What’s on my ultimate fall wishlist? (meaning, what I really want, but probably won’t buy…)
- Fall/Winter long sleeve jumpsuit like the one Alyson is wearing, James Perse makes a good olive green one and I am also REALLY drawn to this red one by Horses Atelier*. Also this one in black raw silk by Ozma is very appealing (I already have a “summer” version in medium that I love). This is something I probably won’t buy though, honestly, I love wearing rompers/jumpsuits/etc., but do I need more??
- Alpaca scarf/wrap – If I need sweaters or knitwear I’m trying to replace or add more alpaca instead of cashmere (it’s much more sustainable) and I love this wrap by Bare Knitwear (If you use my referral link to sign up for an account at Garmentory you’ll get a $20 account credit and so will I)
- Black wide, cropped pants – I’m trying to choose between these by Ordinary Fits (which I’m sort of obsessed with) and Elizabeth Suzann silk Florence pants. I know, they’re very different, and I could work both into my wardrobe, but I need to choose one for right now 😉 I’m going to be selling my black Everlane wide cropped pants – they just don’t fit my body very well; I’d rather have one of these two “loose” pairs.
- Allbirds sneakers – I’m definitely getting these, just waiting until right before going to Denver in early November, and for the weather to cool down a bit.
- Lo & Son’s recycled polyester Hanover backpack – I’m also definitely getting this, again, waiting a bit until just right before traveling to Denver
- Canvas slip-in sneakers – my Vince slip-in sneakers are on their last legs, the sole is almost entirely worn through, and I don’t want to replace them with more leather. Anyway, when Vans first came out in the 80’s I wanted THIS SPECIFIC PAIR so bad, but I got a knock-off pair instead. I wore those until they were literally falling apart. Now that I can buy my own shoes, it might be time for me to finally get the pair I wanted LOL
- Silk blouse? I don’t know, this is something I think I’d like to have, but I’ve never really given them a try. I love the feel of silk, and I’m interested to see the new silk launching at Everlane tomorrow (WHY am I drawn to the red/burgundy??), but I’m not really sure what to do with a silk blouse for my lifestyle.
- Blazer – slightly oversized, but not too, and doesn’t look like part of a suit. I’ve had blazers and not worn them like I thought I would, so this is something I might pass on as well. I do like the idea of one. But…
- Lightweight drapey sweater – this is definitely something that is missing in my wardrobe since I sold my Acne v-neck sweater (the color wasn’t right). Acne lightweight wool sweaters are VERY GOOD and fit me perfectly – they have just the right drape. I’d love to find something in alpaca though.
Your turn…what are you shopping for this fall? What’s on your ultimate fall wishlist? What do you really NEED?
*when you use my referral link at Garmentory and sign up for an account you’ll get a $20 credit and so will I. There are SO MANY GOOD fall things arriving now!!
ahhh! could not decide between the black cotton canvas Florence pants and the black silk crepe Florences. I chose the canvas and am waiting…. but I keep thinking about the silk. so beautiful. also was thinking of that lo and sons backpack. but thought it didn’t look quite “special” enough for the price. (and I’m not really a backpack person.) but perhaps I’ll re-evaluate. 😉
i sort of agree with you on the lo & sons backpack – i was originally thinking of a tumi backpack, but i dislike the gold hardware. i appreciate that the lo & sons backpack is made of recycled polyester, first, and second, that it has tonal hardware. it looks rather large, but that will be good for traveling. I’m definitely getting it (hopefully with some birthday money!) so I’ll report back!
i thought about the canvas florence pants, but i worry that they’ll look too stiff. i had them in silk, just the wrong size, but the silk was just SO GOOD. incredibly sturdy and so comfortable. if you could do it, i think both the cotton canvas and silk would be justified 🙂
I don’t think I *need* anything. I might get new brown leather knee high boots (current pair – sofft – is old and the leather/elastic at the top of my fat calf is coming apart – not just unsewn or I’d bring to my cobbler. Might see if my cobbler can fix anyway…) Am also looking for comfortable leopard flats. Not sure what style – smoking loafer would be my preference but I haven’t found any in a comfort brand & leopard pattern. Slip on sneaker would be my 2nd choice (I don’t like with dresses as much and I wear a ton of dresses for work). I had bought the Earth ghillies from the Nordstrom Anniv sale but they weren’t comfortable (toe box not wide enough for me) and I sent back 🙁 I had a very cute pair I bought a few years ago that just aren’t comfortable enough for me now with my foot problems. Oh, and a brown leather shoulder bag. I think leather. But I’m open. That’s not really a need, though, as I have plenty of other bags I can use for fall – I just got rid of the old & falling apart brown one at the end of last winter….
kelly, look at the umbrella collective for a leather bag – http://www.theumbrellacollective.com/shop/leather-zip-tote – i just got a black leather tote in to slowre and it’s really good, so simple, but lightweight and easy to carry, made me go and see what else they have! the price is good also 🙂
Thanks! I saw that tote at slowre, but I need another tote like I need a hole in the head 😉
haha. i hear that !
I just wrote my wish list today: Overall I want pieces with interesting shapes or patterns and that are not black. I have too many basics & too much black. So: jeans in a new (not skinny, not boyfriend) shape; a dress with an interesting pattern; sweater coat (already ordered); a top with a good shape. I already vastly overspent on new boots, which weren’t even the pair I set out to buy.
This is the first season that I’m trying to stick with a list like this. I am not strict about how much I buy — I often find things throughout the year, and if I limited myself to 5 pieces a season, I would be way too conservative and end up with expensive but boring clothes that I didn’t truly love. That said, having a focus in mind, and understanding that I want to shake things up a little means that the stuff I do buy should have a bigger impact. That’s the goal, anyway.
That Every Day bag, on the other hand….Camel, or Chocolate? Wish they had a color chart on their site!
I’m kind of meh about jumpsuits…probably because I’m so jealous that I can’t wear one! I’d have a perpetual wedgie with my long torso. Unless I had something super-oversized, which would make me look like this: https://goo.gl/images/wiAVoA 🙂
I love the idea of a silk blouse, too, but I’ve had them and never wear them. Not lifestyle friendly for me.
Ooo! I love the alpaca scarf – do you find that they don’t itch? Just an observation: Are you starting the “Museum of Backpacks”?!? 😉
I LOVE the Acne sweater, and I’m drawn to that color, too. It is a pretty great shade! I have an Acne sweater in a similar shape, but the color isn’t great on me, either (sale goggles!).
I’m in the market for a great fitting pair of olive green cargo pants. I have a pair…but the great fit eludes me.
Also, I’ve bought a lot of stuff lately. I’ve kind of gone ape-sh*t crazy! I got a Splendid “Lakewood” lace up sweater in black and I love it. I saw a beauty vlogger wearing a camo sweatshirt and ordered it. Makeup…don’t get me started! (Yes, I’m starting the “Museum of Makeup”! Lol!) Black heavier Splendid leggings to wear under my new burgundy sweater dress. Flare/wide leg jeans by Level 99. Also, new leopard loafer slip-ons. A wool hat by Brixton that I will hopefully have the guts to wear in public…or I’m going to look pretty silly at home.
Your list is fantastic and I echo your thoughts about the burgundy silk from Everlane ! I guess I don’t truly “need” anything (haven’t ended up outside of the house naked yet) but I could really use a few well-tailored staples like black skinnies, a nice slim cut wool coat in black or gray, and a pair of nice leather pumps, also in black. For a gal who lives in Florida, I own a lot of sweaters. It’s time to up my outerwear game a little.
love that…i like the chocolate (I’m assuming that’s the darker brown) better – seems like the camel skews a bit too yellow for my taste.
I just bought some! And I have the same requirement (torn Achilles’ tendon) for comfort. I got mine at DSW.com, but they’re Aerosoles and they are SUPER comfy! And cute! The quality is there. I’m not sure why they call them “studded”…there are no studs! https://www.dsw.com/en/us/product/aerosoles-betunia-studded-loafer/337008?activeColor=274
There are a couple more pairs that look good, too. (Franco Sarto)
Great bags! I just fell in love with the mini hobo…and great prices, too!
1. cropped cashmere sweater (http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/vince-crop-cashmere-sweater/4635533?origin=keywordsearch-personalizedsort&fashioncolor=WALNUT)
2. ES florence/clyde hybrid (when it launches!).
Well, I’m trying not to buy anything (until the next ES launch). Today was cool and drizzly enough for me to wear my new (to me) Frye boots. I think we’ll be very happy together! My no-buy exception would be if I finally found a new winter hat and/or scarf. I like the baby alpaca one you linked to!
what is this florence/clyde hybrid you speak of??
clearly i’m not as up to date on ES launches as everyone else is!! i can’t keep up LOL
are you referring to the knits launch? or another launch? i haven’t followed launch dates, etc. so i’m really out of the loop…
Love the slightly oversized blazer 🙂 I have one with the same cut from No.6 from years ago that I wear all the time in the winter.
This fall I’m looking for
1. another pair of high rise black jeans, maybe the RC ones finally…
2. ES clyde pants in black
-3. mid heel black suede clogs
4. rodebjer trench in navy or black
5. black lace up boots from a British brand like Tricker’s or Cheaney
6. I kind of want a pair of cowboy boots! Which I think I’ll never pull off in New York… ahh to dream.
The only things I really need are another pair of black high rise jeans and the lace up boots since I wear an iteration of those everyday.
florence pants with clyde pockets! i think they’re coming in november maybe?
NO WAY
edited to add: although…that may be too much, you know? huge pockets on wide leg pants? i wonder. will have to see…
i love the RC slim legion, but they do take a lot of wear to be comfortable, and even still, the high rise is quite a challenge LOL
i got a mid-heel pair of no6 clogs just yesterday – https://www.instagram.com/p/BY9MFhKH4re/?taken-by=grechen – not suede, but they’re great 🙂 super-clunky LOL
love your wishlist! i think depending on the cowboy boot you could pull them off in NY – maybe – this pair by vetements/lucchese definitely LOL
Ooh- thanks! I might try those – some aerosoles work for me. Haven’t had any Sarto work – I think they’re a bit narrow for me. But if they’re in store, I can try…
That is a fun list. For a few reasons, I think, I’ve been feeling more inspired about my wardrobe this fall.
I pre-orderered a dress from Taylor Stitch this summer and received it a few weeks ago and recently bought a pair of Everlane boots via eBay. Both of those purchases feel interesting and yet classic enough to get a lot of wear.
I’ve thrifted a couple of other nice things lately as well–a black cashmere turtleneck and a silk jersey wrap dress. For those of you on the fence about silk, in my experience, it can be pretty durable. A silk blouse is similar in maintenance to a nice sweater.
I do have a couple of pairs of shoes still on my wish list. I wouldn’t mind a fun pair of sneakers or a new pair of short black boots. Any boot suggestions?
I have 3 different ES orders that I’m waiting for (including a pair of the silk Florence pants in Moss, everything else is black). So I think I’m set unless something irresistible pops up LOL.
I have AllBirds and they’re pretty good shoes. They hurt a little after all day wear, but then my feet don’t hurt at all the next day. Weird, but they were really great for the Women’s March. All I really want/need is a new pair of dark wash jeans. I could probably add a million things to that but I’m trying to remind myself I don’t actually make that much money!
We carry Bare Knitwear at Seven Sisters and I can attest to it being the most beautiful and lux Alpaca knitwear!!
I really need nothing–or I need things but have been buying things I probably don’t need and have probably blown my fall budget now. 😉
I have purchased:
a gorgeous vintage malachite and silver necklace
Coclico sandals (really good!)
vintage floral velvet jacket (in rust and brown and black)
new jeans
Black Crane bud dress (which now I regret a little? ugh. you may see it at Slowre)
M. Patmos black dress, bought on discount, not sure about it, but now can’t return for refund 🙁 It fits but I am not as svelte as the model.

I tried this jumpsuit on and was shocked at how well it fit–except a little tight in the bust. I’ve had such bad luck trying on jumpsuits but this was great:

Otherwise, I need to just be happy with what I have and wait.
Gretchen, I LOVE that Rachel Comey blazer on your list. It’s perfect. The price is more than I’d want to spend right now. Do you have suggestions of a similar look at a lower price point? (And definitely get those Vans, love them. I’d suggest putting in your insert to make them more comfy.)
Misspelled your name! Sorry Grechen.
oh, thanks for the vans endorsement 🙂
right off, i’d look at reformation? but i’ll try and find some more options and do a post.
i’ll have to find an alternative now, because i was going to wait and see if the charcoal version of that blazer went on sale at shopbop – or if i could wait and get it when they do their fall F&F coupon and my size sold out. of course. ugh.
no problem, you’re allowed to misspell my name once, don’t let it happen again 🙂 just kidding…
i love malachite!
why do you regret the black crane dress?
that m. patmos dress is so cute!
and i’ve wondered for so long about that ilana kohn jumpsuit…i can never quite make up my mind what i think of it LOL – i do love that the legs are wide though. how do you think it would work for me? did you get it??
The Black Crane dress is a cocoon style–so a little tighter at the hem which is bugging me?
I did not get the jumpsuit because it was slightly tight in the bust–I think it would be worth trying if you have a chance. I was really shocked at how well it fit otherwise and how flattering it was. It would look great with those new clogs you got 😉
Thanks! Would love to see a post with more options.
I love the All Birds in the birch color. I have them I wear them everyday until…. I get in the mail the limited edition in starry blue that was in a limited e-mail campaign today. The blue and black sole will be perfect with jeans.
I just got in the mail the everlane 9 in skinny jeans: they are real jeans, much stiffer in a good way than any style I love from madewell. The fit is very flattering to me. I have the medium wash and now I have the black on my wish list. Love them, they are a big win for Everlane where I have only liked the v neck shirts and silk classic shirts.
ooooh, grechen, you are a bad influence. ? yes, I am thinking of both pants. ? I should take my birthday money (it’s coming up Monday!) and get ’em.
I like the structure of the canvas. at least how it looks anyway. and the silk are just so elegant. but would show lumps and bumps more. ?
hmmm. ?
I also ordered the canvas Clyde billow skirt. and i ordered a black silk Harlow dress. interested to see how it all shakes out.
I completely know what you mean about the hardware factor. I like minimal to none myself. (love my everlane black canvas {hmm, maybe I have a problem} dipped tote bag.) and I do like the fact that Lo uses recycled polyester. and the organizational insert seems great. I want a backpack just for traveling. big trip coming up next month. but I dunno. ? I really like the look of the knomo backpack except for the shiny gold zipper. and it’s not sustainable or anything. I must say that a tumi bag I have has lasted forever.
I know that they are re-launching the Signature Collection in November!!
