Where do you live?
I live in the DFW area and we have had little tastes of cooler weather (by that I mean high 70’s) here and there, but it’s still generally hot here. Honestly, I’m dreading the winter this year. I was very cold last winter, and could never seem to warm up. Even in the house, which we keep around 68 degrees or so (unless the sun is shining on me, I’m cold when it’s under 70 degrees). I need to be better at layering, wearing socks (ugh) and keeping my neck wrapped (I actually just ordered this alpaca neck wrap in black by Beklina – how cute is that??!).
My fingers still get cold though, and I’m usually walking around with a hot cup of tea, coffee, or just water. In the winter, I feel old and frail and I dislike that feeling.
Do you prefer fall or spring?
I prefer spring, by just a little. I love season changes anyway (it’s that predictable change I can get behind…), but I like going from cold to warm better than from HOT to just a little cooler 😉
What are you looking forward to wearing again?
As much as I dread being cold, I do love my sweaters and I can’t wait to wear them again. I have a cashmere cardigan by Inhabit that’s about a decade old and still holding up nicely; it’s warm and comfy and I’ve already started wearing it a bit at home at night.
I like wearing long sleeve tees, sweatshirts (so excited to wear this organic cotton one by Rudy Jude soon – 35% off!!) and light sweaters.
I DON’T like wearing socks, but I think I should wear them more often, especially if I want to wear my Dansko clogs this winter. I’m ordering a few pair by Hansel from Basel to get me more excited LOL:
Have you bought anything new for the season?
uh, yes. See this post about the Shopbop sale, and the above items. I’m also going to order the Elizabeth Suzann clyde trench in cotton canvas, clay, size small.
DID YOU SEE THE WAIT TIMES DECREASED?? When REI has their member 20% off coupon I’m going to get a Patagonia pullover, and that will probably be it for “shopping.” I’ve bought and returned a lot of things recently, but I think I’m finally getting comfortable with what I’ve decided to keep and add, assuming all of the things fit.
What’s your favorite thing about fall?
Pumpkin!! LOL, just kidding. I mean, I love pumpkin flavors, but I’ve never been into pumpkin spice EVERYTHING and certainly not pumpkin spice lattes (I prefer chai, but don’t really drink lattes). I do love to make pumpkin pancakes, but I can do that in the middle of summer if I want to. I enjoy cooler mornings and evenings, sitting outside with tea, or a glass of wine and not suffocating from the heat. I love Thanksgiving and seeing family. Both my sister’s and my birthdays are in fall. When we lived in Atlanta I loved seeing the changing leaves. Here, they mostly just fall off the trees instead of changing color.
Your turn!!!
I LOVE autumn, it’s my favourite season, mainly because pretty much all my family have Birthdays, and because Bonfire night and the build-up to Christmas are great.
1. Where do you live? Is it starting to cool off a bit where you are?
It’s definitely getting cooler here in London, particularly in the morning and evenings.
2. Do you prefer fall? or spring?
Autumn I think, although Spring is a close second. but I love all the colours and coziness of autumn.
3. What are you looking forward to wearing again as the weather changes?
Jumpers and boots!
4. Have you bought anything new for the season?
I bought a new cashmere jumper and cardigan, and a thicker-weight work dress. Also some work trousers, but those were mainly because I’ve lost weight and all my other trousers are now too big! I did order a lovely pair of Navy Boden ankle boots, but I’m trying to decide whether I need them enough to justify keeping them.
5. What’s your favorite thing about fall?
I’m a distance runner, so cooler temperatures definitely feel like a welcome relief after the searing heat of this summer. But the best thing is probably the roaring fires and hearty food!
Where do you live? Is it starting to cool off a bit where you are?
I live in central Virginia and it’s still hot here and has been very rainy, which is not my favorite.
Do you prefer fall? or spring?
Neither! I love summer. Like you, I am always cold, so I love summer at it’s most insane – hot, sunnyt, humid summer. It’s when I feel and look the best.
What are you looking forward to wearing again as the weather changes?
Boots and jackets. I have a new leather jacket and a pair of great suede boots from Madewell (purchased on clearance in July) that I’m dying to wear.
Have you bought anything new for the season?
See above. I’ve also bought a new backpack that I’m hoping will become my new work tote.
What’s your favorite thing about fall?
Fall seems to be everyone’s favorite and I do enjoy a change but mostly I find fall a little depressing.
Where do you live? Is it starting to cool off a bit where you are? Nashville, TN. Yes, it’s not in the 90’s anymore but it’s been raining all week. I’m sure we still have some 80 degree days left!
Do you prefer fall? or spring? Spring, for the same reason as you, Grechen. But I enjoy the fall as well. I don’t love the cold.
What are you looking forward to wearing again as the weather changes? Long sleeves and sweaters. The Frye boots I bought from eBay last year and the long sleeved Only Child raw silk top I bought from Slowre a few weeks ago!
Have you bought anything new for the season? See Only Child top above. I’ve got a number of items in my ThredUp cart right now as well. Mostly tops and sweaters. I’ve been looking to replace my scarf, hat, and gloves for a couple of years but haven’t found anything perfect.
What’s your favorite thing about fall? Winter squashes, the return of hearty greens, and turning off the AC!
1. Where do you live? Is it starting to cool off a bit where you are? I live in the Raleigh, NC area and while we are down to the 80’s during the day (no more 90’s), it’s still not really “cool” to me, even in the mornings (it’s been too humid for me to want to open our screen porch door). I’m still in cropped pants, short sleeves, and flip flops! I grew up in Anchorage, AK, spent 20+ years in the Minneapolis area, and tend to run “hot” except for my hands/feet, so NC is almost always too hot for me.
2. Do you prefer fall? or spring? AUTUMN all the way.
3. What are you looking forward to wearing again as the weather changes? Sweaters! Cardigans are my favorite clothing item of all time.
4. Have you bought anything new for the season? I just bought a lined past-the-tush rain jacket from Eddie Bauer to take to Paris in February – waiting for it to arrive to see if it’s a keeper. I also bought a pair of black Clark’s loafers for a November business trip and 2 pairs of work trousers.
5. What’s your favorite thing about fall? Hot tea, mochas, sweaters, fires on the patio, and airing out the house. Unfortunately, none of this has happened yet here, although I do drink hot tea in the AC.
My husband finds Fall depressing too. Not as much now that we live in the Raleigh, NC area, but for the 20+ years we lived in the Minneapolis, MN area, he would get depressed every Fall because it meant winter was almost there.
I wanted to throw out the idea/fact of saunas: I moved from Florida to a cold northern state about five years ago. Regular trips to the sauna have drawn me back from the brink of feeling stiff and cold. I think heavy exercise has a similar effect, but the hot air that surrounds you in a sauna is .just. .so. .therapeutic.
You and I are so much alike! I live in Southern California and it gets cold here in the winter, 60s, and I never seem to be able to get warm. I know it’s not THAT cold, I’m from Detroit and Colorado so I get it. But I am chilled. It’s starting to cool off and I’m kinda dreading it.
I prefer SUMMER, I like it in the 80s. (And it sounds like I’m not alone!)I loathe wearing layers and sweaters and socks, I feel very confined, restricted and claustrophobic. So the less clothing for me the better. Give me birks, shorts and a white tank every day and I’m happy!
Not looking forward to fall clothing and having to layering up but I do like wearing cute socks with my No.6 clogs.
Bought some of Patagonia stuff for fall, the quilted cotton stuff is cozy but doesn’t feel very heavy. Great company too.
Great post! I’ve bought SO many things from your post and now maybe even that Clyde Trench now. Thank you for all you do. I genuinely like reading all your posts and really, really resonate with so much of what you write about. 🙂
Where do you live? Is it starting to cool off a bit where you are?
Tallahassee. It is still in the 90’s and humid. Argh, will it ever end?!
Do you prefer fall? or spring?
I love fall. The air smells fresher, and there is no need for the dreaded ac! Also, I love to wake up and take my cup of coffee and a blanket outside and just enjoy the sounds of the birds and squirrels.
What are you looking forward to wearing again as the weather changes?
I hate summer and can’t wait to break out a sweater and closed toe shoes. I can get behind investing in fall/winter clothes because they last longer than their summer counterparts and I love the richness and depth of the colors offered.
Have you bought anything new for the season?
I bought a navy cashmere cardigan that I probably won’t be able to wear until January and two nicer sweatshirts. I’ve been trying to find a new pair of boots, but thus far all three I’ve ordered have gone back.
What’s your favorite thing about fall?
I love everything about fall! The colors of changing leaves…though we don’t get that here either, they just die and fall off the same as when I lived in Dallas, fall food—I never met a squash I didn’t like and I love to cook soups and stews, hot baths with epson salt, wine and a good book! Oh, and I don’t have to do laundry as much!
Where do you live? Is it starting to cool off a bit where you are?
NC, we’re on track to have one of the hottest Septembers on record, so no, not really cooling off.
Do you prefer fall? or spring?
Spring by just a little – the new growth in the garden! But I hate summer, I hate being hot, summer is my least favorite season. And here I am living in the South. I grew up in New England and fall was definitely my favorite there! (I also didn’t garden when I was younger…)
What are you looking forward to wearing again as the weather changes?
Close toed shoes? A sweater outside? Sleeves? Scarves! Pretty much anything other than the sleeveless dresses I live in April – October.
Have you bought anything new for the season?
Black slip-on sneakers from Ecco. And a new purse – vegan leather, inserts from old flat weave rugs, made by native Alaskans. Very cool.
What’s your favorite thing about fall?
Temperatures. Smell of dead leaves. Sound of dead leaves under foot when I’m walking in the woods. Being able to have a bonfire in our firepit and not roasting. Being able to take a break from gardening 😉 Enjoying hot cereal for breakfast again. (esp pumpkin steel cut oats in the slow cooker overnight!) Drinking tea.
1. Where do you live? Is it starting to cool off a bit where you are?
Christchurch, New Zealand. Nope, it’s starting to warm up, spring has arrived! Lots of lambs and daffodils everywhere. Although we’ve just had a fairly epic southerly storm blow up the South Island so the ski fields will remain open a little longer.
2. Do you prefer fall? or spring?
I prefer fall. Where I live, it’s really freaking windy and come fall, the wind dies off some and the weather is all around more settled. Spring is just too random for me.
3. What are you looking forward to wearing again as the weather changes?
My wardrobe doesn’t really change that much year-round cos we’re so temperate. I guess I’m looking forward to only having to dress in single layers?
4. Have you bought anything new for the season?
Nope, not yet. I’m about to head to Sri Lanka for 10 days so after that, the weather here should have warmed up enough that I can start thinking about if I need anything for summer.
5. What’s your favorite thing about fall?
To me, it feels like the time when I can stop and breathe. Summer and winter are always hectic with my job, and I always try to head off overseas during spring. Fall is my at-home time, my recharging time.
1. Where do I live? I live in Alabama, and much like the Dallas area (I have family there), it hasn’t cooled down much until today – it’s been in the 70’s, but with drenching rain 🙁
2. What season do I like best and why? Definitely fall – because of the colors. The fall colors have always been my favorites. I’m one of the few people I know who likes orange and yellow. (But then, I never claimed to be like everyone else). I too dread cold weather though. I’m old, so it seriously hurts me, especially my feet and neck.
3. What am I looking forward to wearing? Socks! and warm sweaters I guess. I never remember what I’ve packed up when the weather changes, so it’s like finding new things all over again.
4. Have I bought anything new? No, I’ve looked, but I think I’ll wait till I drag out all my old stuff and see what I need to fill in.
5. My favorite thing about fall? Again, the colors. Love the colorful leaves, especially next to the green pines. I like the cool, crisp days – just not the cold ones.
Good post,enjoyed it.
Grace & Peace, Iris
1.Where do you live? Is it starting to cool off a bit where you are?
I live in the Northeast Atlantic states – The east end of Long Island, NY. It can’t make up its mind whether to be nice or rainy, warm & humid or cold & windy.
2.Do you prefer fall? or spring?
I absolutely LIVE for Fall! I used to hate Summer until we moved out here by the ocean, and now I love it since I adore sunbathing (with gobs of sunscreen) and swimming. I pretty much love every season!
3.What are you looking forward to wearing again as the weather changes?
SWEATERS!!! And jeans because my legs don’t look so great (eczema scars). Oh, and my ankle boots.
4.Have you bought anything new for the season?
Yes! I’m trying to do more 2nd hand, so I bought a gorgeous VINCE v-neck cashmere sweater and a charcoal long-sleeve Skaargorn tee.
5.What’s your favorite thing about fall?
Hot chocolate with a book in front of the fireplace, long walks on the trails without fear of tick-born diseases, a QUIET town!
I live at the north end of Napa Valley in Calistoga. We’ve had a blessedly mild year after a pretty brutal summer last year (followed by fires…ugh.) and we are all waiting desperately for rain…due Monday. YAY!!!
I grew up on the east coast and love to garden so I always preferred spring. While I love spring in Napa Valley, fall is everything.
As the weather changes, I always love donning my handknits. Mostly socks and sweaters but they fill me with joy.
I think I’m done buying clothes, as I seem to want to make ALL THE THINGS these days. So now, I buy shoes and handbags. I scored the lovely Numero 10 bag from you and the white clogs from your brain so… that’s quite a pair, eh? I want to make a warmer Haori/Yukata style coat from boiled wool so that will be on the agenda soon. Plus…I need to make more socks.
After the first rain, everything cools off and turns blessedly green and moss grows and the fairies come. It’s so lovely.
1) I live in the Black Hills of South Dakota very close to Mt. Rushmore. We had an unusually cool summer in the Central Hills. My furnace actually turned on several mornings all summer long. We have the possibility of snow in the forecast tomorrow morning as it will be in the 20s.
2) I love Spring and Fall, but Spring only lasts a few weeks before it’s summer. Fall usually hangs on a lot longer. I love the traditional Fall colors of rust, olive, browns, mustard etc.
3) I am looking forward to wearing boots and booties, tights and sweaters. Layers are my friend in the Fall.
4) I haven’t bought much for F/W. a couple of sweaters, a couple pairs of Patagonia corduroy pants (rust and olive). A pair of lower heeled ankle boots as I can’t wear my wedge heels anymore due to hip pain. I received my ES black canvas Andy Trousers last week and they are perfection!! I can’t wait to wear them!! I also got several of the ES/AC knits and I love the thick cotton fabrication.
5) My favorite things about Fall is firstly Halloween. Decorating our house inside and out, and then Thanksgiving with it’s good food, warm feelings and sharing of what we have to be ever so thankful for.
i love thanksgiving too 🙂
i can’t believe it’s so cold already for you!! I’m sort of jealous and sort of not LOL
that bag is so beautiful, i’m so glad you got it! and yay for matching dansko clogs 🙂
haha. i bet you love a quiet town after summer tourism! it must be really lovely actually – i’ve never been to the beach outside of summer, but i can imagine it’s nice just to walk and wander without all the people around.
yes, so much rain across the southeast and texas lately! we’re getting it too.
i LOVE cool crisp SUNNY days – those are so invigorating to me! but i agree, i’m not a fan of the cold ones…
oh sri lanka! that sounds wonderful. i hope you have an amazing time!
your new bag sounds interesting! how was your vacation? missed you around here 🙂
air conditioning!! i hate air conditioning!!! not that i mind being cooler in the middle of summer, but i cannot deal with air blowing on me at all, and i tend to get cold if i’m sitting in AC too long. so thankful for no more air conditioning soon!
ah…squash…my favorite is kabocha, but i love all squashes 🙂
YES. i get chilled too, and then never seem to warm up. i think i’ll take e’s suggestion of a sauna every once in a while seriously. now where to do that?? i do take hot baths every evening before bed in the winter – that keeps me warm for a while too.
i bought some cute socks! so excited to try them with my dansko clogs. my no6 clogs from shopbop didn’t work out – they sent me the wrong size, although i specifically asked which size i was getting. UGH. i do NOT Understand why they don’t use the sizing on no6’s shoes instead of “American” sizing. why make it so confusing?? so frustrated.
thank you kelly 🙂
i am seriously going to take this under advisement 🙂
i do think a sauna every once in a while would help, thank you for the suggestion!
YES to cardigans!!! why are they so good???
yes, can’t wait to turn off the ac.
and i loved that only child top – so glad you got it! it seems like an excellent layering piece too.
summer is growing on me, actually. i do like not being cold, but i get tired of summer after a while, like if it would end abruptly on september 1, that would be great. it’s just enough already with 100+ temperatures by then…
i used to run too, and always appreciated the cooler weather for that. (I only built up to half marathon lengths…) – i was miserable running in the heat.
so much talk about bonfires! i’ve never been around one, or a firepit even. sounds heavenly though!!
Where do you live? Is it starting to cool off a bit where you are? Northern New England. Yes — a few nights dropping down to the upper 30s, but no frost yet (thank goodness, I have garden stuff I still need to do). A few really chilly, wet days where I’ve needed a puffy vest underneath my rain jacket, and still felt cold the way only damp air makes you cold…
Do you prefer fall? or spring? Love both! We don’t get much of a spring where I am (we call it mud season), but I love that transition, the impending warmth and lengthening days — I always need more sunlight. But autumn is spectacular, just breathtaking. The foliage, yes, but also the sky — it just gets so clear. I like the angled quality of the sunlight this time of year. And I like that the ground is drier than in the spring. I’m always craving change, so the transitions between seasons are my favorite.
What are you looking forward to wearing again as the weather changes? Boots and jeans!
Have you bought anything new for the season? An ochre/mustard top, to experiment with that colour a bit. A pair of Everlane Cheeky Straights in the new Washed Black (SO GOOD — very soft and looser fit than the Stay Black pair I bought last spring — they definitely will not steal wears from each other because they are very different). A pair of black canvas chelsea boots, minimalist/barefoot style — LOVE them. Would like to add some Hansel from Basel socks, a pair of corduroys, and a new dress for the holidays, but that’s about it. If I find a new dress it might necessitate new shoes.
What’s your favorite thing about fall? Baking — I don’t enjoy baking in the summer when it’s hot, but right now I just want to bake all the pies. Apple, pumpkin, sweet potato… And hiking — the cooler days and dry trails make this the best time of year for it (and most places are not nearly as crowded as during summer!).
Amazing vacation!! I was totally spoiled, and we got to see all sorts of wildlife AND the aurora borealis on our last night (Alaska cruise, plus time in Vancouver). I ate and drank a lot, but we also walked a lot. I think our favorite parts of the trip were the old sitka spruce forests we were able to walk through! Also I had an eagle eye for animal spotting, which is SO unlike me. But it was like that the entire trip…
This is the store where I got my bag but they don’t have any bag examples online now to see https://www.theloomalaska.com/pages/about-us
Also, everything in the store was 50% off. Which is why I came home with souvenirs I wasn’t planning on….
1. Suburbs 45 minutes outside of Philadelphia, PA. It’s definitely cooling down here. It started while I was in Florida, which made me sad. I love the first rush of cool air when autumn starts and a rainy weekend to stay huddled inside. I completely missed that this year and first full week of cooler weather while I was sweating my ass off and nearly dying of heat stroke in Florida. Temps here are in the 70s during the day and 50s at night.
2. Definitely an autumn fan. My birthday was this week and it was nice and cool and rainy. I like some pumpkin things, but I prefer kabocha, which is Japanese pumpkin, more than traditional pumpkin. The skin on kabocha is thin enough to eat, so I love roasting some in the oven. The sweetness with the little bit of chewy crunch from the roasted skin is my favorite. I’m usually sick of it by March, but I gorge on it in the cooler months. Although I’m a cool color fan (preferring blues and grey), I do like autumn colors that then fade to the cool browns and grey of winter.
3 -4. Due to the office being an ice box year round I’ve actually worn a lot of my wardrobe year-round. I’ll be able to wear more of my heavier sweaters and some boots now, but that’s about the only change. I did buy a YY sweater and long sleeve shirt that’s so long I could technically wear it as a dress, but I’ll most likely layer it over my new wide-leg pants. I may buy another sweater soon though.
5. I like the way autumn smells. I know it’s literally everything decaying, but there’s something about that I like. It’s the same sort of way people like the smell of musty old books and libraries. You know it’s just dust and old stuff, but something about it is comforting. I like the smell of the decay and damp earth from more rain and snow. I also like the chill in the air. I don’t like it to be flat out cold, but a chill is good. It makes me want to move around more to stay warm so it forces me to be more active. When it’s flat out cold I tend to want to hide like a hermit though and exercising becomes the bane of my existence.
I love that neck wrap! It also seems easier to deal with than a scarf, like it would stay put nicely. I’m also coveting her square earrings.
1. I live in Hawaii & it is very hot and humid now. If you look at our temps it looks moderate but combined with the high humidity it has been sticky & uncomfortable. I even got heat rash earlier this week.
2. I prefer late fall in Hawaii. Early fall is hurricane season and humid (hate it). Passing showers & moderate temps with cool breezes in the late fall. Whale season is also late fall through early spring (humpbacks come to Hawaii during whale season). I also enjoy Fall in Seattle (we always visit for one week in the fall – football and island road trips).
3. Nothing specific in Hawaii except I look forward to not having sweat drip down my back as I get ready in the morning. In Seattle I enjoy wearing booties & my hooded North Face.
4. I bought a short Sorel snow boot (the Whitney short lace). It feels like a sneaker and is very light. I’ll wear it to the Washington Huskies game as my feet (& hands) always freeze while we’re there in Nov or Dec.
5. Lower humidity & whale sightings. Also specialty holiday lattes.
