Earth Day is April 22 (image via NASA)
- What’s something you do that’s ethical/sustainable/eco-minded that you are proud of?
- What’s something you think you could do better?
- What’s your favorite natural fabric? (wool, cashmere, alpaca, cotton, linen, silk, for example)
- What’s the last item of clothing, shoes, or accessory you had repaired/restored so you could keep wearing/using it?
- Your ultimate vacation? Beach, mountains, or city? (not that this has anything to do with earth day, I just want to know LOL)
My answers:
- Our recycling bin is consistently more full than our garbage bin every week (they’re the same size containers) – so I’m proud of all the recycling we do, generally. I also haven’t taken a plastic or paper shopping bag in years; I carry baby and regular BAGGU bags with me everywhere I go.
- Besides everything? Specifically I’m focusing now on working harder to reduce waste, and even reduce recyclables. Just because something is recyclable, doesn’t mean it WILL be recycled, or that it’s better than not buying it in the first place, or buying larger containers. I’d like to try a bar soap to use in the shower instead of shower gel that comes in a bottle. And I could probably drink fewer la croix waters 🙁
- Oh man… what a question! all of them – I love them all. But maybe I love linen just a teeny bit more than others?
- Well, I’ve been working really hard to get the stains out of my white tees I love so I don’t have to replace them. Otherwise, I’m pretty good about tailoring things to keep them nice looking and getting shoes cleaned/repaired when I need to.
- ALL OF THEM!!! I’m definitely more of a mountains kind of girl than a beach girl, but I do love a good beach vacation. My favorite type of vacation to take with my husband is a city vacation though, we just land, head to the hotel then walk for miles and miles every day around whatever city we’re visiting.
Okay. So here’s the giveaway:
As you know, I received the Everlane day mules to review for you last week. I don’t need them, and would rather pass them on to someone else who would love them. They are a size 8, black, and have only been worn a couple of times outside the house. I feel like they run true to size, but they would probably also fit a 7.5 well.
One winner will get the shoes, and another will get a $50 Everlane gift card. This giveaway is not sponsored or sanctioned by Everlane in ANY WAY AT ALL.
The shoes must go to a winner in the United States, but the gift card winner can be from anywhere.
To enter to win, answer the questions in the comments, and make sure when you comment, you use a valid email address (don’t leave your email in the body of the comment, just link it when fill out the form so only I can see it). If you only want to be considered to win the gift card (if you can’t wear a size 8 shoe…), please note that in your comment.
I’ll close the giveaway on Friday and choose the winners randomly from the comments.
Happy Monday!!
1. I carpool to work with my husband everyday.
2. Planting my garden again.
3. Cotton.
4. My Frye wedges.
5. Beach.
1. Partly thanks to your inspiration, most of my clothes are purchased second-hand.
2. I still purchase too much in general, and too many new items – though I’m actively working on improving this (but oh, it’s a struggle – I just love collecting “special” pieces).
3. I’ll pick two – cashmere and silk.
4. My pre-loved Frye boots – I bought them off of eBay at the start of winter, and am dropping them off at my shoe repair place today on my lunch break to be cleaned, polished, and have the soles looked at.
5. If it’s just me, without my kids? Anywhere would be delightful! I guess it’s OK if my husband comes with me 🙂
The shoes wouldn’t fit me, so I’m only interested in the gift card – thanks!
1. eliminate diet coke (and their bottles) along with most bottled water
2. more complete recycling
3. cashmere
4. everlane loafers (I walk a lot, so shoes definitely need restoration!)
5. foreign city — but with a waterfront would be great!
1. I have a reusable water bottle that I carry with me everywhere to cut down on waste, and I’m very conscious of cutting down on water usage at home.
2. A lot! I’ve been wanting to compost, but I just haven’t gotten around to it.
3. Cotton!! It’s easy to launder, easy to wear, and easy to sew with!
4. I’m constantly resewing buttons back onto everything I own with buttons and sewing up holes in my fiance’s shirts.
5. The mountains are calling, and I must go!
1 – Food choice – I eat low on the food chain and when I eat meat, I try to only buy organic and humanely raised. I eat in season and locally when possible, which I admit is easier because I live in California.
2 – I need to reduce the amount of paper coming in — catalogs and junk mailings got way out of hand the last year and I haven’t committed the time to making the calls to remove myself from mailing lists.
3. Cotton is easiest but I love linen the most.
4. A beautiful wool sweater I bought in the early 2000s.
5. Just came back from a beach vacation and it can’t be beat in terms of splendor and physical luxury, which are two things I don’t get much of in my day to day life. So generally I’d say “beach.”
1. Hmm, I try to support local businesses for groceries, hardware, etc. I try to purchase clothing from ethical companies like ES, Everlane, Cuyana.
2. There’s definitely room for growth here. I’d like to recycle more frequently.
3. I am loving linen right now, though silk is probably a close 2nd.
4. That’s easy- shoes. I have an amazing cobbler and find that I can keep my favorite shoes and boots for SO long by conditioning the leather and having them resoled regularly.
5. Ultimate vacation is the beach with some city time. Barcelona was amazing.
