”:
Her grasp of individual personalities is also stronger than ever, and that was the question she really addressed in this lovely show — how to dress for one’s own pleasure.
YES YES YES.
Incidentally, the “model” in the photograph used to be a sales associate at one of my favorite indie boutiques here in Dallas, Tenoversix. He worked with me a few times and was always a pleasure. I am just beyond thrilled with Rachel Comey’s inclusive attitude and gender-neutral pieces (she did start out as a menswear designer after all) both on the runway and in her collections.
She does do weirdo fashion better than most though, and it’s more accessible than, say Vetements, both in terms of price and wearability. I look forward to adding more Rachel Comey to my wardrobe as soon as possible, maybe starting with this top when it goes on sale? I love it.
Leah does it again…her piece on mom jeans as the new corsets is really good – I struggle with my high-waisted denim (ahem…Rachel Comey) too – they are so good standing up, but when I sit, not so good. They’re a 1/2 inch big in the waist even. The more I wear them, the better they get, but I would not want to wear them eating a meal, or on the plane. It makes me think about the difference between how things fit/look when you’re standing up/trying things on, as opposed to how they fit/look when you sit down. I mean, we have to do both, right?
Honestly, I don’t even know how people wear Kamm pants, they look really uncomfortable even standing up, sitting must be absolutely hell. Don’t even get me started on the camel toe. ugh.
Doing
Donating as much as I can, getting rid of things before packing…
Maybe I’ll go see IT this weekend. I loved the book…
What are your plans? Everyone safe? I’m thinking about my dad and step-mom in Orlando and my step-son in West Palm Beach. Hoping they stay okay!
your point about the comfort of high waists is exactly why florence pants are so great – elastic!
i have bought (and sold) many ES pieces over the last few years, and to date (i now own 4 things) the florence pants in silk crepe are my hands-down favorite. they are pajama pants that look nice! i am partial to the navy because i think that color in the silk fabric is just perfection.
doubt they will arrive in less than 6-8 weeks though. i thought current wait times were even longer than that now? you might find them if you troll the selltradeES instagram page though. they also have an ISO spreadsheet.
i wonder about returns though? they must get a ton of returns…if they just HAPPENED to have a pair, it seems as if they’d ship pretty quickly.
i can only hope LOL
i always wonder about that! you could always email first and ask?
i feel like the selltradeES page is probably reducing their returns, because people can just swap or sell for the same price they paid. people are always looking to avoid the wait and will pay full price to do so if the item is still new!
I ordered Clyde pants July 22 (not that the date is burned in my memory or anything…) and am now about to hit week 7. At the time they had the current estimate up, of 6-8 weeks. They have had more time to catch up since their Warm Weather launch by now though, so who knows, wait times could be improving!
haha…i am SO BAD at waiting, i would be counting down the weeks also…
Wow did my jaw drop when I saw that comment about Rachel Comey. I love just about everything she does, but weird? Hardly. I’m not sure I would even call her unconventional. There’s a mixture of boho and modern, as far as I can see, but nothing startling. I wish the author of the article had taken a picture of the dress in question, so I could fully judge. She’s actually in my generally “not worth it” category because although she gets me, she is just soooo expensive, and I almost always feel either I can approach the same look for less, or I wouldn’t get enough use out of it. If I was unconstrained by budget, then by all means. Although I do like to think I wouldn’t spend too much more on myself than I already do 😉 even if I did have lots of money.
i think she meant it endearingly 😉
i agree about the pricing. i use credits, so…but i try to buy on sale or with a code if i can find one. i do think the denim, in general is “worth it” because of how unique it is. but other than that, you’re right.
i’m not going to lie, if i had MUCH MORE MONEY i would probably buy more rachel comey, but i would spend at least as much or more on saving all the dogs. so they balance out, right?
I know lindsey adelman meant it as a big complement, but I just don’t get it. She’s fun. She puts out a truly large and diverse range of product, rarely dull. But weird? Even in a good way? I see her stuff as contemporary and workable versions of many who have gone before. By the way, I was somewhat shocked to hear you, Grechen, sing her praises (so many bright colours and patterns!) But then I followed the link to the shirt (I do love a classic, muted charmeuse shirt myself, by the way) and now you are touting the virtues of her jeans! Now I understand, lol 😉
I had an all day meeting today and wore my silk Florence pants. Love love love them. Yes, they are as comfy as jammies but look flowing and elegant. I’ve seriously considered getting the silk Florence shorts and Marlena top to wear solely as pajamas.
Lol, Grechen! I did the exact same thing with the sizing code. I let the deadline go by and then I thought of a few things I’d like to order. I wanted to be sure I didn’t order anything *just because* of the discount and I was resisting so hard, I didn’t really think about whether I wanted to order anything.
I tried Florence pants a few months back and I did find them too tight at the waist. I just hate anything at all binding at the waist, so I ended up returning them. It’s worth replying to your order and asking if they happen to have your item in “backstock.” They won’t automatically fill your order that way — they’ll default to making to order, but sometimes they really do have stock laying around (maybe not after yesterday’s sample sale though.)
Totally agree with you on the Kamm pants opinion. I almost thought I needed a pair earlier in the summer but I’ve concluded I would completely hate them. All of my clothes are comfortable, even jeans, work trousers… anything. And I want to keep it that way!
You look great in that outfit — very stylish and comfortable 🙂
I agree with you about the EF vest…WAY too high in price!!! That’s like leaving behind the world of Macy’s to move into Barney’s! I don’t think that will work for them in the long run, they’ll lose their base.
I LOVE weirdo fashion! My dad thinks it’s hilarious that I love Black Crane dresses and tops. He calls them my “burlap sacks!” Expensive burlap sacks… 😉 I love Rachel Coney’s stuff – so good.
I’m totally jealous of my friend who owns a NYC art gallery. She attended Ulla Johnson’s show. *sigh*
And a photographer/film-maker friend shot Tom Ford’s show – I’m not sure for whom, tho!!! I begged to be his “gopher!”
Watching “Trapped,” an Icelandic cop thriller and loving it, but it makes me long for snow and cold weather! Haha! The Nordic in me.
Prayers and love for all of my friends and yours in Florida!
I think so much of how fashion is labeled is based on what we perceive is normally worn in smallish midwestern town. I grew up spending a lot of time in Berkeley and Marin County CA, and the standard uniform for anyone over a certain age is Eileen Fisher. Rachel Comey is what I associate with someone over 40 who is somewhat arty regardless of gender. As an adult I am very drawn to clothing of this style, it is carefree and comfortable without being bland. Maybe if I grew up somewhere else I would find florescent Lily Pulitzer frocks status quo and find something like Rachel Comey avant grade?
As for the high waisted pants, yes it temporarily fixes the hip to waist ration issue, but if you can’t sit, eat, drink, or bend over in them they are about as useful as a pair of 5″ stiletto heels….they look pretty in your closet.
I just received my latest ES order with a pair of moss silk Florence pants in size large and I love them so much! I basically decided I have to purchase them in black now! I have the linen ones in size large too but they are very loose and I prefer the fit on the silk which is a bit more slim. They are so comfortable and delicious on my skin!
