Wearing/Shopping
Everlane cotton sweaters review: I ordered the Cotton v-neck in small and medium and the Cotton mock neck in small with credits I earn when new customers make a purchase via my referral link. I sent the two small sweaters back and kept the grey sweater in medium; it just fit me more like I wanted it to – sort of slouchy and not too long. I really liked the color and the style of the green sweater, but the neck was WAY too tight. I’d consider getting another style in the green color, in medium, but I’m not in a hurry. The cotton is nice, and moderately warm; good as a layer in not-so-cold weather, but it’ll stretch a lot with wear/use and I’m not sure how it will hold up over time.
I will give the gray one a try for a while first and see what happens. Overall I think they’re good sweaters and worth the price. The sleeves are too long on me, of course, but the body of the sweaters are nicely cropped, so they’re not too long, which I appreciate. The v-neck on the v-neck sweater is pretty wide, which I like generally, but it’s harder to hide bra straps, or layer the sweater over a tee with such a wide neckline.
Did anyone else order one of the new cotton sweaters? What about the new colors of the wide leg pants? Once I found the right size (10) and got mine hemmed (outfit), I was happier with the fit of the wide leg pant, and look forward to wearing them once the weather permits. Oh, and the day heel relaunched in pretty fall colors, who ordered a pair of those (here’s my review)??
Elizabeth Suzann shoes – I took my mules to my cobbler last week to have a zip sole put on after Cheryl mentioned her experience falling down carpeted stairs in them (ouch!) and my own feeling that the sole was quite slippery. I’d never done this before to a pair of shoes, but after having multiple pairs of Sevilla Smith shoes come through slowre, and seeing the way the bottoms of the shoes wear, I thought this would be an excellent way to preserve the shoes, as well as make them more safe. I still haven’t worn them outside of the house yet (too HOT), but I’m planning all sorts of outfits with them once the weather cools down, and I’m really pleased with the work my cobbler did (she ALWAYS does amazing work and especially loves it when I bring in a pair of Sevilla Smith shoes – she is endlessly impressed by them).
Lo & Sons Hanover backpack made from recycled polyester – I am going to order this for travel since I’ve been looking for a backpack to carry on and use at my destination. I put my Tumi m-tote up for sale because I just can’t do a tote for traveling anymore; I prefer a backpack. I was going to get another Tumi backpack, but then I found this recycled polyester one by Lo & Sons. It looks very good, and I like that the insert is removeable. Has anyone tried anything from Lo & Sons? What do you think of the quality?
Reading/Watching
Acne Studios campaign with Kordale and Kaleb ; “instagram famous” gay dads and their kids. I love this campaign SO MUCH, and it makes me love Acne Studios even more than I already do. It matters the companies we choose to support and buy from, and there’s so much more to it than where clothing is made and who makes it (although that is VERY important). It’s about company culture and ideals, and this is a company culture I can totally get behind. It helps that Acne is very transparent about supply chain and CSR.
Style is having a middle-age renaissance – Celine Dion FTW. Her outfits are not my style, but I applaud her for not giving a fuck and wearing what she likes. I’d wear that Titanic vetements sweater tho…
We finished watching Ozark and I sort of miss it. It was SO DARK, but oddly satisfying.
Doing
Uh…we’re moving in a couple months. Not very far, although in DFW 30 minutes away is “far” enough that it’s almost like we’re moving a city. We’ll be moving into a larger house with a YARD, and I’m ridiculously excited about that. Both for Dagny’s sake, and for mine – I hope to plant a raised garden or something once we get settled in, and I want to start composting. I’ll also have a permanent place for photographing items for slowre instead of having to get the backdrop and everything out of the closet in my office every time I need to use it. That should increase my productivity immensely.
We’re not buying yet, still renting, for many reasons (still have the condo in Atlanta for one) but this will be a big change for us and we’re pretty excited.
What are you doing this weekend?? I would love to go and see Glass Castle – I read the book many years ago and loved it.
I was holding out on the Everlane sweaters but I think I’m gonna go for it now — thanks 🙂
And I have the Catalina weekender bag from Lo&Sons which I love. It doesn’t get as much use now that most of my travel is by airplane rather than road trips (I much prefer a rolling suitcase for air travel, the Catalina is heavy to carry through an airport) but the quality is great and has held up for years.
I can’t express enough how much I love Lo and Sons — so much so that after years of lurking in the shadows I’m making my first comment to encourage you to get the Hanover. I use the OMG for work travel and the Hanover for pleasure travel and the quality is wonderful. The customer service is also incredible as one of my work bags broke and was immediately replaced free of charge and very kindly. I think you’ll love the Hanover.
Thanks for the sweater review! I might try one of the v-neck sweaters this fall, though I normally prefer cardigans because I get hot. A pullover cotton sweater is something I’d wear when it’s bitter cold outside, lol. I’m watching “Atypical” on Netflix and it’s pretty good, but I want to try “Ozark,” too. I read this essay on Already Pretty this morning and LOVED it. I thought you’d appreciate it, too. http://www.heyalma.com/notes-on-frump-a-style-for-the-rest-of-us/
Have a great weekend!
I’ve sent back so many things to Everlane that I’m scared to even try again. But those sweaters look great on you! Very tempted by the v-neck.
Loving my ES mules! I bought them on a whim (a very expensive whim!) and wasn’t so sure I would like them but here they are on my feet for the second time this week! The size 38 is perfect on my 7-1/2 to 8 feet. I should probably go get soles and heel taps put on them but don’t want to give them up!
Congratulation on the move! Truth be told I love moving. It’s the whole new start/first day of school/new year’s day feeling.
My birthday is Sunday. My plans are to go to yoga in the morning, brunch and farmer’s market with my husband and family over for supper. Then they all need to leave before Game of Thrones begins!
happy birthday!!!!!
i like moving too, before i met my husband, i moved every year or so…i really think i thrive on change 🙂
i’m excited about it, it’s just the process i don’t love. although that’s not entirely true either – i do enjoy going through things and doing a big purge. can’t wait to get rid of tons of things from the kitchen that have just been piling up!
ah…game of thrones. i look forward to it ALL WEEKEND.
oh wonderful! sold 🙂
thanks for de-lurking and leaving your input madeline!
I like the look of the body of the Everlane vneck sweater, but am concerned about length (I’m all torso and petite, so “boxy” doesn’t often play well with me) and I wish the sleeves were a bit smaller and more fitted – ESPECIALLY paired with a boxier body shape. I’ll wait and see if one filters through to Poshmark at a discount, I think. They just really aren’t making many things for my body lately. Love the gray color, though.
the sleeves are the biggest issue for me. i also wish they were slimmer and shorter, but then again, i feel like i have abnormally short arms, so that’s unreasonable to expect 😉
i think i’ve transitioned to liking pullover more than cardigans lately – because pullovers are warmer. i get SO COLD up here in winter.
omg i just started reading that article and YESSSSS. (or YASSSS as the kids say now LOL) i love it so far.thanks for sharing it!
I kind of hate turtlenecks lately. I just tug them at my neck and they make me feel tied in. I bought one from Brass last fall, I wore it twice and promptly never wore it again.
One thing I did this summer was to buy most of my new summer clothes in June and not allow myself to buy any in August, which I think has worked out much better than last year! I just bought three possible cotton sweaters from Everlane. I’ll see how they go! It doesn’t get too cold here (PNW) and I’m allergic to wool, so cotton sweaters are really great when I can find them. I’m busty and petite with a long torso, so I’m not sure I’ll like the crop one, but perhaps the crew neck will be okay! I don’t love the waffle one I got from Grana last year, though it’s great for around the house.
Congrats on the move! The Everlane sweaters are intriguing (the v neck, not the mock) but I’m on the fence…it seems like not enough for $50. I ordered one of their cashmere sweaters in the spring, and returned it for budget reasons, but I think I’d rather spring for the cashmere over the cotton. I also really want that Titanic sweatshirt…
i know!! isn’t that titanic sweatshirt great?? it’s probably $1,000 though, knowing Vetement’s pricing…
everlane’s cashmere is very good. i just have enough of it, so i need something lighter weight now. i definitely recommend it though
Grechen, I picked up my ES Mules from the shoe repair shop yesterday. No more slip slide falling down stairs for me. I do still have an ever color-changing set of bruises…shoulder is doing better, but still a little painful.
I have decided to knit myself a sweater, got a great pattern from purlsoho.com, and some beautiful worsted weight yarn in a baby alpaca/wool/silk blend. Will knit up a gauge swatch tomorrow…haven’t knitted in a few years so wish me luck!!
Those Everlane cotton sweaters look too thin for my taste. It was 36F at my house when I got up last Saturday!! Highs were in the 80’s today, but cold weather is around the corner in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota.
I hope your move goes smoothly. Dagny will love having a yard to himself!!
cheers…cheryl
I always appreciate seeing your real life Everlane pics. I had high hopes for these cotton sweaters. I live in Arizona and really don’t need or buy wool sweaters. These are just too short and boxy for me, being very tall and having a long torso.
Hope the move goes well!
The sweaters look exactly right for you, which is how I know they’d be too short for me. (I’d be showing underboob with my long waist!) Although, I bought one of the Everlane cotton sweaters last winter and it isn’t TOO bad, provided that I layer a tee or tank top under it. The quality is good.
Finished watching the new season of “Hinterland” on Netflux and loved it. Now I’m trying to convince my hubby to go for “Peaky Blinders,” which My youngest daughter highly endorsed.
As for moving, I’ve told my husband that I have ONE move left in me, and that’s when we retire. He has suggested that I choose our ultimate location since I’ve always moved for his jobs. I’m already excited and looking…and we have ten years to go! 🙂 Good luck!
Grechen – please do a full review when you receive the backpack! I am looking for a new travel tote/carry-on and have always been a bit leery of backpacks because of pickpockets, etc. And this one looks amazing – can’t wait to hear more!
of course!!
Regarding the soles on Faye’s shoes, in her own words:
I do always recommend a rubber layer for your leather soled shoes. It makes it more comfortable, slip resistant, and easier to resole over time. Unfortunately, many people do not like them aesthetically and I am allergic to the glues needed to attach rubber to leather so we don’t put them on ourselves.
(I emailed ages ago in anticipation of getting a pair, and I have my first pair – seconds of the Zaidas and they are simply beautiful. I think a pair of gold Terilyns are in my near future…)
Got the wide leg crop in the new ‘surplus’ color. LOVE them!! Perfect for the warm fall weather. I also got the Oxford collarless short sleeve top in navy to go with them. So good!
nice!! i love that color for the wide leg crop. can’t wait for the weather to cool down so i can wear mine again.
