Wearing/Buying
I posted my outfit pic with my EF organic cotton jeans on Instagram the other day with a note to “wear what you like” – in response/push back against an idea that curvy, short women can’t/shouldn’t wear cropped wide leg jeans. If you’re a regular reader you know I could give a flying fuck about wearing things that are “conventionally flattering” AKA make me look taller and skinnier. I wear what I want, and what I feel good in and hope I never come off as trying to tell anyone else they should do otherwise. Anyway, Frances from Materfamilias wrote a comment that her wide leg jeans “Flatter her spirit” – which I thought was brilliant! What a beautiful way to say it. We should aim to do more flattering of our spirits.
And then, since I didn’t do any playing around with my own wardrobe in outfits this week, I played around with some slowre pieces:
Eileen Fisher asymmetrical dress (XS) | $45
(guys!! this is so good, it’s a little snug on me at the hips/butt, but will fit a range of sizes I think!)
Wood Wood sandals (37) | coming next week!
Demy Lee Sweater (XS) | $55
Elizabeth Suzann clyde culottes (not for sale!!)
NinaZ clogs (size 38) | $85 (these run big IMO)
Lina Rennell organic cotton Hoda tie dress | $70
only for you guys will I show my knees!!! I think this dress is so cute, and easy to wear. Would fit a small/medium with a larger bust better, and someone who doesn’t mind showing their knees LOL
Wood Wood sandals (37) | coming next week!
Longchamp Large 3d tote | $175
this tote is really great – it has quite a bit of water damage on the outside which has stained the bag, but it is still usable! I am always struck by how lightweight it is whenever I pick it up. It would be a great work tote, and the color is really gorgeous. FYI, I took it to my shoe/bag repair place and they cautioned against cleaning it because then the entire bag would probably have to be re-dyed to match, but that is something a buyer could consider – cleaning and dying the bag…
Reading/Watching
Talia at Ethel Grace has been killing it with her thoughtful posts (Gateway pants & Moderationism) lately. Head over there and take a look if you haven’t already. I am interested in following-up with two of my own posts actually, since they really made me think.
Doing
Making myself get back in the habit of doing a crossword puzzle everyday to try and stave off cognitive decline. I’m scared to death of getting alzheimer’s or dementia, so anything I can do to try and prevent it I will. I’ve read enough to know that exercising your brain is probably just as important as exercising your body, and I’m not sure I do enough of that. Anyway, I LOVE crossword puzzles. Something I know I should do is learn something new, that is REALLY supposed to get your brain in gear. I’ve been thinking about flying lessons. No joke.
How are you doing? What are your plans for the weekend?
Just read Ethel Grace’s post on moderationism and dying over the spot on the chart that reads “Owns a single jumpsuit made from organic thistles”…
YES. that was the funniest…
i want to be a moderationist 🙂
I have grown to love her posts as I have always loved ours Grechen!
OK I really like that asymmetrical dress even though I don’t usually like it in real life. I’m so tempted!! Is it more of a purple or more cobalt?
My sister bought me a NY Times mobile crossword subscription last year and I got really into doing the puzzle every day. It’s a skill for sure. The subscription ran out this year and I miss it! We would sometimes do them together over the phone. It reminded me of my mom, who always did the puzzle in the newspaper. I might pick up a book of them. What’s your favorite day to do? I like Wednesdays and Thursdays for a mix of not-too-hard but still challenging.
The blue is definitely more cobalt in real life. It’s so hard to get the color right in photographs!!
I have a mobile subscription again now too! Right now my favorite day is Monday lol – it definitely takes practice to get in the crossword mindset. It’s like a whole different vocabulary!!
Mondays can be very satisfying too 🙂 🙂 🙂
Cobalt (or purple for that matter) is not a color I wear, so I’m sad to pass on that dress because it’s the kind of strange and weird that I kind of like. I’ll be tucking away the image for inspiration tho.
I love the EF dress! But I have a note to myself that I don’t need any more dresses.
Question: What do you consider “mid-rise” in jeans/pants? I just received a pair of jeans ordered online and described as “mid-rise.” They stopped about 3 inches below my bellybutton.
Uh…that’s definitely not mid rise! I guess mid rise to me is just above my belly button? That’s where my Ef jeans hit …not sure what the rise actually is. Maybe 8”? I could not wear jeans that hit 3” below my belly button
I do the freebies on the WashPost/LA Times site. Though the NYT crosswords take me straight back to high school – I used to do them every day with a good friend of mine. Well, try every day. It was good for us!
I love when you play dress-up! It helps the clothing be shown off better and it’s fun to see you in things we know aren’t a normal part of your wardrobe.
I love the Longchamp tote except the color. Ah well. One of my favoite totes is a camel leather bag I got freshman year in college. Um, 1990? Maybe 1991. So by now it has some patina! But the straps are perfect, the lining isn’t torn, and the zipper still works great. So what if it has some darker staining along the bottom (dirt, water, who knows…) and some ink stains in a couple places? It’s a well loved part of my closet….
Yeah, they’re going back… this is why I don’t always love shopping online.
Hope you don’t mind, chiming in… low rise is at the hips, regular rise sits a view inches below the bb, midrise regular sits right below the bb and high rise is at the bb or higher 🙂 Rise measurements typically go from 7″ to 12″. The average high rise is ~10″. I’m wearing Mother Looker jeans today (at my bb) and those are 10″. Also depends on your body type.
I saw those pants at the EF brick and mortar store and thought of you. They feel so good! I am too fearful of dementia. I wouldn’t bother with crossword puzzles though unless it is something you really enjoy. I think as long as your mind is active reading and doing things you enjoy, then you are good. Probably being educated at baseline, writing this blog, reading, and doing your job alone is enough to keep those neurons strong. Also keeping your blood pressure and cholesterol in control will do a lot as well to ward off the vascular type of dementia.
I think Michelle is right – you do a lot to keep your brain active, between your writing and trying to keep Slowre orders straight! But I’ve always done The NY Times puzzle for the same reason. And I feel super successful if I finish a Saturday!
I think the long ES kimono nails it! The proportions are so fun. And I know it’s WAY too much color (with the exception of your EF red Summer dress) but the Demylee sweater with the Clyde culottes is so great. I’d find it very hard not to WANT everything that came in for consignment!
I have an aunt with late stage Alzheimer’s so I have had concerns about how to minimize cognitive decline as I’ve watched her disease progress. Through podcasts I’ve learned about 2 books on the topic: “The Alzheimer’s Solution” by Dean and Ayeasha Sherzai, MD and “The Better Brain Solution” by Steven Masley. I just finished the Alzheimer’s Solution and can recommend it. I have the Better Brain Solution on reserve at the library, so I can’t say anything about that book, but I listened to the author on a podcast and he was very informative! The strategies in both books seem similar based on the podcasts, with the exception of meat consumption. The Sherzai’s are vegans, while Steven Masley does consume animal products. Long comment! Hope it’s helpful.
It kills me that the average high rise is 10″. This is firmly in the midrise camp on my body! I get excited to see a truer 12″ high rise.
