Kristina asked me for a round up of “similar fitting skirts” at different price points after I posted my recent Ace & Jig acquisition (above). So, here you go! I looked mostly for straight midi-skirts, but some are slightly a-line, and they don’t all have buttons up the front. I also included a couple of tube skirts, because I am a HUGE fan of tube skirts, and found some knit ones on sale (including the Lauren Manoogian one I have).
Contrary to the “conventional” style advice for pear-shaped women, which recommends a-line skirts, I prefer straight/pencil skirts, so this is the only type of skirt I seek out and will wear. But straight, high-waisted WELL fitting midi skirts are elusive, for me (unless they’re jersey, and James Perse…); I’ve been looking for a good denim one forever, but I have never found one that fit me like this Ace & Jig skirt fits me. Which is to say, perfectly. Before I got this I was waiting for the Ilana Kohn Cielo skirt to get marked down – and that is my top pick from all the skirts below.
Anyway…on to the skirts. They are almost all from Garmentory, which is my go-to site for indie design. And if you don’t already have an account, when you use my referral link to sign up for one you’ll get a $20 account credit to use on your first order. I will get $20 in my account too. Do you wear straight skirts? midi length skirts? High-waisted skirts? What’s your favorite skirt style?
Straight skirts highlight my saddlebag thighs, so I go for more fullness in that area. I am a big fan of maxi’s or tea length and prefer fabric with some flow for ease of movement and drape. Mid-calf is my least favorite length and I avoid at all costs unless wearing with tall boots. Not a good proportion for me at all. We learn these things about ourselves along the way, don’t we.
I have an Only Child Miro Skirt in navy raw silk. Pretty straight fit, more forgiving that a pencil skirt. No buttons — which I love on full skirts but have always found to gape on slimmer cut skirts. It has a small vent in the back, which I may someday ask a tailor to make longer andcreinforce better as it interferes with my stride a bit and I feel I’m putting undue strain on the seam.
I don’t wear skirts very often because I don’t like the way my legs look. I’ve got eczema scars and itchy spots…ugh. But when I do wear a skirt, it’s always midi and pull-on because I hate anything tight around my waist. I LOVE the Osei Duro skirt! I’d wear it with a white tee and my grey suede Birks. I don’t know how their sizes run, tho. It’s gotta be pull-on because of SML sizing. Do you know?
Yay, Thank you!!
I like the look of some of these skirts way more than I thought I would – a slim midi is not generally a good look for me. Some of what I’ve seen online has been….horrifying to me. There is an Eileen Fisher skirt that looks EXACTLY like the dirndl skirt I made in 7th grade home ec in (math in my head…..1985?) What’s the saying – if you wore it the first time around? ….
I’m generally not a skirt fan, but as you know from my recent post, I’m starting to warm up to them. I mostly prefer midi length skirts and I don’t mind if they are straight or form fitted. Those are the only ones I have right now but I am looking to get a fuller midi skirt.
